I just bought Scott Lynch's "Republic of Thieves" from the Book Depository. Am a bit confused because on Amazon it says it's nowhere near being released but the Depository says it's going to be next week. Fingers crossed!

If you somehow score this book, please let us know cause as far as I knew the Fall was the earliest date I'd heard.

small Chapters run today

Ken Scholes third "Psalms of Isaak" book, Antiphon, is out in mmpb-finally.
...

Oh is that out? Good - i have the first two in the TRP but was waiting for the series to finish.
Wait... is this actually the finale?

also, grabbed two volumes of the "darkness" series by Harry Turtledove--an alternative-world Epic story of WW2 with magic and dragons. I buy them when I see them, since they aren't in bookstores often. today picked up volumes 2 and 3.

Gah, this series pissed me off... the approach is sound, a retelling of WW2 in a fantasy world. And some of his ideas are great... his take on the Holocaust is perfectly creepy yet logical and flows directly from the magic 'rules' he establishes... But OMG the series draaaaaaAAAAAaaaaaggggssss. Some characters appear throught entire books yet somehow manage not to do anything at all. I gave up after #3.

...I'm also debating buying Neal Stephenson's "Snow Crash" but I've never read any of his work so I'm still on the fence there.

I liked it. it's post-Gibson cyberpunk with a less serious approach and entertaining.

Bit of a shopping splurge yesterday, a few authors I have read nothing of, before.

...Shadow on the Glass - Ian Irvine. Know nothing about the man and if I had seen the thread on him, I might not have bought it, but let's try.
...

Good Luck with Irvine. it can be.... trying.
...

And pls report back because it's been sitting in my TRP for years...

Seriously... so i did a quick check...

amazon.uk has it for Feb 13 2013. .ca has it for Sept 13 2012.

But here's the kicker... amazon.com has it for "Feb 2012", no specific date. Sceptical me.

The various Amazons have had dates set for Republic of Thieves for something like 5 years now, and they haven't been right yet! The latest news I know of comes Little Red Reviewer's ConFusion post, in which she says:

Red said:

Scott did a reading from Republic of Thieves. it WILL be hitting bookstore shelves this year, possibly in June.

So June sounds like an optimistic estimate.

And Ken Scholes' Psalms of Isaak is slated to be a 5-book series.

Books 4 and 5 will be Requiem and Hymn, by the way.

I liked his WW2/alien invasion 'Balance' series (the first one, not the sequel, that lost me too) and there was enough to keep me engaged hoping it would get better. It didn't.
Some of those characters were so badly written it became painful to read.

Abyss--Shadow on the Glass has some nice world-building.
but the characters are just plain terribad.

The pacing I didn't like much either.
it's kind of like Russell Kirckpatrick's stuff in that regard. Except I actually managed to finish the Irvine book.

I read the first Darkness a while back. I may grab it again when I'm home for reading week and bring it over to re-read and then read the other 2 I've got so far.
I recall not minding the first one. it's nothing spectacular, but it didn't make me turn away in disgust either.

ETA: also, Pierre Pevel's third "Cardinal's Blades" novel is out. like Scholes or Tchaikovsky, it's not an immediate buy material for me, but i'm now eagerly waiting till they release a mmpb

Well, my copy hasn't shipped from Book Depository yet, though the release date for the hardcover still says Feb 15, 2012. I guess I'll get it...eventually. Good think I'm planning a re-read of the whole Malazan series in the meantime!

since it's the first day of my school break and payday, I've perused Chapters.ca, ordering book 3+4 of the Gap cycle, as well as Harry Turtledove's fourth "Darkness: book.

In all seriousness (so to speak) you might as well just grab GHOST COUNTRY and DEEP SKY while you're at it and save yourself some anticipation-ridden waiting time.
That series is awesome. You are going to want... actually you are going NEED... to read the rest of it.

^^This. Yeah, it's not the kind of series that even really requires a break, you could run all 3 in a row.

Also, I picked up a copy of Perdido Street Station at Half Price Books today. I really want to get books off my TBR pile, but simply on the basis of how awesome Embassytown was, I kinda really want to read this one right now.

totally worth the read but note it was written way before E-town and the style, tone etc are very different.
I thought E-Town in general was a substantial change in style from his Bas-Lag books, to say nothing of the squiddy madness of KRAKEN.

Found a (totally awesome) second-hand bookstore in Manchester, and grabbed a copy of Jacqueline Carey's debut _Kushiel's Dart_. And I didn't have any cash on me, so I asked the guy to save it for me until I could return, and he said, 'Just take it now, I trust you to come back and pay.' Wow!
It is perfectly monstrous the way people go about nowadays saying things against one, behind one's back, that are absolutely and entirely true.
