The Warrior Prophet by R. Scott Bakker. Devoured The Darkness That Comes Before in 3 days and just have to read the WP.

Not as good as Erikson, but IMHO some of the best Epic Fantasy to be written in years.

Finished those ones, made another run to the library and got these:

-Gene Wolfe's entire 'New Sun' quadrology. Yep, all four books in two neat Fantasy Masterworks volumes. Lets see if he lives up to the hype.

-Lois McMaster Bujold's 'Paladin of Souls', 'Komarr' and 'Memory'. Light reading for those days when vibration theory, Keynesian economic models and statistical analysis have wrung me out.

-Carlos Ruiz Zafon's 'Shadow of the Wind'. Heard a lot of good things about this book, and I like the premise.

-Alistair Reynolds' 'Chasm City'. Found 'Revelation Space' hugely enjoyable actually, so this choice was a no-brainer when I saw it on the shelf.

Bought hese yesterday. I bought the Swedish editions, but I'll put the original titles here for your benefit (and show my skillz).

Valerio Massimo Manfredi - Aléxandros; il figlio del sogna (Italian, first part in a trilogy about Alexander the Great)
Valerio Massimo Manfredi - LeSabbieDi Ammon (The second part of said trilogy)
Homer - The Illiad
Antony Beevor - Stalingrad
Antony Beevor - Berlin; The Downfall 1945
Fjodor Dostojevskij - Prestuplenije i nakzanije (Crime and Punishment, I'm sure you've heard of it)
Fjodor Dostojevskij - Idiót (The Idiot)
Jonas Hassen Khemiri - Ett Öga Rött (The only book on the list actually written in Swedish. Translates to "An eye red")
Lian Hearn - Brilliance of the Moon

Looks like I have some reading to do.

My mind is set on Bakker but I'm still afraid that the last book will last ages. I hate waiting for the last piece.

Both the announced date (for U.S. and Canada) and the date talked about in personal communication have been pretty firm for a January release.

Are these any good? I've been interested in both.

Anyways, I bought Lyonesse by Jack Vance, Lens of the World by R.A. MacAvoy, and Windhaven by GRRM & Lisa Tuttle, all used sadly.

Fun fun fun.

GRRM is one of my favorite authors, but the writing in Windhaven seems a little weaker than his other novels. I haven't really delved into it yet though. I'm sure it's decent.

Jack Vance should pull through, according to Martin.

I've heard good things about R.A. MacAvoy, but have little experience with her books.

Irvine is...put-downable. Which is not to say that he's bad, it's just that...well, I've got Geomancer on the desk next to me and I feel little to no desire to pick it up and read it.

Just picked up Agent to the Stars by John Scalzi. Enjoyed Old Man's War a lot, so I'll start reading this one tonight.

When I was in Prague (several weeks ago) I bought MT (and was very surprised that I found it there...) and a HUGE book with 5 Philip K. Dick novels (Do Androids Dream of Electric Sheep, Martian Time Slip, Ubik, The Three Stigmata of Palmer Eldritch, A Scanner Darkly).
Not very compact or mobile but I'm still happy I bought it, though I haven't read it yet (Busy with HoC right now).

I also have few books which I bought from Amazon but didn't read yet. I look forward to reading Star Maker (by Olaf Stapledon) soon (perhaps after HoC), it should be great.

And I also have Excessions by Iain M. Banks, which I'm planning to read soon as well (I've alrady read Use of Weapons, which was awesome but very weird and not very pleasant to read)

That bad? I see him mentioned quite often here which is why I have thought about it. Mostly because the series is finished.

Seems like Bakker is the best choice then Posted Image.

I guess it counts as a "book".

Embers Falling on Dry Grass.
The ebook prologue of Jordan's Knife of Dreams.
Great read. Interesting developments and some nice clever inserts for the detail oriented worldbuilding fans.

October seems so far away. Hopefully Tor will post the first chapter in September as they did with COT.

Well I know what my read of the year is most likely going to be.

"Fraid so, the Waterstones on Deansgate is probably the best, but that's about all there is. The one in St. Anne's Square that used to be Dillon's used to be good, but not so much anymore.

That's about it, really."

Yeh, but thats about all you need, too. BTW, considering how often i am in there, i am sure i've come across a bunch of you people.

I could camp in that shop. Posted Image

Was in a shop in Cardiff yesterday, and the best shop in the world, Fopp, was selling hardbacks for £1. Picked up Stephen King's "Dreamcatcher", which I hadn't heard of before, but it looked pretty standard King fare. Hopefully quite goodPosted Image
