Didn't Sort just take that sword from someone else who stood the wall?

What do you think are the odds of there being more warlocks? In DG, when Duiker's talking about the Wickan warlocks being "rooted out", it seems that there are more than 6, which is what Coltaine had. And they were spiked on the walls of Unta. I wonder just how big those walls are?

RotCG is gonna be so important... unless they continue into other novellas, things will come to a head...

And i think i remember reading somewhere that the 3 wickan clans were a tenth of something... so there could be 27 clans left. but I'm probably just imagining it.

Finally found where we discussed this before... http://malazanworld.com/forums/showthread.php?t=9401&

Considering the way military campaigns are organised in the malazan world, I reckon this mob will fail purely because they'll rush in, not be properly led, and be unprepared.

They'll burn the Wickan grasslands and any crops they find, only to realise they don't have enough food for themselves, for example. And Wickan warriors aren't stupid, they're excellent fighters. Think of it as Grey Swords vs Tenescowri, except the Tenescowri weren't deranged starving necrophiliacs, but hungry, merely angry citizens, used to a more comfortable life, who need feeding on proper food, and there were less of them, against Grey Swords who aren't stuck inside one city, but are instead on their home turf (literally), can strike from many directions at once, and have a fairly large supply of horses and also a re-born Brukhalian (ok, so Coltaine is probably too young to do anything, but you never know) You put it like that and there would be absolutely no competition. The Grey Swords (and hence the Wickans) would win without any trouble.

Even with a spattering of veterans in the crowds, it's still a mob, and it will not be thinking like an army. We saw on the Chain of Dogs how effective horse-warriors can be against a slow-moving mass of humanity.

Sorry if that metaphor is stretched a bit far, but I feel it's a fair comparison. The only way it might succeed is if Rel sends Imperial legions to back it up, and a) that would be seen as official endorsement, and they've already established that they can't do that and :p they don't exactly have many spare at the moment.

Yeah, brood, but you're implying that in the course of the next day or two after that night in Malaz, a horde of civilians seasoned with veterans are heading out.
I could argue that this political move, to shift the blame of the empires troubles on to the Wickan people, might not be a mere diversion.

What if a couple of nobles, or some big merchant houses, Letherii-types if you will, offer their money and ressources to field an army for the empire. In exchange they get the rights to govern these new plains, monopoly on trade and in exchange the empires old soldiers that participate get first right to settle and the poor/criminals get a chance to start over.

If the political campaign really gets rolling, the wickans are up against a bit more than a rowdy group of peasants.

Laseen explicitly said that she (and the Empire) will NOT officially participate. Had I my tBH, i'd get you a quote
The Wickans are scapegoats, but they are not so b/c it's the official Empire policy. Rather, the Empire can't control it's own ppl.
To openly stand up against the Wickans, who willingly cam einto the Empire would not be good publicity.

I still want to know what happened to that regiment of Wickan lancers that was headed for Genabackis as per GotM ...

I thought it was implied that these Wickans went to 7c. It makes sense really. Dujek outlawed so the wickans go to 7c. As far as i can remember there was no mention of any Wickans in MOI. The only instance of cavalry in it is that Saltoan regiment that are supposedly quite good. And we see a nameless regiment of heavy cavalry charge some archers in that battle that WJ leaves to that crap captain. the moranth liason officer.

Not sure whether this makes sense or not been many a book since a had a good reread

I wonder how many Wickans are left all together.

Are Nil and Nether the only notable magic users they have left?

there are likely others- but it is open to question how many.

How many have arisen since the massacre at Unta? How many have been reborn (per Wickan legend / magic)? It is unknowable at this point.

I am reasonably certain that there are others, at least a few.

Well I would guess there is a decent number of women and young children still left. Where again are the Wickan's lands?

I'm guessing somewhere near that place labeled "Wickan Plains," in the northeast of the map of southern Quon Tali in Bonehunters. Could be just a coincidence, though.

A true fan would have hand-copied all the maps and tacked them to his-or-her walls.

Not that, you know, I've done anything that sad and pathetic.

Up there.... it doesn't look terribly big. Then again, it borders the sea, so maybe they could escape with ships if things go to Hood's shithole.

Quon Tali is so confusing... there's a Thade and a Thades, a Quon Tali City, the Fenn city isn't anywhere near the Fenn range, there's a New Seti but the old one is still kicking...
and who names a city "Then" anyways?!

and yet there is a secret in Quon Tali. Behold!:

Blind --> Eblind --> Ebond
Baran --> Baran
Gear --> Gearal --> Garal
Shan --> Shen --> Then
Rood --> Orid --> Borid
Doan --> Doas --> Dass
pallick --> Tellick
Ganrod ~~> P'urage

Clearly the Holy Cities of Quon Tali are named after the 8 Hounds of Shadow. Overtime the names have changed a bit, but hey, P'urage just has such a nice ring to it...

interesting. That's an excellent match on several cases, though a few are a bit of a stretch, if I turn on my suspension of disbelief circuit I can see that happening.

As for Seti and New Seti- well we DO have York and New York don't we?

lol, dunno about that...
but that city named "Voron", outside the Wickan plains + forest?
In Russian, it'd mean "raven"--the male form of "Crow"...
