The pogrom against the Wickans in BH was nasty. Wickan families were butchered in malaz City, and now there's an army assaulting their home. 10,000 strong, I believe. So, do you think they can survive the battles to come? yes they have Nil, Nether and Temul but still it doesn't look good.... :(

ya, they'll be fine.. Malazan empire doesn't have anyone capable of leading them... I mean, what? arethey gonna send Korbolo Dom to deal with them?
Plus,. you know: three clans fought with Coltaine. Who knows how many are still roaming the plains?

I still want to know what happened to that regiment of Wickan lancers that was headed for Genabackis as per GotM ...

Fair enough. But just how big are the Plains? And from all accounts, the best fighters were sent with Coltaine. Remember those Wickan reinforcements from HoC? 300 only, and they were oldies. Who knows, it might be all that's left of the Crow Clan. Maybe we'll see what's happening on the Plains in RotCG, what do you think?

Someone in TB, i don't remember who exactly, was pretty clear in their prediction that Temul would be teaching a young Coltaine reborn at some point in the future, so it would appear they'll survive.

Also, fun fact but somewhere back in one of the earlier books is a chapter-opener quote from a 13 page 'book' by Temul (presumably same guy from some point in the unknown future) regarding Malazan battle tactics.

The lancers from GotM are a fun catch - they were supposed to reinforce Onearm's host, but those plans must have been derailed when the army went outlaw. Good question what happened to any Wickan forces still in Malazan service post Dom taking over.

- Abyss, always wonder what the 'Foolish Dog' Clan did to deserve that name...

It was at the end of the Book. I believe that Shadowthrone was talking to Tayschrenn, and mentioned how sorry he felt for his poor wickens. Then Tay spoke up and said that there was nothing to worry about. Yada yada, and when Temul is old there will be a young Coltaine for him to teach.
How many fucking people do I have to hammer in order to get that across.

looking at the tBH map, the plains are rather big
As for the reinforcements--they volunteered. And it was only the Crow clan that went. Once again, I'm sure there were more then 3 clans out there (prolly more like 15-20, otherwise rallying them all and uniting them really wouldn't have been deemed such a big feat).

I have a feeling that while Coltaine Reborn will of course be a legend...Temul will also be a legend by the time Coltaine is grown.

I've got a feeling the Wickans will make it through....and if we get more books later on about this world....they will factor prominently.

Tayschrenn is probably helping them out.

Not sure what you mean there. The GotM Lancers were never identified by clan and may not have even been all of one clan, being a Malazan army unit. Foolish Dog, Weasel and Crow clans were with Coltaine in 7C on the Chain.

As of TB, Temul's force was the surviving 'children' sent with Duiker at the end of DG, the old Wickan warriors/veterans who showed up in Hoc, and the Khundryl Burned Tears also from HoC.

Note that it seemed (at least, we were never told otherwise) that no other clans showed up to reinforce Temul's cavalry.

All of which is to say no we don't know how many other clans are around, but it certainly seemed in TB that the need for Temul and co to return to the plains was dire.

- Abyss, waited pointlessly for Temul to say 'de plain, de plain!'.... obscure TV joke, sorry, sorry....

by reinforcements--I meant the Wickans that joined tavore in HoC
not to mentioned that this ahs also been discussed in the RotCG thread, but I firmly believe that there isn't much to worry about

Temul's role might be that of re-gathering the clans--all obeyed Coltaine out of awe, but with him gone, the clans might have become fractioned again... and temul, as a veteran would re-unite them...

But as long as they are united, I really don't see a lot of threats to the Wickans.

Im sure there are other clans and that the Wickans can survive(if they even have to engage an army of peasants. I seem to remember(my memory may be a bit foggy) that the army was gathering at the Wickan plains but it never said that it was an army of soldiers. Who would pay for that army? I think its just a rabble of angry citizens who will either march to far into the plains and get slaughtered or will lose interest when they realize the Wickans aren't easy meat.

Yes, essentially it was an angry mob, with a bunch of Malaz veteran soldiers in the mix, but it was not "officially" sanctioned

And, yes, I'm confident that the few veterans won't be able to turn an angry crusading mob into a fighting force capable of challenging all the Wickan clans.

The Empress is likely to get involved though, she wants the plains to replace Seven Cities as the breadbasket of the empire- she was pretty emphatic that for empire's sake they would fall.

I see a force sent under Korbolo Dom or someone else striking out for the Wickan homelands in the near future.

You are also overlooking that the aristocracy might finance a war or two. To gain favor with the empress and take the wickan lands for profits.

About the rabble army- i ddi some calculations, and it appears that there are only a few armies left free to the Empire, because:

There are at least ten armies at any one time;

7th- Dead
Pormqual's- Dead
Onearm's Host (made up of 2nd, 6th and Ninth)- disappeared
5th Army- left on genebackis, may be recalled.
14th- Off to save the world.
1st Army- Disbanded.

Tha leaves Third, Fourth, maybe others.

They could easily make more, but it doesn't look good. I also read somewhere in... BH, I think it was, that there were only "a few veteran companies" left on Quon Tali. Could be pivotal.

It seems like commonsense that KD will go out to capture the plains himself in time, but with QT rising up, he may be... ahem... distracted. not to mention the Old Guard and any plans Laseen may have cooked up to remove him.

And Nil and nether; do they actually have any powers left? Their power came from their clans, and they are gone. mind you, going home to the Plainz may help... Like a homecoming trip. :p

If I remember correctly it was mentioned at one point that Nil and Nether's powers were slumbering or dormant. So it is safe to assume they will return. I'll go leaf through the book to see if I can find exactly where I saw that.

I remember someone mentioning that there were very few mobile armies, many are likely tied down to defensive / garrison positions.

someone with better quote-fu can explain further.

From a bit of digging on Encyclopaedia Malazica, these are the active armies (mentioned in the main sequence books):

Malazan 2nd + 5th + 6th Army (what remains from the Genabackan campaign) = Onearm's Host; now led by Ganoes Paran
Malazan 3rd Army (defunct) since WJ was part of it once (Pg 4, GoTM prologue)
Malazan 7th Army - Chain of Dogs; defunct
Malazan 14th Army - The Bonehunters now led by Tavore Paran on the continent of Lether and beyond.

There is atleast one army engaged on the Stormwall, which was once led by Greymane (and may yet be)
Unknown if the Logros T'lan Imass who sacked Aren etc. were part of the Imperial nomenclature and rated a number.

Anyone remember what army Faradan Sort was from? She once stood the wall right?
