He doesn't have the military understanding to do it alone as seen in GotM.

He doesn't need it though, he just needs competent commanders.

I believe the quote about mages and leadership comes from the thoughts of Tattersail. Her point was that mages, as a rule, do not command much respect or possess a great deal of natural authority. Their personal power can intimidate, but that should not be the only reason they gain and hold power.
Just consider the example of Kellanved - was he able to create the Empire because he was a mage of Meanas/Rashan, or was it because of his other qualities?
Take Kulp as the counterexample. Like Kellanved, a mage of Meanas/Rashan. Can you imagine him building an Empire?

Whos monologue is that?
It's Adjunct Lorn's monologue from her meeting with Tayschrenn.
GotM said:
The High Mage's face was lined with a deep, disturbed frown. "Yes, Adjunct," he said quietly. "You are." He looked up. "This task the Empress has commanded of me, it weighs heavily, Adjunct. These are not my strengths. It would do well if you dismissed me."
Lorn gave that serious consideration. Mages by nature never commanded loyalty. And yet there had been one mage, long ago, who had commanded loyalty -- and that was the Emperor. She said, "High Mage, we are agreed on one thing. The old guard must disappear. All who stood with the Emperor and still cling to his memory will ever work against us, whether consciously or unconsciously. Dujek is an exception, and there is a handful of others like him. Those we must not lose. As for the others, they have to die. The risk lies in alerting them to that fact. If we're too open we may end up with an insurrection the size of which could destroy the Empire."

Kruppe for emperor imo....just pause to think about that for a second...
Kruppe would obviously never take the job however with what we've seen of his nature thusfar.

That bhok-aral transplanted old whacko? As the saying goes, Beru fend us all.
Topper was in the Imp. warren when he went missing, anyone else that's nasty go/stayed in there? It's tricky coz it's the Imperial Warren, which is empty of inhabitants. If it were Shadow Realm he could have been eaten by Apt's third grand-niece or something.

Well, you know.. there WERE a bunch of Moon's Spawns floating around.. A crucified otataral dragon or two... other than that, yep totally empty..
Ofc, I believe that Topper just went into hiding to avoid the Phantom Glove...

Damn. Forgot that. Maybe he did hide, and will be the first of Laseen's "Old Guard" to disappear mysteriously. Lol...

remember, in GotM, Topper and Paran (at least I think it was them) come across some tracks in the dust. Topper says something in the lines of they best be heading off.
Basically some things survived Kallors destruction, and those things aren't pleasant.

Hmm... perhaps those "armor-clad figures" seen on the coast of Jacuruku where iron Bars and co. were dropped off?

I believe those tracks in the dust were in fact the K'chain, if i remember the description of the tracks correctly (reptilian tracks).

Anyone else think Topper is soft? i doubt his reputation as Clawmaster is earned. Mind you, if it was KCCM that may have killed him, not a lot to be done....

I think Topper is definitely one of the best. I dont think u can get that high in the Claw without some real balls.

don't misjudge Topper's skills at assassination and espionage because of the fact that he dresses and acts rather foppishly... if Kruppe didn't teach you to ignore appearances, then Iskaral's mule should have!

I agree. Topper is definitely nasty.

Wassup, pastures. We shall be the Ozzie Pair.
Remember from DG?
When Kalam was in Malaz City on the run from the Claw, his thoughts:
Damned sloppy; Topper's letting them go soft.
He may be good himself, but I don't think he is training his Claw very well. Mind you, it was Kalam...

well, about Laseen (Surly) it's always been said she is a very strong assassin, even stronger then topper... which proves topper is really a very good assassin (else they wouldn't have compared her to him).
About letting the claw slack: that was because topper learned his claw to focus more on that magic thing they do, instead of the real human senses... and since Kalam mainly uses his senses to do his jobs, he beats them... and he beats them hard
