Ok, never got why this chick was such a massive massive b!tch to everybody, including Udinaas and the Errant
She just seemed to have it out for everybody in a seriously bad way ALL THE TIME.
I really didnt' see what everybody did to make her act so meanly to everybody, other than the TEdur of course. Why did she go all apeshit on the Errant? Udinaas? Mosag?

Feather Witch would have been a shoe-in for the CGs pose. Basically she was the stereo-typical personality that had been tortured and used and now wanted to revisit this pain upon the world. She was a slave, so she would make slaves out of her captors. She had suffered, so she would crush what ever opposition she saw fit.
Remember, in one of the last scenes with FW, the Errant revealed that she had been raped by a familymember. It was probably around then that her personality twisted.
FW always had this chip on her shoulder, even as a slave, she thought she was better than Udinass. To be honest I kind of liked her because her POVs always revealed all kinds of juicy info.

yeah, featherwitch was cool...reminded me to be glad I have a nice non-b*tchy girlfriend.
Was her personality really that basic though? I couldn't think of anything specific as to why she'd want to visit such misfortune on the Errant or why she'd hate Udinaas so ridiculously bad. Just seemed unwarranted, but then again as you suggest, maybe she's just friggin crazy.
Just a thought, for the re-readers, was there anything in MT or RG that said she was of some kind of special descent that made her able to read tiles or something? I might have just been imagining that.

She was always something of a nasty little piece of work. As a slave who wasn't indebted, she seemed to use it as an excuse to establish a pecking order and put herself above other slaves. Just not a nice person from the word go.

My impression of her was that she was born with the casting talent but the rest was selftaught.
I don't know if I would call her personality basic, but I thought it was easy to read her.
In MT you see her as a mix between the slave that feels she is better than indebted slaves and the wisewoman of the letherii slaves that leads Udinass as much as he leads her. In MT, while they were both still slaves, they seemed like a good match.
In RG when both of them are free, you see their difference. As a free man Udinass doesn't change, you could say he remains the (subservient? (not really)) slave, a man who dreams of nothing and feels no will to rise above his position. FW has learned nothing and only dreams of power and revenge. She covets what she cant have and plots against everything and everyone. She hasn't grown, rather she's regressed, into something cold and primitive.
On another note. How long did FWs trip on the boat take? I would imagine, with all the places they've been, she had been gone for more than a year, two at least. How does this fit together with the Fugitives, among them Udinass, being on the run from the Letherii and Edur? I remember it said that they had been on the road for no more than a half year.
What is your opinion on this?
EDIT: I don't remember it mentioned why there were so many slaves in the Edur camp in the first place, but it is implied that the Edur have been in skirmishes with the Letherii before MT, and the Edur have taken slaves.

Some of them were hereditary slaves, Apt.
Hello, soldiers, look at your mage, now back to me, now back at your mage, now back to me. Sadly, he isn’t me, but if he stopped being an unascended mortal and switched to Sole Spice, he could smell like he’s me. Look down, back up, where are you? You’re in a warren with the High Mage your cadre mage could smell like. What’s in your hand, back at me. I have it, it’s an acorn with two gates to that realm you love. Look again, the acorn is now otataral. Anything is possible when your mage smells like Sole Spice and not a Bole brother. I’m on a quorl.

That too, same difference.
Hmm, come to think of it, has there been any mention of Slavetraders and Edurs trading? The Letherii, or their ancestors, don't all have to be won in battle.

Agreed about the hereditary slaves thing.
wasn't there something mentioned about the title of feather-witch being an ancient title from the first empire. I think the Ceda, or someone like that, references that there hasn't been one in ages.
Apparently because for the last god knows how long they've been slaves to the Edur.

If I remember correctly, both Udinaas and FW were hereditary slaves, and they had their own social ranking system, to the extent that FW would have been married off to a "higher class" slave at some time in the future. Udinaas's indebtedness was therefore inherited rather than having been incurred by himself, but he still belonged to the indebted class.

I think that was something carried over from Lether society, the Indebtedness being hereditary too.

Can we do better than "What the crap is..."?
It's such an ugly title for a thread.

When I first looked at it I read 'what the crap' which is even worse.
I was wondering whether it is better to avoid posting something that is relevant to the thread at the beginning like 'Featherwitch's deal - What is it?' or whether it's better for 'What is Featherwitch's deal?'
In the top case, the second one is almost certainly better but sometimes it helps for identification, but there is the other side of the coin. I am conscious of spoilers for people just browsing the forum, for example if someone posted in the RG forum 'Trull's dead' then it would be viewable to all whilst it was the last posted thread in the forum.

Hahaha....how about "Why the shit is...?"
Feather Witch was a tortured soul but i found her character a very enjoyable POV. She was a scrappy underdog

hmmm.. the reason FW hatede udinaas, was b/c he decided to be all hero-;like and jumped to her rescue from the wyval. when in fact she summpned the wyval to make herself special. Hence, he usurped her supposed "role" abd she was angry.
Also, she got a lot of bad from Rhulad's wife (name?) who took out all the abuse she got from Rhulad on FW. and I think she blames the Errant, cuz he's kinda in charge of dishing out fates, be they good or bad, or at least she thinks so.

I thought she grew a little extra nasty after being abused by Mayen. She was always dismissive of Udinaas, but I don't think she took pleasure in it from the start. Feather witch in Midnight Tides was a completely different person from Feather Witch in Bonehunters and Reaper's Gale if you ask me.
The leader, his audience still,
considered their scholarly will.
He lowered his head
and with anguish he said,
"But how will we teach them to kill?"

Nether Lich? I knew it, she died and rose through her tenuous hold of Death. And she was trying to use her necromantic powers to raise Brys.
