If you haven't read book 4+, please don't read this thread. It might contain spoilers:

Before the beginning of part III of the book, also called Memories of Ice, lady Envy finds three Imass who're heading to the 2nd Gathering. These guys talk about a war with humans that has had them devastated on the far continent of Assail.

Now, this is really confusing since I thought from book 5 that the series was going to deal with the Tiste Edur from there on; when I read The Bonehunters, it corroborated my assumption. I still haven't read Reaper's Gale, but I'm pretty sure it has to do with the Edur as well because in the end everybody's heading there.

So where does the continent of Assail come into play in all this? That's my question. Who are these humans who are decimating the Imass anyways? And I reckon they'd be a greater threat than the Malazan themselves. That being said, Erikson does love to confuse people, doesn't he just? :D

It's stray plot thread, making the Malazan story seem bigger than it is.

Also Assail along with the Crimson Guard, who are or have been on the continent, is ICE's area of writting and SE has said he's left it to ICE to expand upon that storyline.

So, all in all, Assail won't come into play in Reaper's? And in the end, I guess, this continent is not that big of a deal.

Oh but the continent is a big deal, some sort of tyrants are loose on a continent and are killing T'lan Imass with ease. The continent is said to be an even worse place for ascendants than 7C.

And it's name suggests that the Forkrul Assail once held dominion there. It's a very interesting place.

And they are purportedly human tyrants too... very intriguing

hmm.. yes.. ICE's gonna write his (fourth?) book about it... after all, that's where Silverfox is right now... with all her summoner-like powers...

Lanas Tog (T'lan Imass who met Envy and the Seguleh on the icebergs on the way to Pannion) told her the baddies on Assail were humans...

Wasn't "human" the very last word of Book 3 of Memories of Ice? I don't have the book handy, but the T'lan Imass really emphasised that the threat was human.

Sorry to nitpick.

Well, Assail might be of importance then. But I guess not from Erikson's standpoint. Yet it might come into play on the three last books. Who knows? From Erikson, I expect anything and everything.

Actually, never mind anything previously said. The end of MOI depicts Silverfox and the Imass going to war against the humans on Assail. So I'm pretty sure that this continent will play a bigger role than just a name in the books to come.

As stated above, Assail is ICE territory, it will not figure in the up and coming books as more than myths and legend and backpacking stories.

So then what about Silverfox? Will that be all we see of her?

I hope so. There's something profoundly irritating about her...
Kif: Sir, remember your course correction?
Captain Zapp: No.
Kif: Well, it's proving somewhat more suicidal than we'd initially hoped.

Well, that sucks. I love the Imass and would want to see more of them in the books to come.
