I was kind of shocked when I reread this is GotM:

The hounds' eyes intesify on Paran as if sensing his (Paran's) hatred. He realizes afterwards that he is baring his teeth. (rough paraphrase)

So is this a hint that he might be a soletaken hound? I know that
Spoiler
But that compounded with ST's comment about "someone...powerful" or whatever makes me think that maybe Paran has more going on than we suspect?

I can't remember the Shadowthrone comment you refer to. What "someone" was he talking about?

Can't add anything else to the discussion in this forum, sorry.

Sorry, GotM at home. I will read it again tonight and post the actual quote.

Just re-read the scene, and I'm not seeing anything of the sort. You may be thinking of Shadowthrone's comment that he expected Lorn to send "someone ... of ability."

Quote

Both Hounds froze, heads hunching towards him, as if seeing the hatred in his eyes. Paran felt his heart go cold at their avid attention. He was slow to realize he had bared his teeth.

A stain of shadow separated th two Hounds, the stain vaguely man-shaped and translucent. The shadow spoke. "The one Lorn sent. I would have thought someone of ...ability. Though, it must be said, you died well."

"Evidently not," Paran said.

Impression 1: baring your teeth at Hounds of shadow and then having a repartee with Shadowthrone is hardly you average behaviour. Forshadowing seems appropriate and maybe more than just his obvious stuff that comes later. Thus maybe he is a nascent soletaken hound.

Impression 2: Oh, the irony. "someone of...ability." as an insult...

It sounds to me like you're taking and showing us stuff out of context. All through the book and MoI Paran just gets more and more... sour and moody, for lack of better words.

His hatred is for the game and him being a piece in it. Also what comes before this scene and the reference to hatred? Paran is most definently not hiding hidden talents, otherwise the twins, Tattersail, Hairlock, ST, etc would have picked up on it.

Can we get a page reference for this meeting? Because I'm thinking that it happened before Paran was exposed to the blood of the dead Hounds, and so it is irrelevant to his potential Soletaken Hound-ness.

It certainly was before(page 141 TOR US). That is my point. He was displaying characteristics of it ahead of time. So maybe the blood had less to do with it...

Just a quick question in regards to Ganoes encounter with the Hounds blood. Can anyone tell me where this occurs in the book as for the life of me I can't find it. I've just started Memories of Ice and Paran's frame of mind (and constant questioning) also has my head in a bit of turmoil and asking questions as well.

Thanks to anyone who can point me in the right direction :p

It's the scene where Hairlock comes out of the warrens, running from the hounds. Quick Ben cuts his strings and the puppet is torn to pieces by the shadow hounds. They then turn on Paran but at the last moment Rake appears and chops them good. That's when some of the Hounds blood hits Paran.

He bent down to touch the hound because he was feeling remorse so went to pet it in a way, then got sucked into the sword

This question actually gets answere later on in the series, but since it is the gotm forum I cannot divulge said information.

The part you're speaking about is while Paran is outside of Hood's Gate. I don't have the exact quote on hand, but he realized that he had his own teeth bared in a snarl or something.

As for Paran being a Hound - sorry, I think I will keep my comment to myself for the sake of spoilers and the fact I don't know for certain. I say, read on.

Have just started re reading the series to freshen up my knowledge in time for the new book.

The quote you use is on page 139 of the Bantam UK edition and I have to say that the sentence before this explains perfectly why Paran is baring his teeth ;

Quote

Sighing, Paran craned his head around. He saw a pair of Hounds - massive hulking creatures, dark tongues lolling as they sat watching him. These are what killed the company in Itko Kan. These are the cursed, horrifying beasts. Both Hounds froze.....(etc etc)

Don't forget Paran was the officer responsible for rummaging through the remains of the 175 members of the 19th Regiment of the Itko Kanese 8th Cavalry that the Hounds had chewed up, his comrades in arms. Combine this with the fact he knows he's part of Oponn's shenanigans, and being used. He also overheard Ammanas and Sorry/Cotillion yapping after Sorry carved him up. He knows who "killed" him.

No wonder he's pissed and baring his teeth !
Now all the friends that you knew in school they used to be so cool, now they just bore you.

Yeah, I'd say this is important as well. He gets a familiarity with and hatred for Hood, Hood's Gates, games the gods play, and who he can and cannot trust (no one, of course.)

That he just about meets his impending doom and yet another god, plus he's got Oponn's coin (which I think he did at this point) why not take a risk and see what happens. For a while he almost seems suicidal in his attempts to get rid of Oponn's Luck, the coin itself, and out of the prying eyes of the gods who are watching him because of it. He doesn't seem afraid of any of the gods or ascendants he may meet.

Paran didn't have Oponn's coin - he had the sword, Chance. Crokus had the coin.
