2 Things

Anybody remember why Shilas Ruin's swords hum? I was trying to find the part where they describe that in MT, but I gave up. I seem to remember something about tensioning cables inside the steel that make it vibrate...

Anybody think this was a terribly sissy weapon to give to somebody who wrecks as much s**t as schilas? Whatever happened to the giant black swords trailing black smoke, or soul-infused unbreakable flint swords, or earth-shattering hammers? I was hoping in MT he'd get some kind of cool matched pair of swords that he could put together and take apart to unlock different abilities...reminiscent of the final fantasy movie that came out a short while back.

I don't remember it actually being explained what's inside the sword(s), rather I thought it was a bad encantation, or was that the other one?

The weird thing in RG was that they are both described as wailing as I remember, while it was only one of them, The Glory Goat I think it was called, that made sound in MT.

I think the swords were cool enough for Ruin. The scene in start were he first kills one Edur in one swing from the scabbard, after which he drew out the other and killed the rest was pure awesome. Especially that one poor Edur that lost a piece of his scalp and just wanders aimlessly around holding the a piece of his head. That's the type of characters that normally return in SE's writting, like Broke Face :D

Or maybe 8 swords that come together and form a Voltron-like uber sword!!

Just kidding...

I thought the singing swords were kind of cool. He probably didn't want to copy Rake and have a giant 'Dragnipur' type because then he'd be seen as a wanna-be.

This could start an entirely new discussion, however. The coolest weapon in the series (may be a discussion already, I'm a newb). I'd say Redmask's whip.

I'll probabaly think of something better later and curse myself for not remembering, but of the top of my head, the coolest weapons in MBotF has to be Dragnipur or Brood's hammer...

There's just too much awesome in them.

lol...voltron sword. And then the 8-part sword is powered by a bunch of powerful balls...we could call them "dragon balls". Or maybe they're just powered by his own 2 dragon balls. Okokok, I'll stop with the dorky anime references.

the singing swords just seem too.....wimpy. I do agree with the not-copying-rake point though. I just compare ziiiing (slop, thud) ziiiiing (slop, thud) -- the sound of schilas slicing off limbs to BEUAAARRGH!! CHOP (slop, splatter, thud, thud) WITNESSSS!!!! -- the sound of karsa cutting someone in 2 vertically. I can't help but feel that schilas drew the short straw in the cool-weapon lottery.

I don't think the sound the swords make is ziiing, it's called glory goat, it's probably more of a moan or braying. Like really loud and unnerving.

Like a deep scream.

Lol, good oral imagery. Yea, I guess S.E. had a say in what Ruin ended up with, but Ruin didn't. He just kind of said "go get me something" and when he saw what he got he figured he'd make due. Maybe he knew he was such a bad ass that it didn't really matter what he got. I think Kettle could have come back with a fire poker and he'd have done just fine.

oooh, and btw my fave weapon formwise is definitely Karsa's sword. It reminds me so much of Gatz's sword in the Beserk series (another anime ref.). Fave function-wise is dragnipur (how could it be anything else)...its just so nasty in every way, and fits the user so well.

haha...I'll modify the oral imagery then

baaaaaaa (slop), baaaaa(slop) chomp chomp -- sound of a glory goat hacking off limbs, then eating some grass.

My favorite is the sticky, honey buns or whatever Kruppe uses to stop Brood's hammer. Those have got to have some steroid yeast in them, or maybe they're made with shadow mule milk...

I think Fiddler's crossbows are good weapons. The best swords are the arms of the K'ell Hunters.

Looking forward to the reappearance of Broke Brain, the friendly Edur who's not all there!

Moranth Munitions! In a medieval setting those weapons take the prize.

Now really... what about Toc's Stone Arrows? killed 3 (or was it 2) Letherii mages with just one arrow.. or Gruntle's "Tiger claws" from the battle of Capustan?

yep...pretty good call there, but think about using such weapons. Compare having your arrow explode peoples' heads to your sword chaining souls of mofos you kill for eternity pulling a wagon (alongside dragons and gods you also killed) away from a wave of chaos inside the alternate dimension and warren that is your sword.

Or compare it to wielding a stone sword you chipped out at impossible angles and impossible size with sheer blind will...then used to hack apart 2 of your own gods.

For me, the arrows and other smaller weapons are good, but no match for the uber swords

the giant cusser crossbow is pretty wicked too

Those are all great weapons... but come one now, what about Rhulads sword.... It makes you immortal...who cares about the sanity part... your unkillable(almost). And you get stronger with every death. I think someone with better mental health would have handled the power just fine... Rhulad was a wuss.

Im quite fond of the singing swords imagery (okay I imagine a keening hum not a braying goat)

I know the one sword was enchanted to hum, I imagine the other just sort of whistles as Silchas slices the air.

The hum was described, iirc, as a flaw in Letherii blue steel that made blades do that when touched to each other.

I liked the way Seren complained that the blades continued singing for days after Silch used them.

Not every sword has to be some massive two-handed inter dimensional flame spouting ICBM of a weapon. I like the fact that Silch used two smaller weapons, as opposed to Rake, karsa etc. Hell, the Seguleh use the two sword mojo style in MoI and no one called them wimps.
