OK, I just got to the point where the 5th (Gesler, Stormy & their posse) meet the 4th (Strings & his posse). It appeared, based on the private discussion after the meeting, that Gesler and Stormy know String's true identity. I don't recall when they met in the previous books. Is this the first time we've learned this, or am I forgetting a period where these two groups were intermingling?

No you not forgetting anything Mott. In the books this is the first meeting. However we know from the earlier books that Fiddler has been around for a while. We also know that Gesler and Stormy were fairly important back under the Emperor. So it is easy to see how all three could have heard of each other and even had dealings with each other in the past.
How many fucking people do I have to hammer in order to get that across.

As Vengance says, the three were all important figures in the Kellanved-era Empire. It's quite likely they had met in that period.
Fiddler is something of a legend anyway. Any veteran of the Malazan military would know of him, and likely be able to figure out Strings' true identity.

Gotcha. Thanks, as usual, for the clarifications. I am impressed daily by the caliber of knowledge, depth of friendliness, and alacrity of response on this site.
I have a feeling that the books are going to make much more sense to me with you guys to bounce questions off of. I just bought last months comics yesterday, and I have no desire to touch them. Every free moment is spent with HoC in hands!
