Okay just finished all the malazan books so far up to reapers gale, read the sword of truth series. Read both books in Instrumentalities of the Night saga, (which is amazing and my #1 choice of books this year!) I read the prince of nothing saga, loved it.

So what i like, hummm i love epic novels, or one where the main charecter is alot more then human or an exceptional person. 2 good examples are the main charecter in the Instrumentalities of the Night, where the main guy is pretty much in charge of the largest army and is feared for it. While in the prince of nothing, it is a man trained from birth to overcome emotion and to read people like a book, while at the same time trained in all forms of combat and can take on a small army himself.

I want something thats not the elf the warrior the paladin bla bkla. I want 1 main charecter who's godlike in someway or a book about massive wars or battles. Like tyranny of the night! Anyways thanks alot guys!!!

oh and can anyone tell me when the 3rd book in the Instrumentalities of the Night comes out? i cant find it anywhere.

You might like Harry Turtledove's 4 book series called The Videssos Cycle. Book 1 is called The Misplaced Legion.
Or Roger Zelany's Nine Princes of Amber.
"Yes, the owl was deliberate in each and every instance, and yes, it was intended to work on multiple levels." (from SE's Dec 09 Q&A)

Have you read Greg Keyes' The Briar King (Kingdoms of Thorn and Bone) series. Not precisely as what you've described but it's enjoyable.

How about Stranger in a Strange Land?

If you want a strong central character, you can't beat The Stars My Destination.

Joe Abercrombie's The Blade Itself, followed by Before They Are Hanged. The next book in the series is due out in the spring, I believe.

The Name of the Wind by Patrick Rothfuss fits in a way.. Kvothe is definitely the type of character you are looking for, but as this is the first book, you spend a lot of establishing the character through the learning phase of his life, but it is told as an autobiography(of sorts) and gives you tidbits to his badassness that hopefully will be explored more in future books.

In a lesser class though still mostly entertaining, The Riftwar books starting with Magician: Apprentice are pretty good. These books have a single strong central character and some auxiliary characters. There are good battle scenes in all of these books. Author is Raymond Feist

other notables I would mention are:
Ender's Game by Orson Scott Card(scifi, smart kid(and family) that blows away everyone else)
The Black Company series by Glen Cook(should help sate your lust for battles, same author as the Instrumentalities of the Night series)
Wheel of Time by Robert Jordan(but the main character doesnt like his power and the story drags over 1000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000 pages)

I second Rothfuss. You won't be disappointed.

And, humbly, I suggest my own books. But, then, I tend to do that.... (The Mistborn books look like a good match for what you like.)

Thanks! I don't post a lot; mostly just lurk when I have a few spare moments. My stuff is tough to find in the UK, unfortunately--the books are only released through the UK SF book club over there. In the States, I'm far more easy to find.

Free book can be found here:

(Warning--that one is still in draft stages.)

Ever read A Song of Ice and Fire by George R.R. Martin? Pretty good series, it's done by point of view from many characters. Some pretty good battles in it, not many if i remember correctly. But I find its pretty epic,
Remember, God lets good looking people into Heaven. That said, you're one ugly Bastard.

Sounds Like a description of 'The Chronicals of Thomas Covenent' by Stephen Donaldson to me. I can also recomend The Assasins trilogy by Robin Hobb to be in a similar vein. If you want something a bit different try Altered Carbon by Richard Morgan, its SF noir rather than epic fantasy but the main character sticks out alot.

The website ( http://www.gregkeyes.com/ ) says "late 2007 or early 2008."

Unconfirmed info
March 25, 2008 is the date for the US publication.

July 4, 2008 is supposedly the date for the UK publication.

Will second that recommendation. Loved Elantris also. The second book of the Mistborn, The Well of Ascension, is on its way to me now.

Read Dune?

The climatic battle of Dune features thousands of nomadic desert tribesmen riding mile-long worms against thousands of laser-equipped technosoldiers. The tribesmen are led by a messianic prophet who can see bits of the future, kill pretty much any number of opponents in combat. Oh yah, and he wants to destroy intergalactic trade, take revenge for crimes committed against his family and rule the known universe.
I survived the Permian and all I got was this t-shirt.

I've gotta agree with Brandon Sanderson, of his books I've only read Elantris, but it ROCKED!!!

Oh, and try The Coldfire Trilogy by C.S. Friedman. It's kinda what you said you wanted. At the very least it does have a godlike main character.

Agree on Sanderson and I've read Elantris, Mistborn and am more than halfway through The Well of Ascension. Good books!

I'm glad to see another fan of the Coldfire trilogy. The only thing wrong with the main character is that he is a bit of a sadist.
