Might just be my memory playing games with me, but I could have sworn there was a scene in Gardens of the Moon pertinent to the subject at hand. It involved Whiskeyjack musing on his squad and the fact that he hadn't seen some members of his squad engage in hand-to-hand combat for some time. Don't have GotM with me at the moment, so I can't scrounge and confirm/deny it though.

Yeah, it does. I'm sure he even mentions how useless Fid's sword is and later tells him to put it away for fear of doing himself an injury.

Wow, I just took a look at this thread and a few people mentioned that that thing Karsa fought in the deserted castle was a Short Tail K'Chan. I totally did not get his as I read, just thought it was your everyday random demon.

I need to re-read Bonehunters, but overall (and having just done Deadhouse Gates again), Kalam's crawl through Malaz City on the way to kill the Empress, while being hunted by Claw patrols, was pretty damn spectacular.

_____________

Edit to add: the fight against the soletaken Dhenrabi (?) at the start was mighty fine too.

It's mentioned somewhere as a running joke that he usually loses it.

While Silanah and the Draconean Andii v Raest remain one of my faves in the series, Trull v Icarium in Bh is definitely on the list. Quoting myself from elsewhere...
Trull has had the worse day ever, been stabbed, slashed, exhausted, watched Ahn die, had to kill his own Edur people, he's been protecting a bunch of kids he cares about who are getting slaughtered anyways, and then Icarium shows up, his friend Onrack is apparently shattered, Apt's beheaded, Ibra quartered, Monok melted, and then Iccy reduces just the whole Edur/Leth army to cole slaw for good measure, and Trull steps up and fights him, and it's like 'Fine, you've killed two almost immortal undead warriors, a soletaken bonecaster (also near immortal undead), a demon matron and most of an army... Fine, you're unstoppable, i'm tired and wounded and my life sucks. Fine. Screw it. You are STILL getting a spear through the chest before i let you at these kids.'. And he actually holds for a bit. And then he loses, QB shows up, gets whupped, and here comes Iccy again, and Trull grabs a spear and steps up AGAIN and there's a great bit where he suspects the insane Icarium recognizes him and Trull thinks 'That's right, it's me again'. He's absolutely sure he's going to die, but he is NOT letting Iccy get the kids without a fight. It's such a perfect 'hero' moment...

over all i reckon Karsa taking out the derogoth hounds in HoC was most cool, and he munts the short tail in BH, his scenes are written rather well, and its the reason he is my absolute fave character in the whole series.

but I also like Pust vs the 7 D'ivers demon thing, it was sort of nice to know that when he has too he could hold his own.

My overall favourite is when Icarium goes psycho in BH. It shows just how dangerous he can be. It also shows just how ridiculously skilled Trull is.

Also, anytime Karsa draws his sword or Quick Ben starts getting scary with the magic is pretty good.
Flying Monkeys definitely win.

i love kalams rolling of the shoulders, an i think we know that the lizard is a short tail cuz of the robo bugs in his belly.
not nescesarily a good fight but when Tavore killed Felisin/Sha'ik... wow gut wrencher
and the thing with the marines in RG is they got a good mix of everything, fids a good leader and probably dec with a sword, but his thing is munitions and crossbow. at certain points they even go over how each of them complements each other in fights. that was one of my favourite parts

i just finished reading parts from beowulf in my L.A. class and noticed something. Karsa Orlong = Beowulf+. His fight scene with the short tail reminds me of Beowulf v Grendell. anyone else notice this?

my fav scenes: anytime Kalam vs. entire claw, the one with cotillion killing the edur, quick/trull vs icarium, Karsa versus anyone that gets in his way, quick ben versus Bauchelain and Korbal Broach, anytime a sapper pulls out a munition, any time fid pulls out his crossbow, anytime paran scribes stuff on a card, and anytime quick does crazy stuff

Gruntle during the siege in MOI, Ironbars all fights, Byrs vs. the Edur emperor, and Tool vs. Mok. Oh and Paran taking on the chaos condor.

Brys against Rhulad. I loved that fight. So gut-wrenching at the end.
Icarium against Trull. Another really well-written scene. Shows what Iccy can do when he gets angry.
Not exactly a fight, but I loved it when Quick raised his illusion to scare off the Edur fleet. Really made me wonder what the hell was going to happen next.

technically it only started as an illusion, and then bottle and the eres'al made it real.

Not a fightscene but when Blood eye knives Silchas, has to be one of the finer written scenes.

Funny somewhat only semi-substantiated observation re this - the rolling shoulders thing appears throughout DG and HoC when Kalam is flying solo. He typically does it just before something truly fncked happens or when he is nervous about something.

In TB, Quick Ben sees the rolling shoulders thing and comments to Kalam 'You must be nervous - I haven't seen that shoulder roll in years.' - but he's been doing it all the time, just not when QB is around.

Translation - very subtle/clever way of SE showing that Kalam is infinitely more confident when he's got QB as back-up.

- Abyss, gives SE props even when it may just be in my own head.

Just started Bone Hunters, so I stopped reading this thread quickly...but I had to reply:

1. Tool crashing through the wall chasing after the K'Chain Che' Malle in MoI when the BB are like...whoa follow that!

2. The 3 Segulah rushing to meet the Pannion Domin's cannibal army when they notice Envy and crew.

3. Rallick Nom's assassination duel at the party in GotM during the duel was so awesome.

4. Karsa, Quick Ben, Kalam.....all fights are great!

5. I know it really isnt a fight so to speak but when Bugg/Mael saves Tehol was damn cool too.

many others, but those stand out the most

Quick Ben versus the Pannion army before the BBs get airlifted into Coral is one of my favorites. Shows how even though Quick isnt a battle mage like Tay, he uses illusion and his use of many different warrens to wreak havoc.

Then again Tay stepping up later that same fight after getting stunned by Kallor and knocking down 12 mages in one fire wave is amazing too.

Definately Kalam, Tavore, and T'amber's battle through Malaz City and the final battle between QB and Icarium. As for the entire series, Karsa's battle with the Hounds in Raraku and Brys Beddict's duel with Rhulad were epic. Also, I really liked the confrontation between the Ceda and Hanan Mosag in MT.

Best crack-up combat scene in BH?
Has to be Crump setting his cusser-cluster to blow the shit out of Y'ghatan's walls.
Just the image of him running away with his feet up round his big ears always brings a grin to my face.
