Gothos...

I don't think Gothos is allowed to leave the Azath. He may have entered voluntarily, but it is still imprisonment.

I agree with DM.
Gothos is not allowed to leave the Azath Houses, however perhaps, in return for his stewardship, they have granted him longevity, ability to see anything they can, and protection.
I thought 'Gothos Folly' was an ironic name for a treatise written by the said Gothos.
Also, the nameless ones supposidly serve/protect the Azath. Iccy is the only one to ever assault an azath and live, of course they are going to be obsessed with him.
As an aside, I do like the idea of Gothos writing his treatise using an 'azath of time' and viewing all the 'events' of the history of WU. Perhaps that was his price for going into the Azath? perhaps he has a room in an azath somewhere filled with the rest of his 'treatise' but cannot get it out to anyone? Irony...

On another note, I had thought the "Folly" was writing a history that would influence nothing.

To me, Gothos has an agreement with the Azath, it kept him safe and in return Gothos was it's guardian, but it wasn't imprisonment like Raest is imprisoned. Raest is an unwilling guardian, which makes him different than Gothos. I believe that Gothos is probably still working with the Azath, whether he is in one or not. Also it's easier for the Azath to have an ally that knows what the Azath want, Unlike the Nameless One's who I think don't relly do or even know the Azath's wishes.
Also, since Icarium attacked that Azath house when he heard that his father had entered it, it is obvious that Icarium had already been born at that time, and had been around for a long time, especially if he had the power to wound an Azath House.
I also believe it is fairly ridiculous to think that Gothos entered an Azath House just to write a book. Gothos is like Shadowthrone, we're not supposed to know their plans.

This wouldn't make sense - Kellanved and Dancer entered voluntarily, but weren't imprisoned. And Gothos says that he has no wish to leave, which implies he has the ability.
And I wonder if Gothos originally dwelt in the Jhag Odan House, which Icarium killed, and had to shuffle off through some portal to Tremorlor to escape being "freed." Or maybe Icarium just attacked the first Azath House he came to, and was too mentally damaged in the aftermath to seek out the correct one.

So obviously they are in this together

Thanks for all the constructive critiquing of my theory. I've thought about the Gothos/NO connection as well, but can't make up my mind over whether or not I think he is behind them too. For some reason I'm inclined to think no.

Alternatively, that implies that he doesn't mind being imprisoned.

If he knew the Houses are all linked, maybe he figured any House he found was as good a place as any to hulk out.
Then again, iirc, at some point Icarium was in the Odhan and sought information or punishment from other Jhag, or Jaghut. Maybe that's what he got, in the form of being told to go attack the Azath.
Gothos is pretty clear that he didn't want Iccy to come and 'save' him, but we're assuming that was indeed Iccy's intent. Maybe he was actually trying to prompt the Azath into taking him, and underestimated himself.
It's all speculation, of course, but i wouldn't assume anyone, including Gothos, has the whole story.
- Abyss, also wonders if maybe Iccy was just feeling cranky that day...
