ITs happened and it was over fairly quickly, except for the long drawn out whooping that Penn ate for 3 of the four rounds...I support GSP, but after listening to all the hype I began to believe that Penn was a contender...Balls! GSP is immensely strong, while Penn looks like a fat kid.

Machidas' fight was...interesting, but is he top tier? I dunno, I reckon he'd take Jackson and the iceman, but Rashad speed and power...That would be a good match up.

I wasn't too bothered about the other fights...

Most of the fights tonight went to a decision. Machida/Silva and Penn/Pierre were the only televised ones that didn't.

Machida is most definitely top tier. I think he'd beat Rashad and hold the title for a few fights.

Kim was robbed, plain and simple.

That kid is 30 years old. He's beaten everyone put in front of him (6-0 in the UFC right now). I'd say that's worthy of a title shot, especially since Rampage does not have a comparable streak and is already fighting Jardine.

Machida completely won me over with this fight. I've drank the kool-aid and am on the bandwagon. If he can continue to fight that way when he's up against the elite of the weightclass, he'll do big things.

GSP looked like a beast from the outset. Penn looked like lazy surfer dude again. I know its hard to put on that much weight, especially when you're a little guy,
but seriously, I think Penn needs to consider moving to a camp on the mainland where he can get pushed by other fighters who are at a high level in training.

He just didn't seem that fit, despite the comments about how he's been working his cardio.

Now, i've heard about the vaseline thing, and I guess we'll have to see how that goes, but I did mention to the guy i was watching the fight with that Penn's leg
seemed to keep sliding off of GSP's back a lot more easily than I was expecting.
Would that have been a fight changer? Maybe, but considering GSP's overall dominance, I still think he would have won the fight.

Dong won that fight in my mind. First round was completely his, second round Karo's, but third round i had given it to Dong, as he was still trying
harder than Karo (in my opinion)

Jones / Bonnar was ridiculous. Jones was throwing him around like it was a WWE match. Seriously, i couldn't believe some of that stuff.

Guida / Diaz - meh, not a bad fight, but not a great one.

oh, and how long now till the same fans who were predicting Thiago Silva to tear Machida apart
start commenting that "Silva isn't that great a fighter anyway". Sigh - depressingly predictable,
but there we are.

They need to give Machida a match with one of the top level contenders, if not an outright title shot now, surely?
Sorry to keep returning to this point, I just really enjoy watching Machida fight.

I agree that Penn should go elsewhere to train next time. But where? Jackson's has been on a real tear lately, ATT is doing very well, the Nogueira/Silva academy in Miami (formerly Black House) looks good, Xtreme Couture has fallen somewhat, but is still good.

I don't think the Vaseline was a big deal. BJ seemed to drop the legs because he didn't have enough strength to pull in and turn the wider and stronger GSP while keeping the punches at a distance. If you watch the gifs or clips, you can see the back rub and it's not like the dude glopped some on his hand and blatantly tried to cheat. He rubbed the face and then did that weird energy thing.

GSP should have stuck to the double nipple twist and we wouldn't have any problems with Vaseline.

As for Machida...I've just not seen enough of him to make a call, but he looks okay so far.

as to where, i'd say its irrelevant.

I think the problem is that Penn is too complacent in the camp that he's in, and he needs to be taken out of his comfort zone and made to work.

Where he is right now he is, without doubt, the alpha dog, and I doubt there's anyone there to run the rule over him when he feels like a day off.

So I think a change in camp and training partners could be the best thing for him.

I don't actually think he will ever beat GSP, have you seen the size of the guys thighs? Jesus wept, they are like ridiculously muscled and he is a freak and a really tough one at that. Penn can train forever, but he is no way going to beat GSP unless his girfriend leaves him for his sister and his mum and dad die and their gambling addiction now means that he has to pay off their debts to a gun running loan shark who spit-roasts his poodle on his front lawn a couple of nights before the operation to amputate one of his legs. That is all

GSP did it first. Then Evans and Jardine - who also train at Jackson's - started doing it too. I didn't see him do it last time out, so it may have just been a passing fad.

Demian Maia is insanely good at grappling. His stand-up is passable, but I'd like to see him work it some more - get real comfortable - before taking on Anderson Silva.

So UFC 96 and DREAM 7 took place last night. The UFC, despite a non-lackluster card on paper, was incredibly entertaining. I saw pretty much every fight except the Maynard and Vera ones, as there were loooots of KOs. I still think Gonzaga beats Carwin 7 out of 10, but hey, we might see Lesnar-Carwin soon. Hamill did a good job, but Munoz, the guy he was fighting, was terrible on his feet - like not-belonging-in-the-UFC terrible. Munoz supposedly has a very bright future, so hopefully he'll improve rapidly.

DREAM was a little more sedate, but still entertaining. The guy fighting Aoki made one of the all-time dumbest moves in MMA history, when he decided to wave to the crowd WITH SHINYA GOTDANG AOKI ON HIS BACK WORKING FOR THE CHOKE. Beebe was unlucky to have such a big cut; I think he could have finished Warren if the fight had continued a bit longer.
