Who is the guy on the softcover edition, by the way? The one all by himself, wielding two short swords. Reminds me on Khalam...but I don't think it's him. Any enlightment?

I definately thought it was Kalam chap. The description is very close
"I think i was a bad person before. Before this time. I do not try to be good now but i am not bad. Perhaps if i try harder i may get a better hand dealt next time? But surely that makes it pointless? Perhaps i am good. Just good at being pointless. But that would make me bad. Bad at having a point. Ah…. I see now. I was nothing before, I am nothing now. I am bad purely because im pointless. "

Prolly Kalam... although, poltentially, if it's a she, could be Apsalar... Doubt it's Pearl, cuz he's not important enough, and that can't think of any other Assasins...

It's almost definitely Kalam being stalked by three (?) Claw on the night where Kalam took on the entire Claw.
There is no struggle too vast, no odds too overwhelming, for even should we fail - should we fall - we will know that we have lived. ~ Anomander Rake
My sig comes from a game in which I didn't heed Blend's advice. So maybe this time I should. ~ Khellendros
I'm just going to have to come to terms with the fact that self-vote suiciding will forever be referred to as "pulling a JPK" now, aren't I? ~ JPK

It's a large burly black man fighting Claws in the streets of a city. With a short sword in each hand. It's Kalam.

Guys, guys. You need to read carefully. You're refering to the hardcover edition. I said SOFTCOVER.

I have a soft cover with Kalam on the front. Not sure which one you are talking about.

I was talking about this one, which is my paperback cover.
You've got the new (inferior) design, with what appears to be Apsalar on the front (though it is more likely to be "generic fantasy figure," to match the "this is a generic fantasy book" theme that the publishers are pushing for some reason).

No, it's not Apsalar. If you look closer, you can see the features of a man.
And I still don't get it. In NONE of the covers, either UK or US, the actual Bonehunters are depicted. I think that is just lame.

All right, not so sure why you think it's a male, but in any case there's no strong reason to think it's Apsalar.
It's just "hooded person with two swords." It actually looks a lot like the Claw on my cover, attacking Kalam, but "a random Claw" is a strange choice to put on the cover of the book.

Apsalar is apparently stacked (see Mogora's comments in HoC), and that assassin is anything but. Other than that, it seems pretty sexless.

Well, I'm sure it's a man because I have the book in front of me; thus I can look at it with greater detail.
As to the cover choice...what can I say, this publishers have no real empathy for Steven Erikson's work.

When I got the book, I was certain it was Aspalar. And I still am, i think the figure is more feminim than the 'giant' like Kalam is described. Furthermore Aspalar plays a more important role in the book than Kalam...

Well both my hardcover and TPB show the same picture a big dark-skinned guy wielding either two short swords or long knives (allowing for artistic cock-ups here), who looks stocky and certainly doesn't fit the picture we have of a lithe, slim Apsalar with long dark hair who certainly doesn't have skin that dark

Kalam is never described as a giant - he is burly, wide and not hugely tall.

So you're suggesting that the Kalam on your books makes it more likely that it's Kalam on the other version? My version (Canadian PB, at least) has the sexless assassin on the front, and no other figures.
It's not big and burly like Kalam, and it's not all that feminine, like Apsalar.
I guess it could be Random Claw Redshirt, or Pearl, or someone else entirely.

I agree with you. I think is just Hood deamned Claw. Yet...the gleam of those two short swords...compells me to think that they are Otaral-made. And since is Kallam the only assassin who has them...So there is a possibility that is it, in fact, him.

Except Kalam only has one Ottataral sword  And ottataral weapons are supposed to be a "rusty" colour, not shining blueish silvery.

Uhh...Just a hunch... could it but Cutter? Cause doesn't he have two long knives?
