Hi all,
First post here, and I hope I'm not asking a question that answered elsewhere. I'm a few chapters into MoI now and am still loving the series. I'm used to the fact that so many things are unclear initially and then slowly sink in as I get more information. It's actually kind of fun to try to try to work different plots and world components out in my head and see how close to the mark I am later.
Anyway, there's one thing about the end of DHG that I think should be clear, but isn't for me. It just doesn't seem like an "it'll become clear in book X" sort of thing...
When Kalam finally confronts Laseen, It seems from Kalam's point of view that Laseen's passion in talking about the empire convinces him not to attempt to kill her. But later when it's revealed that the Empress was never in that room in the flesh at all, she tells Topper that at some point Kalam realized she wasn't there. IS this true? Did Kalam just walk away because he knew she wasn't really there, or did Laseen really convince him of her competence?
I know in the long it doesn't make much difference (or does it???) but it just seemed like I missed something. Is it just a case of Laseen assuming something that wasn't true?

I think at that particular time she convinced him otherwise. He was just resigned to the fact that it wouldn't of mattered anyhow at that point because she wasn't even there.
He could of gone on from there elsewhere to hunt her down if she hadn't.
Oh and Welcome, watch out though. There's a hungry Cat about

"I think i was a bad person before. Before this time. I do not try to be good now but i am not bad. Perhaps if i try harder i may get a better hand dealt next time? But surely that makes it pointless? Perhaps i am good. Just good at being pointless. But that would make me bad. Bad at having a point. Ah…. I see now. I was nothing before, I am nothing now. I am bad purely because im pointless. "
