From what we've seen in MoI the Grey Swords didn't have any offensive or defensive magical capabilities. They'd be mauled facing Quick Ben alone.

Thats question... Grey Helms Destra Irant was pretty capable magician. GS´s Destriant was ovewhlemed by healing of others, maybe if he had time to draw power...but he wasnt able no more I realize, Fener was hooked already.

But Mott Irregulars, oh my! Anti-magic Bole to every platoon! Worst psychos ever. Even malazan sappeurs got sick from Mott sappeur (oh yeah, Crump...:))) Buy one Mott Irregular pack and we´ll give you one Marshall for free!

How many first swords are we talking here? Are we talking like First Swords all alone, or like every First sword ever becoming one unit and running into combat? If that was the case, they would be a very terrifying group. My votes on the Crimson Guard though, Nobody makes people piss themselves more then Captain Blues.

I have to go with the Grey Swords, pre-Capustan. For pure fighting ability, sans moranth munitions and sorcery, these guys were the shit. Although you couldn't go wrong with any of the units mentioned above, minus the Segulah, as mentioned they are a society, not a unit. I would also throw in Trake's Legion. For a motely collection of nobodies pulled together by a caravan guard...not bad.

As for the Moranth, well, they would be a good jockstrap for any of the units above...meaning they are just support. Sorry...a little marine humor their.Posted Image

I gotta go with the Bridgeburners on this one. I've always thought of the Bridgeburners as John McClane from Die Hard. Seems like no matter how outmatched they are and no matter how bloody they come out of it in the end, they'll still get the job done in the end with sheer will, stubbornness and a whole lot of badassery. I loved the tale of the 70 initial Bridgeburners storming an impregnable fortress and conquering it in like 4 days or something. Not to mention the Sappers can answer pretty much anything any of the other armies will have to throw at them, they seem to be the backbone of the Malazan military after all.

I was thinking, you could have also included "The Old Guard" which while being a relatively small group, is an awesome collection of individuals. Kellenvad, Dancer, Dassem, Surly, Urko and Cartherton Crust and Nok (can't remember if Toc the Elder was part of their group too, and there was another woman?).
Now we get to see them all much later and know them as leaders, but all with the exception of Nok have shown us their serious martial prowess, and they're not light on the magic side of things either.

Not exactly sure if they'd count as a military company though, although they did basically form the great Malazan Army.
Just a thought.

From the list, I'd probably have to go with the Crimson Guard.

As a commander I would want a unit that could be self-sufficient, proficient in not only normal warfare but also delaying tactics, ambushes, sapping, assassination and being elusive to the enemy.

I want the Mott Irregulars!

Remember they near as damn-it destroyed the Bridgeburners and the fact is that if faced with a superior enemy (such as the Crimson Guard…in a strait up fight) they’d avoid direct engagement, harass, flank, take small bites and generally wear them down for the killer blow.

At about 300pgs into House of Chains, I would have to pick Coltaine's Chain of Dogs (minus the civilians of course). They may not have the best fighters or mages, but you know that when it hits the fan, they've got your back. They're relentless, able to overcome adversity and will fight to the last man, even when hopelessly outnumbered. I'm pretty sure they'll always be my first choice, regardless of whatever other forces I have yet to discover.

Mott Irregulars! They are insane pure and simple. Once they get bored they start dancing around fires, and once that happens you know things have got bad because now they are gonna start formin' war parties and go around looking for something to kill.

Gotta love the Mott Irregulars.

As far as mortals go, ya, the mott irregulars are definitely pretty powerful. However, it isn't quite correct to say that they alone took on the bridgeburners, as the bridgeburners ended up being mired in a battle against not only the mott irregulars, but the crimson guard and tiste andii as well. Of course...

mott had home turf, fair play it was said they kicked some ass but they were in their comfort zone, an area that they grew up in, where as the bridgeburners had to adapt, they were in a totally new environment...

plus you cant forget the assistance mott had...

bridgeburners win anyday!

has to be the seguleh.

they call three men an army. imagine facing a full 1000?

the first alone might be able to stand up to any military force one could muster.
and lets not forget REll the seguleh REJECT. the seguleh reject that kicked Rylls ass.
I'm sorry but I can't even put dassems sword above the seguleh in terms of
toughness and those guys were the toughest elite the malaz empire could offer.

I voted Bridgeburners, their reputation seems earned all the way. Although it were an option I'd have voted Onearm's host prior to Pale, since that includes most of the BBs, plus they have Moranth support, etc.
