I still think the Grey Swords where better pre-capustan, I would have been intresesting to have seen them before the fall of Fener too, but they where still without a doubt a solid fighting unit afterwards.

Just mild RG spoilers as someone already complained about talk of Karsa earlier on, (just speculation of Grey Swords if your worried)

assuming equal numbers, on a flat plain, with all forces fully equipped (meaning munitions)...it's still tough.

I think it's between three of these:

Crimson Guard: near-unkillable Avowed (except by Dassem) and relatively numerous High Mages. Been constantly fighting for about 100 years.

Bridgeburners: uber-hard, elite, fearless (facing a city defended by demonic condors, K'Chain Kell Hunters AND vastly outnumbered? We attack! ^_^) And the most important factor: Fiddler + Hedge + a full stock of munitions = a fighting chance against anything.

The Seguleh - hard to match these guys in an equal contest. Mad dual-wielding sword skills. A large force of the top-ranked Seguleh, say the First through the Thousandth or something, would be virtually unstoppable against mundane ground forces of any kind I think. A dragon could roast them from safety and maybe the Moranth could just bomb the crap out of them from the sky but that's just...not sporting. Maybe the Crimson Guard have enough High Mages to whip up something nasty enough to reduce the Seguleh numbers drastically and quickly but I doubt the Seguleh would employ densely-packed formations so they'd be less vulnerable to massive magical attacks. Or perhaps the Bridgeburners might be able to make things a bit more even with munitions, but I think their only chance of actually defeating a Seguleh force of equal size would be if they had leadtime to prepare the ground with munitions.

I dismiss the First Sword out of hand (perhaps wrongly) because they are a pretty small highly specialized unit, fully occupied in watching Dassem's back while he did most of the killing. More like a bodyguard really. Plus, iirc, the Sword was hard pressed against regular Sevent Cities soldiery, and surely Dassem couldn't cut down an army of Seguleh all by himself...even Anomander Rake had to rest after two bells of constant duels with Seguleh.

so yeah, Seguleh it is. Even if we haven't seen or heard of them forming armies.

edited for clarity

Grey Swords because they will hold to their contract and continue against all odds, doing more than could ever fairly be expected...of course that could be said for most of them....

the bridgeburners, i mean come on, they'll drop munitions on just about anything.
The Jaghut Tyrant in GoTM, the way they mined the street corners, on that flat plain they'd have cooked up something that involved dumping a lot of cussers on alot of people of the opposite army.

Every company listed above is formidable

BUT

Nobody could match Mott Irregulars on their terrain (Mott forest) - not even with powerful sorceries or ridiculous ammounts of explosives.
Well, unless they burn the forest down:)
Their greatest strength is that nobody takes them serious.
Kif: Sir, remember your course correction?
Captain Zapp: No.
Kif: Well, it's proving somewhat more suicidal than we'd initially hoped.

I chose between Bridgeburners and Bonehunters - and voted for Bonehunters, because are tied to the Bridgeburners, and because I think the BOnehunters will kick some serious ass in the coming books. I also though the crimson guard, but who would win? It depends on circumstance, and I think the Bonehunters are better at fighting circumstance. Other than that the whole idea of pitching those against each other is ludicrous.

In think the Grey Helms are being severely under-rated. From what we've heard, they (the Perish, as they're mostly referred to as) are incredably tough - that's where the Edur faced their greatest losses on land and sea.

While i'm a huge fan of Temper and Dassem, I had to vote for the Crimson Guard mainly on the fact that they have a good mix of mages, and superlative individual fighters, as well as being an elite company as well.

Having read up to Bonehunters, the Grey Helms (Perish) intrigue me as well but I haven't heard or read enough about their abilities to put them over the Crimson Guard. Maybe Reapers would change my opinion.

I don't really consider the Seguelah to be a military company so to speak, so i have trouble putting them above the Guard. They are kick ass swordsmen, but i don't know their abilities beyond that.
The Mott Irregulars are intriguing as they've bloodied many an enemy, but again we haven't heard of their individual martial skill, and though they seem to counteract sorcery easily I don't fancy their chances away from the Woods.

The next curious one for me will be the Bonehunters as they have become a tough fighting group, and have a diverse range of skills. I would never discount them but as yet I wouldn't give them the vote.

Crimson Guard for me (as of Bonehunters)

Id say the Crimson uard, they are definately a potent force with the Avowed being epic fighters

not voting cant decide. avowed are cool but not to cool for a cusser up their asses. Someone has said the first sword is more like a bodyguard. good point well made. whiskeyjack would hold dassem long enough trotts to sneak up and take a nibble out of him.

Kalam I think he would hold his own against most of the medium level seguelah. and can the seguelah even hold a shield wall. I dont think any competent unit would break under attack from a single individual they would just steam roll them and gut them while they were under foot.

it comes between BBs and BHs the telling point is where is fiddler, quick ben, kalam and paran. are they BBs or do they move on to BHs. Even though they have left BBs every one sstill names them as hood damned Bridgeburners.

Bridgeburners for me just they were the emporers elite if anyone knew best that sneaky bastard did

Crimson Guard or First Sword aside (in a league of their own), I'm going with the old school Grey Swords (Fener Edition). What Itkovian did in Capustan is just too gnarly. And what about Gruntle and his homies. Can't Treach's Company get some recognition? All these companies are bad-ass. Seguleh don't count, though. Definitely a society, like the Spartan's in ancient Greece. That shit is a lifestyle.

From what we've seen in MoI the Grey Swords didn't have any offensive or defensive magical capabilities. They'd be mauled facing Quick Ben alone.
