????? Movie of one of the best fantasy novels I've ever read? And one that can actually work as a movie and not need much in the way of green screens or graphics? And that isn't 10000 pages long?

I would say I liked them about equally. LoAR is probably a better book in that the history aspect is more integrated with the plot; magic doesn't play a major role in the story (that I remember) and the politics side of things is more astute and realistic. That said I don't think there is a major qualitative difference. I'm pretty sure that if you enjoyed one you will enjoy the other.

Edit: Wait, what? Movies of Lions of Al-Rassan and Lies of Locke Lamora? That would be awesome if true. Anyone with any info?

It got optioned about a week after it came out, but they must really be keen if it's already got an even tentative date.
It's a perfect cinema blockbuster story though, really.


I'm also intrigued by Lions even though I've not yet read the book, because it's not a typical-setting fantasy. Might pave the way for other adventurous fantasy films too, if it does well, so here's hoping.

Keep in mind it's very normal for viable properties (books, comics, etc.) to be optioned and a tentative production schedule laid down with absolutely no bearing on reality, and then internut sites merely publish the speculative info.

Case in point, there's been a WATCHMEN movie due to be released roughly every two years since about 1988 or so. Farland's RUNELORDS for about 5 yrs now.

I'm skeptical about LoAR as a movie... the characters were what made that book (typical for GGKay), and i can't see that translating to screen in a way that carries the book well. Two of the best 'fight scenes' occur entirely or almost entirely 'off screen', so to speak/type, and i can't see the reality matching the imagination-value. Fantasy book to film seems to work better when the books is event driven with archetypical characters, ie: LotR, Narnia, as opposed to, say, Bridge to Terabithia.


Then again, what do i know, i swore they would never be able to do even a half-decent x-men flic (some would argue they didn't, but the tall dollars say different).

Abyss, Neuromancer WAS made into a movie! Well, most of it was. It was called the Matrix

XMen was pretty good, but lacking Gambit is lame.

I'm hoping that Transformers is good, at least they have a start with Peter Cullen(who they have not voiced in any trailers yet, which seems dumb to me)

And have you seen the latest Transformers trailer? It has a giant robot... rollerskating...

'Tis true, but with the case of Lies, not normally so quickly. It's clearly caught interest in Hollywood. Which is why I'm hopefull, albeit I doubt it'll be 2008.

Yeah I reckon its just Internerd speculation...I doubt LoAR will get made. Lies maaaaaaaybe, but I wouldn't get my hopes up that they could do it well.

'Steal' is one of those terms that gets thrown around alot in spec lit without really being qualified. Most of the ideas in Neuromancer, while original in the presentation, could be traced back to Dick, Ellison, and any number of other earlier authors - and that's not to say Gibson, the Wachaowskis or anyone ripped anyone else off, rather, that the same basic notions, ie: life as an electronic dream, appear.

As for LIES, y'know, it's not like it was the most complex of plots, basically a caper in a cool fantasy setting. It COULD translate, the visuals are do-able - certainly nothing more complex than what showed up in LotR - tho the thought of that plot being Hollywood-dumbed-down isn't encouraging.

The Lions of Al-Rassan is currently in pre-production with director Edward Zwick, who directed Glory, Legends of the Fall, Courage Under Fire, The Last Samurai and the recent DiCaprio movie Blood Diamond. Supposedly it will be his next film, shot this summer for release in late 2008 (although this is not 100% confirmed). The movie supposedly transposes the action from Al-Rassan to the real historical Spain. How this will work on screen is unclear. IMO, the book is probably the best thing Kay has written, just nosing ahead of the mighty Tigana.

The film rights to The Lies of Locke Lamora were sold long before the book was published. The ARCs of the book generated tons of interest in late 2005 and a copy found its way to a Hollywood studio, who optioned the book and generated a lot of excitement in the process. Currently the film is 'in development' and a script is being written but is not yet complete. The scriptwriters have been talking to Lynch about it and a couple of Lynch's requested changes have been made (a romance was removed from the script after Lynch convinced the scriptwriters of the importance of leaving Locke free to address the Sabetha situation in sequels). No director is attached. There is no way the movie will be out in 2008. That's an IMDB placeholder.

In case people hadn't heard, Red Eagle Entertainment have confirmed that a couple of scriptwriters are at work on a possible movie adaption of Jordan's The Eye of the World; a pilot script for Martin's A Game of Thrones should be finished before the end of the summer; and the Sam Raimi-produced TV adaption of Goodkind's Wizards' First Rule is starting to move ahead as well (my TV bleeds!).
