I liked reading about her as much as most others. :)

But there is some inconsistency here. In RG she's pictured as a Marine, and shows enough wits to deliver a few funny conversations. She's also described as 'lithe' (for example when Balm wants to see her jump up a horse from the back).

Yet in tBH, she started out as Heavy Infantry. She mentioned (in thought) that she wasn't as slim/lithe as she used to be because of having given birth to two children; this was when she started out on Apsalar's horse, before DN hit them.

Yes, I was under the impression that she was a large, bull-necked woman in TBH. Now she is apparently an object of lust just as much as the ex-red blade who's name escapes me right now. Who also, in tBH, wasn't an amazingly lust inducing woman.

Lithe? All the constant descriptions of Gilani as hot enough to explode people and you pick 'lithe'? Incidentally, the squads damaged in TBH were probably merged into each other thanks to Captain Sort or something. Still, all the dribbling over her was hilarious.
Hello, soldiers, look at your mage, now back to me, now back at your mage, now back to me. Sadly, he isn’t me, but if he stopped being an unascended mortal and switched to Sole Spice, he could smell like he’s me. Look down, back up, where are you? You’re in a warren with the High Mage your cadre mage could smell like. What’s in your hand, back at me. I have it, it’s an acorn with two gates to that realm you love. Look again, the acorn is now otataral. Anything is possible when your mage smells like Sole Spice and not a Bole brother. I’m on a quorl.

I didn't picture her as a bull necked woman in the Detoran class. In tBH, Gesler had a hard time not looking at her breasts after all, and there was mentioning of her eyes there as well. :D.

However, either Masan did some working out so she can do what Balm was expecting, and change into a Marine after being Heavy Infantry, or the male Bonehunters in her squad have been in the field without seeing a woman for too long (which I doubt, since they were at 2nd Maiden Fort).

Illuyankas, she was put into Urb's newly formed squad right there. She was also the one who got to be trapped by DN and survived.

And yes, it was :)

I got the impression from tBH that she was a different class of heavy, like able to stand her ground. But when she took on the lovely big fur balls (DN) she seemed to grapple and show surprising elegance and precision showing more marine like skills. Although DN! you've got to be strong to stand your ground with those bad boys.
So heavy/marine she was ace all the way.
And with the weight factor (I'm not too sure about this just something stuck in my mind) didn't someone (possibly Gilani) manage to gain weight even as they marched and ate little? And for the new lustful eyes, she's been on a ship for a while and so to pass time i guess you going to do some form of exercise/maybe she gets sea sick and didn't eat much?

Rolling off a horse and slashing at a part of DN, doesn't require elegance. It requires horse riding skills, which she had, and survival/fighting skills, which she had too.

Don't think big soldiers/people are slow in their moves/reflexes, especially when they have been trained.

Maybe she's still a little heavy... Steven Erikson makes fun of people who like thin women by saying, through his character Rucket, that they tend to want women thin in order to make them look like children. And afterwards, comically, we hear in Tana Yathvanar's inner monologue that he likes his women thin.

She did become more of an object of lust (and humour) in RG than she was in TB.

I had a similar confusion/surprise reaction, since she was supposed to be a heavy, but unlike the generally dim muscled other heavies we met, she's a skilled rider, kick-ass knife fighter, and apparently sex object of the masses.

That being said, no reason she couldn't have enlisted as a heavy and been strong enuf to hold a line, then found she was better at being a marine when the squads were merged and reassigned.

I imagined her to look like Beyonce. Personally I got tired of all the scenes, but the first few were okay.

I think SE holds off the descriptions so that he can later transform certain characters to look a certain way. Urb also became a super sexy stud muffin in this book.

Like Fid, I will always have a soft spot for Hellian though (:

It was implied that everyone was on ships for months so everyone prob startslooking good. However, when she was first introduced I coud have sworn she was still presented as attractive.

It was a bit over the top right. Still the Balm scenes were funny...

The first discription of Masan Gilani as an object of lust reminded me of the descriptions that we've gotten in previous books of Apsalar... lithe dancer's body, epicanthic folds around the eyes, totally hot. And Apsalar has to be somewhere with the Bonehunters because Telorast and Curdle are around to harass Banaschar. I think they are referring to Apsalar posing as Masan Gilani when they are talking about "Not-Not-Apsalar." I can picture a scene where Apsalar tells them to not refer to her as "Not-Apsalar" which they take to mean to call her "Not-Not-Apsalar"

I definitely see Apsalar as more of a "hot girl of today" along the lines of alyssa milano or something. Thin, athletic, muscular build and smokin hot, but described in a way that would appeal to a reader living in 2007 where the media helps to fuel the thin-is-hot image. The BB's (except fid) were mostly afraid of her.

Masan Gilani is a "hot girl of her day", akin to nudes painted by the famous classical painters from 200 years ago. Much fuller figures, but at the time the most desirable possible thing. Wide hips, full breats, baby-makin fat...good healthy breedin' genes in general. The BHs (being in a midieval setting) would find this much more attractive than Apsalar

ANd the description of putting her at the front of the cavalry column using her ass as a "beacon" gave me a good ole fashioned LOL when I read it.
