Ok, im just at the part where they met up in that tavern and now that fight is going on right after... and smiles is scaring the crap out of me. She is worse than I imagine apsalar was when Cot was using her body. Thoughts?

Well the girl is certainly fucked up. Possibly killed her father, was probably abused at random in her village/tribe, her sister was sacrificed, she kills people for sport
Also spoiler if you havent read untill the end:
Nice chick, I'd hit it...

I think she rocks! I think she's either going to play a big role with killing someone everyone loves or she's going to have the Kalam like role with being an assassin, and maybe takes out a few claw or any other assassin in future.
But i think the her and Koryk are great together and somethings going to come of that, but i'm not going to speculate as to whether in a sexual manor or not.

Yeah, except Kalam's capabilities came from Kimloc's song and/or being blessed by Paran (more likely the former). Besides, Smiles needs Koryk as a tank, else the enemies would rush her and rape her (very likely literally).

I will disagree with you here. Kalam was a great assasin before DG and MoI but we hadn't seen his capabilities yet except in 1 fight with the Tiste Andii assasin mages.
I mean he used to be the assasin of the Falah'd before he joined the Bridgeburners and of course it is said his skill matches that of Topper who is/was the leader of the claw. Laseen offered him the spot as leader of the claw without knowing a lot of what happend since DG.
Just my two cents

And to add to what Talamadas has said, even dancer didn't want to mess with Kalam because he wasn't sure he would win. That quote goes back to the Emperor's time, way before the bridgeburners ascended.

The Tano spirit song didn't bless Kalam, only promise ascension when the BB's die. That's my understanding.
And when did Paran bless Kalam?

I'm not sure why I'm speculating on this.
And I'm not sure what the point in Smiles, and indeed Koryk, is, though they're alright as minor characters. If they become another set of uber-killers I'll be unhappy.
I want Picker and Blend back.
And what they said, Kalam definitely had a reputation before DG. Nothing to do with a blessing or song.
I can't carry it for you, but I can carry you.

Paran blessed the Bridgeburners.
And I have no doubt that Kalam was an excellent assasain before becoming an ascendant. But read TBH again. Kalam's capabilities were not human, and that was acknowledged several times. He himself admitted that things get slower for him in fights, which makes him excel in speed. He killed hundreds of claws - many at a time - and didn't exhaust himself. That he was able to take out ten as big as him, after all he did earlier, was the final icing that showed us the already obvious fact that he has ascended.

When did Paran bless the BBs?
And not really, he's just extraordinary. The 'slowing down' thing seems to me to be a minor innate magic if anything, and it's what makes him so good (as well as skill), but he was tired by the end anyway. He's just a badass.
Also, he never killed hundreds, Apsalar did that. And she's not ascended either, as far as we know, though she's closer than Kalam is.

He blessed the dead ones entombed in MoI.

I thought Smiles and Apsalar were like twin sisters. Except Apsalar had all the powers of a god without having to work for it at all, all she did was strut around feeling sorry for herself. After being possessed by Cotillion she then turns around and steals his powers and he can't do anything about it for some reason.
Smiles doesn't seem to have any godlike powers and at least has martial skills although we never hear of her sparring or training and from the very start she was deadly with daggers. Which suggests that she is really alot like Apsalar in that she never trained or earned her skills but was just "gifted" them by some meddling god.
In any case, I don't trust her very much. But its Cuttle that seems to be a Jarak bird (a true traitor but he may have been taken back by a different god that may be temporarly allied with the Bonehunters)

Isn't there a league of difference between the two though? Smiles might be deadly, but she's humanly deadly. Apsalar is a Shadow Dancer. She takes on pretty much most of the Claw and leaves them cooling on the pavement.
I think the two are similar only in that they're women with knives. The actual style and level of fighting are simply leagues apart, imo.

Also, there's no indication that Smiles never practised. If anything, I'd say she's good with knives because she practised, after running away from her fucked up childhood.

Apsalar didn't steal Cotillion's powers. She was the one who was possessed against her will, remember? That was left with a messed-up mind and a new skill-set when he ditched her in the desert? Seems like you're criticising a character for things she wasn't responsible for.

There are tons of characters who demonstrate great skill for no apparent reason or explanation. No need to complicate things with divine gifts.

What? Cuttle seems like a bad team player, definitely, but what's all this "traitor" and "allied with gods" business? He's a sapper, they're some of the least godly people in the books.

Sappers are no team players. Those are the guys you send in to cripple the other teams top players when you are losing. OK they earn you a red card, but traitors... why else keep them?
