Actually, the next book wasn't that bad. And FotN wasn't that bad either, compared to other stuff he wrote before. But yeah, no where near what he did when he first started up.

This topic would probably be better placed in the "Other Fantasy" forum...
As a matter of fact, I think there is a long-running thread called "The Book I Burned Today..."

Yeah, that's pretty obvious, so let's just wait for a mod to move it...

To be brutally honest, I've never thought that Feist's kung-fu was ever that strong anyway. He does however hold the high privilege of having written one of the worst books I've ever read - and whilst my tolerance for bad films is much greater than that for bad books, I've still read my fair share of them in the past thity odd years.
If an opinion contrary to your own makes you angry, that is a sign that you are subconsciously aware of having no good reason for thinking as you do. If some one maintains that two and two are five, or that Iceland is on the equator, you feel pity rather than anger, unless you know so little of arithmetic or geography that his opinion shakes your own contrary conviction. … So whenever you find yourself getting angry about a difference of opinion, be on your guard; you will probably find, on examination, that your belief is going beyond what the evidence warrants. I don't bother with Feist's stuff anymore. His first series were solid (if simpleish) fantasy, but after that it's been downhill, imho.

Flight of the Nighthawks was just Prince of the Blood rehashed and with Pug in it. To be honest the whole Darkwar saga has been a huge dissapointment for me, his writings really gone downhill since the Serpentwar saga, and he last book of that wasnt even very good!!

Magician and the Empire trilogy are by far his best books. Unless you're a big Fiest fan you could quite easily read just those and be satisfied.
I can't carry it for you, but I can carry you.

I agree with Polish and Kazz.
Magician was one of the first books i read and i loved it. Since then and especially after the Serpentware Saga it all seems to be very samey.
Quite weak with not much happening. The past few books in the Dark War Saga could of been all encompassed within one and i think that in its self shows how he's maybe struggling a bit.
Magician is a classic for me if only because of how old it is and how much i enjoyed it at the time. Murder in Lamut was awful. I hope he ends the whole Midkeminia ( Spelling! ) theme and branches out to something else.
But going on how things are progressing were looking at another 5 books here. Annoying as i find it hard to stop reading a Saga once started.

"I think i was a bad person before. Before this time. I do not try to be good now but i am not bad. Perhaps if i try harder i may get a better hand dealt next time? But surely that makes it pointless? Perhaps i am good. Just good at being pointless. But that would make me bad. Bad at having a point. Ah…. I see now. I was nothing before, I am nothing now. I am bad purely because im pointless. "

Magician was by far the best one, Silverthorn and Darkness at Sethanon were good reads but not nearly as good. The Empire trilogy was also very good as it focused on the Tsurani side of the Riftwar and was set in a very different cultural background.
The Serpentwar series was ok,books one and three were good, two (Rise of a Merchant Prince)was mediocre at best(basically the first books plot over again with some dodgy mechant dealings thrown in) and the fourth was barely worth reading at all, it was just another 'Pug and Tomas save the day again!' novel. As for the other standalone books, some were awful(Murder in LaMut,Jimmy the Hand) some merely mediocre(Kings Buccaneer, Prince of the Blood' The Talon of a Silver Hawk novels were pretty awful really, the main character was so bad its not even funny.. ramble over.

I have a deep nostalgic love for the original Magician/Silverthron/Darkess set.
The Empire series was a decent read as a companion piece.
That said, and imnsho:
Prince of the Blood was passably ok;
King Buccaneer deserved to be used as birdcage liner - omg was this bad;
The Serpentwar series was two books longer than it needed to be and the last book was an irretreivable waste of dead trees and ink.
I stopped there.
- Abyss, still thinks 'Milamber' is a better name than 'Pug'.

I liked Magician, Silverthorn and A Darkness at Sethanon. Then I tried to read Prince of the Blood. After about 100 pages I gave up. Never touched a Feist book again.

Whatever you do, never -and I really do mean never - read Rise of a Merchant Prince. If somebody recommends that you do so; don't walk, run away from them as fast as your legs can carry you (Or obtain some sort of hypersonic transport, if you're able). I'd also advise that you be screaming at the top of you lungs as you do this.
To be on the safe side.

I only read the Magician series (I thought it was four books, rather than three...) and I really enjoyed the story but I found Feist's way of telling it to be rather dusty.

I gather in some places the first book was split into two- Magician: Apprentice and Magician: Master. But it's all one book.

So this. It was painful. the third book in the Serpentwar saga wasn't bad, and the first was okay, but this pile of dross in the middle made me want to burn it.
I should reread the saga though, because I was young enough when I read them to be extremely annoyed by the sex scenes. ¬_¬ Which while probably still needless wouldn't bother me now.

His last one just came out. And I bought it. Not as bad as some of the earlier ones, although I am confused as to who some people are.
for anyone thats read them all, a question:
Of course, now hes going to new and ... odd... places to do his adventering (Pug/Milly)

Right on. You have encompassed my encounter with Feist's books precisely.
