They chose to serve the Crippled God... iirc, the Bonecaster among them failed in war against the Forkrul Assail.
As for pretending to be gods to the Teblor, that was just for power. And to produce Karsa, or someone similar, to lead the Teblor and Siballe's freakish child army against the Genabackans. The CG thrives on war, after all;)

well, on the maimed aftereffects..
being the object of worship seems to give you some enhancements in SE's world... including(possibly) ascendency.. it's good to be the god

Yeah I knew that. I still haven't finished reading House of Chains and that question was really bugging me...

They were trashed, apprently by Calm. Typical Tlan Imass response was to stick them in a cave.
Unhappy with this, they influenced the local Teblor tribes, to find a tool who would be invested with their power and so draw their bodies and then essences out of the rock.
Unclear just at what point the CG became involved. It seems that he recruited them once they were already manipulating the Teblor and Karsa was already being groomed by the Unfound, but in theory it could have been much earlier.
- Abyss, rocky on the whole timing thing.
