@DM

Bantam seem to be planning on doing a re-release of all the books in a new format, like the RG one we see here, and the bonehunters paperback, all of a single figure...

Personally i'd plum for GotM: Rake, DhG: Coltaine or Icarium, MOI: Gruntle or Iktovian, HoC: Karsa, MT: Trull

Ok, thanks. If I had my way I would choose different scenes for the last two.

Perhaps:

HoC: Andarist kneeling before the onslaught of Edur magic, holding on beyond all reason before finally dying.

MT: The Ceda standing at the entrance to the Throne Room, his head cocked curiously as he brings the Warlock King to the brink of defeat.

or

King Diskanar being crowned in the Throne Room. I love that scene.

They're not quite "single characters against a dark background" but they're the scenes I like. I would rather see a character doing something than just posed against darkness.

GotM: Raest
DhG: Squint
MoI: Mok
HoC: Karsa, I suppose. When he's in the magical net cast by the marines in Genabackis.
MT: Ceda, either doing a reading, or fighting the Edur.

The last two are more likely to be what they choose, but I think the first three would be awesome:)

Relax you've got plenty of rep, you repwhore :)

I see your point Tiste but as long as SE keeps churning out the good stuff, I don't care if he gets the nobelprise in litterature. Unfortunantly I think SE is getting a fixed price for the 10 books, so increased popularity will only benifit the publishers pockets :)

About the covers I'm not really interested person specific scenes, big pictures like HoC, NoK and to some degree DG are cool though.

One idea I like is if the covers where made to resemble historical oilpaintings. Things painted by the 9th painter or the guy in MTs. Big scenes of war, ascension, defeat, slaughter, barialmounds, etc. Pictures that are grandious in nature and scope and not so focused on familiar characters. The paintings should be removed from the personal aspect.

is it expected that they'll take any notice of the overwhelming lack of support they've received on this change, or will they just ignore it all and continue with their plan of making SE look like a spinn off writer of the Forgoten Realms setting?

THAT'S the one!! I knew I had seen something similar before...

And to answer your question, I doubt it. As Apt says, they are only doing it to get themselves more money... They don't care what the rabid minority thinks if the ignorant majority buys the books because they look more like everything else...

OMG the cover REALLY sucks... And the whole idea of re-designing the series, is awful. Had the covers been designed like this I would've never had bought the books in the first place... Geez...
It's really sad, that they shoud not listen to us, the fans. We're the ones that they take the money from, we're supposed to say what we mean, aren't we?

I think the admins should make some kind of letter to the publishers complaining about the new cover, and every member who feels the same way should sign it. Not an internet petition, but a more credible communication. They must know this forum exists, since the author himself has interacted with the place.

note: my main objection is with the redesign of the series halfway through, not so much this particular picture of Rhulad (though I don't like that much either).

Okay, now i'm curious...
Someone show me a fantasy book cover in the history of the published word that...
a) accurately depicts a scene in the book;
:) receives glowing love from all corners of a given fandom;
c) was not revised in re-issue.

- Abyss, is not a test...

Um...just restricting myself to the Malazan books so far, none of those meet criteria (a) that well. HoC may well be the closest to an actual scene.

Beyond that, I don't really know what fans think of other covers...so couldn't really say.

I agree with Abyss.

What's more, I don' dislike or fault them for the change. From what I've seen I think it looks ok and I can definently understand the change. The covers so far, with the exception of HoC, havent struck me as particularly great.

I like the simplistic look of light and shade on the new BH and RG covers.

I would sign a petition complaining about the new cover. I would NOT have read Gardens of the Moon if I hadn't read the glowing review in the NY Times - the US edition of the cover is awful, and I laugh every time I read SE's remembrance of it as a sort of "bodice-ripper" thriller.

Maybe this is the beer talking, but i quite like the knew cover. I've pretty much liked all the covers so far. It looks quite like a stero-typical fantasy cover, but in an odd way makes the anything but stero-typical stuff inside a little bit more exciting.

I cannot believe it. Most of you sound like a bunch of old women! if you seriously have a problem with the cover then don't bitch about it on this thread. We're supposed to be discussing the cover art here, not complaining about it. I have yet to hear a valid, serious, complaint so far, the only problem you have with it is that it's new and different. I had no idea that you were all so conservative. I actually like the cover, it depicts Rhulad all alone, bowing under the wieght of his power. The celtic helmet thing at the top should go but apart from that it's not a bad painting, it's just new, and as far as i'm concerned it's about time.

Btw, my favourite covers are the GotM and DG UK covers. :)

(Im not talking about everyone here, just the ones who say that it's a bad cover without giving a reason)

End of Rant

(I've also seen on this thread people saying that he character in tBH cover is Aplsalar! *choke* that is one funny looking Apsalar! That cover depicts a black man surrounded by cloaked assasins, obviously it's Kalam and and some claws.)

End of Rant

You might want to double check the thread and what you just wrote. You mention yourself some very valid points people have complained about, not just that things are new.

On the BH cover you don't know what you are talking about. The Apsalar picture is the proposed cover for the US version where you see a thin shrouded figure dual wielding daggers.

I'm not against the change, I like the new look, but you're forcing your foot down your throat with that post.

Apasalr picture proposed cover for the US cover...whaaaaa?! The US covers are done by Todd and he so didn't draw anything close to that lol

I think CLIP confused the rant about the newer BH cover that is being released for the mass market paperback edition by bantam to the actual BH cover.
And once again I don't think anyone is actually complaining about the painting it self. I'm loving the painting...just...why change the layout and format is all I'm saying. The painting would go awesome with the old layout

I don't mind it not showing a scene in the book - that's not too important imo. But the publishers should listen to fans sometimes...
