Beru

This is a very small thing, but who on earth (WU) is Beru? Beru Fend is a curse word that even i have been using, but really has little more meaning than say cursing our earthly 'false' gods who i have an equally small understanding of.
People curse Hood all the time but we have a pretty good idea who he is. Anyway, any thoughts on this would be welcome.

He's god of stormy sea (Lord of Storms). He seems to be popular in Darujhistan.
And it's not really cursing his name but asking for protection.

I took it to be from "Beru Defend us", or something similar.

It occurs to me that Beru could be a 'modern' aspect of Mael, along the lines of Oponn being the modern version of the aspect of luck that the Errant previously was.
- Abyss, modern aspect of the Fonz.

Not really Abyss cuz there's also Nerruse..the Mistress of calm seas, or some such thing. I think Mael's still pretty much the absentee monarch. Now should he establish a House/Hold...wouldn't that be nice!

Tho curiously, when the Jade Chunks were falling and Paran thought to call on a god of the sea for whatever he intended, before he ended up chatting with Hood, he intended to call Mael - NOT Beru or Nerruse.
- Abyss, wonders if the MoD needs a better address book.

Maybe because the MoD is aware of Mael's 'recent' activity (beating up the CG), and therefore knows (or thinks he knows) what side Mael is on?

personally don't think of beru as lord of stormy seas, but more stormy weather. a thor like figure perhaps without mjollnir as its wu counterpart is already in caladan's hands

furthermore, he is one of the most frequently cited characters we haven't met. perhaps he will be one of the staple ascendents in ice's novels?

That would explain his frequent indirect mentions. Also shows good forsight to name drop for books that havent been written yet.

We don't have to meet every Ascendant people curse by. I don't think there's space in the books for us to get introduced to Nerruse, Gedderone and all the others in the Glossary, unless there is some kind of Ascendant get-together and we get to see it happen...maybe another Chaining?

Now that's a thought.
Big beard, a big hammer, known for his furious and earth-shattering rage. Maybe Caladan Brood's similarity to the Thor archetype is a clue that, sometime in the past, Brood (Beruuuuud) was a native of Darujhistan who achieved ascendancy, and was worshipped by the locals as a Storm God.

Brood is a lot older than Darujistan. A lot older.
Hello, soldiers, look at your mage, now back to me, now back at your mage, now back to me. Sadly, he isn’t me, but if he stopped being an unascended mortal and switched to Sole Spice, he could smell like he’s me. Look down, back up, where are you? You’re in a warren with the High Mage your cadre mage could smell like. What’s in your hand, back at me. I have it, it’s an acorn with two gates to that realm you love. Look again, the acorn is now otataral. Anything is possible when your mage smells like Sole Spice and not a Bole brother. I’m on a quorl.

Couldnt Beru just be a name that has nothing to do with gods or godlings what so ever? A safe word that will not bring about any unexpected attention.

Except it's the name of a god. Silly Trem.

I do think it's an ICE angle. We know they've got their shared parts and split up parts, and so far we know some of the lands, character sets (do we know species? I was assuming Forkrul Assail are ICEs explaining why we haven't seen much of them) assigned to each, but every god we've seen so far seems to play into Erikson's story. So that could explain it.
I can't carry it for you, but I can carry you.

I could easily see ICE dealing with this, as in Night of Knives, there is significant mention of powerful beings known as Stormriders, thought little is revealed about them. It is likely he will follow up on this angle.
But we've also had SE introduce the defenders on the Storm Wall so who knows.
It's such a commonly used phrase in the books that I'd be very surprised if we don't find out more specifics about BERU at some point.

There is one point in the book where Anaster Toc (Toc the younger) mentions a few things about a couple of the gods and their relations with mortals in an explanation to Redmask. For Beru specifically, he mentions the saying "Beru's mercy" saying "she has no mercy." I was actually looking for this quote when I stumbled upon this forum, so I thought I would throw it in.
