and Legends: The Enchanted, which is a book with all the oldies, Hansel and Gretel, Red Riding Hood, Goldielocks and so on. Only they've grown up and are living in a world where the shit has hit the fan, a humongous pile of turd and a big friggin fan!

That sounds similar to Fables. Is it our-world set, or a fairyland, and where does it aim in terms of the humour/serious balance?
I can't carry it for you, but I can carry you.

It's a great deal more serious than it is humourous

I do not read monthly floppies any more, but this pic Posted Image

...almost makes me want to make an exception.

(for those not in the know, that's Wolverine's clone/daughter X-23 giving the Fantastic Four's Thing a 'bring it on, tough guy'.... a situation so utterly ludicrous and perfect such that i cannot help but want to read it...)

More like irrelevancy. Neat idea, but i give it less than a year before they go back to Fantastic Four. Nothing in Big Two comics ever changes for long, including the death that triggered that change.

Okay, so I just won the first 4 TPBs (20 issues) of Terry Moore's Echo series off eBay, after being intrigued by the write-up on Tor.com. Anyone read these?
"Here is light. You will say that it is not a living entity, but you miss the point that it is more, not less. Without occupying space, it fills the universe. It nourishes everything, yet itself feeds upon destruction. We claim to control it, but does it not perhaps cultivate us as a source of food? May it not be that all wood grows so that it can be set ablaze, and that men and women are born to kindle fires?"

...and Marvel sinks to a new low.

Wow, Quesada should be fired for such dickish antics.

By the way, DC's FLASHPOINT is a thousand times better than FEAR ITSELF (which itself is a VERY poor copy of DC's previous event title BLACKEST NIGHT)

I thought Quesada was at least mildly classier than that.

I remain utterly unimpressed with DC's universe reboot concepts.

Yeah those are something I will have to RAFO....but FLASHPOINT has consistently been great so far.

I'm actually tempted by a few of the reboots. I don't buy floppies but I might get the first issues of a few to see what they're doing. Specifically Stormwatch (despite Apollo and The Midnighter's crap new costumes, I'm interested in how they fit what is essentially The Authority- no pre-Ellis characters here- into the DCU), Frankenstein coz it looks cool, Justice League, because Johns and Lee are a dream combo, and Justice League Dark because if DC can make full use of its magical side it's a major plus point over Marvel, and I can't wait to see a proper integration of John Constantine into the DCU, albeit a different version of the character than the one in his own comic: plus it's a cracking team in general. I'm also interested in how Azzarello does on Wonder Woman - she's a character with so much potential, but DC rarely fully utilises her as the true warrior among them from what I have read; hopefully Azzarello can do that.
I can't carry it for you, but I can carry you.

True, and it was about as classy then.

Say what one will about DC, they generally don't go around slagging the competition. Marvel does.

The thing that's bugging me about the reboot is it's lazy. Rather than invest the time and effort in making the existing comics better, they hit the reboot button, which mostly gives them carte blanche to recycle old ideas with slight variations... again.

Just wait for the next version of Electric Superman, Aquaman loosing a hand, Batman framed for murder... yawn and more yawn. I'm not the target for this - i buy collections based on authors and art, not because i follow characters - so DC doesn't care what i think, but i will be curious to see how many of the New 52 actually survive.

I'm going to go out on a limb and say:

the major characters / teams for definite ;)

Beyond that?

I seriously doubt this is going to bring in huge numbers of new readers, for the simple reason that the only people seemingly even AWARE of the fact that this reboot is happening are people who already read comics.

Realistically, beyond talking about it on certain 'niche' forums - do you see major advertising about it anywhere? Maybe a poster here and there - in comic shops.

If DC want to attract new readers, as well as rebooting and starting from scratch, they have to BLITZ their advertising - and it has to go out way beyond the current trend of advertising in outlets where they already sell - that's not going to attract new customers.

As to where to advertise? TV, radio, banner ads on the internet - basically, everywhere. They have to get new customers interested for this to succeed.

Otherwise this whole thing will just be (another) damp squib.
meh. Link was dead :(

This is a really good point. And in fact they kind of have been...but not well. There are ads at the end of GREEN LANTERN in the theatre for the New 52....but they are post credits..and the problem with that is that the only people wiling to wait for post credits stuff are normally comic fans anyways...so while they are trying, it's not really working.

It DOES however look like they are planning TV ads.

Sure, it's mildly neat to see them trying to revivie Firestorm or Swamp thing, but what's amusing to me is that at least a third of the New52 are concepts that have already failed, sometimes more than once...

Static Shock...? Really? What this, his third try at a series...
The Outsiders... yawn.
Frankenstein and the something something... no. Just plain no. Stop pandering to Morrison he isn't always that good!
I, Vampire. Okay seriously DC, this idea failed back in the 70s and the Twitards aren't reading comics so just stop it.
Catwoman... what's this, like the fourth attempt?
Suicide Squad... the lightning in the bottle has left the building DC, give it up.
Hawk and Dove. Really. Hawk and Dove. He's an agressive 'hawk' and she's a pacifistic 'dove'. THEY FIGHT CRIME!
Demon Knights... oh yes, because series starring Etrigan have such a great track record...

...and full points for trying to integrate the Wildstorm characters - no doubt enough people want to watch Grifter shoot things/Apollo & Midnighter making out to keep that alive for a bit - , but giving Voodoo her own book is fail writ large.

I think the problem with Suicide Squad is that if I read it I'm going to be comparing it to either Ellis' run on Thunderbolts or Simone's Secret Six, and I can't see it standing up to either of those.

I'm interested in Frankestein though, coz Jeff Lemire has a big rep after Sweet Tooth. I've not read that yet but the subject of it suggests he'll treat the character very differently to Morrison.

As for publicity, it kind of is getting noticed. I have friends who aren't comic fans but are geeks who know about it; the problem is that by far the most notable image of the campaign so far is Superman in jeans and a t-shirt and that's causing more discussion (most people don't like it) than anything about the series themselves, and likely won't lead to that many new books.

Looking at the Wildstorm books, I've noticed all the superhumans being transplanted are either artificial or Daemonite based (well, Grifter's not himself, but daemonites is clearly what he's fighting); no seedlings and no Kherubim. Given that daemonites were intrinsically tied up with Kherubim though, I do wonder if we won't see them arriving themselves later on if the series work out.
I can't carry it for you, but I can carry you.

...

The problem with Suicide Squad is that i'd be comparing it to the original Ostrander run, and nothing ever done with the concept has or will ever come close.

Same here, but I don't think what DC is going for here is what we want. It's to get new people.

Marvel uses shitty advertising for shock events to get people into the store for a single issue.

DC seems to be heding all their bets, on taking every character back to their most popular, to try and get in new readers, for the long term. I can respect what they are trying to do.

For the established comic reader, it kind of sucks. But I find it very cool to see them trying to make a company wide jumping on point, and pushing it, hard.
