The Saint of Killers standing at ground zero after being nuked, drawling "not enough gun", remains one of my favorite comic book scenes ever.

Ennis' explanation for why he doesn't like superheroes doesn't ring true. There's nothing wrong with not liking superheroes, mind, but 'their publishers don't have the balls to make them commit genocide'...no, that can't be it. Certainly not the whole explanation, anyway.

For that matter, how do you get from 'their publishers don't have balls' to 'so I'll make my own 70 issue series in which all the superheroes are kiddie-raping sacks of shit'?

X-force vol 3 - There's just something rather delicious about these normally kiddy friendly superhero's being set lose in a very dark story arc.

In NYX, her first appearance, X-23 was a self-mutilating child prostitute. I'm not sure that's child friendly :p

You have to wonder what goes through Quesada's mind; 'The kids sure like this X-23 girl in the cartoon. Let's bring her into Marvel U...and make her a hooker! It'll be great!'

I could be wrong but didn't the first NYX series (abortive tho it was) pre-date X-23's appearance in the cartoon?

Geez, between X-23 and Daken, Wolverine's kids are popping up all over the place. I'm expecting them to bring back adopted japanese assassin girl and the Savage Land kid any day now.

- Abyss, starts countdown to 'Wolverine Family' ongoing series...

Wiki say,

Quote

X-23 was created for the X-Men: Evolution animated television series, then brought into comics (Harley Quinn of DC Comics and Marvel's Firestar experienced similar migrations from television to comic books). X-23 first appears in episode #41 of the program (titled "X-23"). The character's first comic book appearance is in NYX #3 in 2004.

And the issue in which she first appeared was published a year after XM:E went off the air.

i yield before the wisdom of the internutz.

So yeah, that WAS a weird thing to do. Anyways, they moved her out of that NYX nonsense and into X-Force eventually, because comics characters are more interesting stabbing power-armoured mercenaries in the cojones than sitting around in back alleys renting their orifices for spare change.

Any time some bright eyed comics writer gets the idea to mix 'realism' with 'X-men', he should be forced to read the entire New Universe line until his eyes bleed, slapped unconscious with Stan Lee's zombiefied corpse penis and then woken up and required to write a limitted series consisting entirely of Magneto and Professor X playing badmington for six issues with a Wolverine and/or Barak Obama guest appearance.

- Abyss, subreal.

Amusingly, Yost and Kyle (who created the character in the cartoon, as I understand it), did two pretty good X-23 minis well before X-Force that made no mention of or allusion to the hooker thing. For that matter, their run on New X-Men with X-23 was the same, in that respect.

Actually, anyone who enjoys X-Force really should go pick up the X-23 minis (Innocence Lost and Target X). Good times, lots of stabbing.

On a vaguely related note, when the hell is Marvel going to get some censoring standards that make sense? Using NYX as an example, child prostitution and self-mutilation are fine, but you can't say 'bitch' or 'shit'? Really? Really? Fuck off Marvel. Either make it consistent or drop the censorship altogether. I vote for the latter.

Can't offend the moral majority parents who are dumb enuf to believe comics are just Archie at the Choc'lit Shop and Superman saving kittens, so long as the word 'fuck' never appears.

Also, in case anyone was wondering, Clark and Lois have separate beds, Scott and Emma are just good friends, and the Joker just sat around and held Babara Gordon's hand for a little while after he shot her thru the spine.

As ridiculous as Marvels new rating system is, does anyone remember the good ol' day os the comics code still being around? That was awful.

It's no different for movies or TV though. Look at all the crime shows, you can have a woman raped and brutally murdered, but the characters can't say "oh fuck" when they get shot.

It is different. In Ultimatum we get the Blob eating the Wasp's corpse on panel It's goretastic, innards and all. In innumerable DCU and 616 comics there's more bloody on panel dismemberment than you can shake a stick at. It's a level of violence, or more accurately gore, that would easily earn a film an R rating or a TV station a fine. It's a differences of degrees granted, but it's still a difference.

This should come as no surprise to anyone given both Marvel and DC are US-based companies and historically people in the US have been less bothered about depictions of violence than they are about depictions of human sexuality and profanity. So both companies are therefore only reflecting the mores of their parent nation.
If an opinion contrary to your own makes you angry, that is a sign that you are subconsciously aware of having no good reason for thinking as you do. If some one maintains that two and two are five, or that Iceland is on the equator, you feel pity rather than anger, unless you know so little of arithmetic or geography that his opinion shakes your own contrary conviction. … So whenever you find yourself getting angry about a difference of opinion, be on your guard; you will probably find, on examination, that your belief is going beyond what the evidence warrants. Well it's hardly a secret that any child witnessing the Wolverine saying 'fuck' as he stabs someone in the brainz will inevitably be masturbating into same-sex corpses within a fortnight. And of course if Black Canary ever called someone an 'asshole' teen pregnancy would skyrocket.

- Abyss, ...don't even get me started on the impact on homosexuality in the military if Duke said 'shit' as he gunned down Cobra troops...

This doesn't sound like a good thing to me. Is disney now going to begin emplementing their no swearing, no smoking, no sex restrictions in the Marvel universe as well?

Yes, but 2 and 3 were eye-bleedingly assdumb. But we've done this debate before.

The Disney purchase is a go, btw.

Just remember. DC is a subsiduary of Warner Bros, and they do fine.

They haven't announced any details, for all we know, they could just be buying them, and then letting MArvel run as it always has and just reap the profits. That is the most likely scenario, or with very little changes.

Or they could gut the comics line, add Daffy Duck to the avengers movie, and turn Punisher into a g rated comic. (awesome, but unlikely)

But it's DISNEY... they're evil incarnate!

On one hand they're playing the innocent providers of wholesome family entertainment and on the other they're driving a thousand Chinese sweatshops making all the merchandise bought by the western hemisphere out of toxic plastics and the tears of little children.

I know! Evil mouse.

The big concern I have is whether they will enforce their ridiculous copyright rules. No more sketches at cons, no more pictures at comic stores, no more free unlicensed likenesses.

But considered pixar and mirimax do just fine, we wait and see.

Also, the deal might not even go through in the end.

See Canadian Bell/Teachers Pension Fund for example.

If Disney have any sense they'll know to leave well enough alone (except to possibly make sure that Jeph Loeb isn't let anywhere near another comic book in my lifetime...) I would wonder about the Marvel movies now. How is the hookup with Disney going to affect those?

Anyway, on a slightly different tack... Planetary 27... I'm so stoked for this...
