So I read issue 2 of Lake of Fire. Really good stuff (great art and combat choreography) - reminiscent of another comic Dark Ages.

Unfortunately Rick Remender's work is very hit or miss for me but I've got 7 to Eternity in my bag, will check it out later.

I haven't checked out any Justice League titles in ages. Marvel's current ULTIMATES is hitting the over-the-top superheroics sweet spot.

OLD MAN LOGAN despite a neat start, was him just bouncing between worlds, but was a fun read even so. The Old Logan character gets some solid development to separate him from the usual Wolverine.

INHUMANS ATTILAN RISING was filler. Meh. Even Kamala Khan and a steampunk Ghost Rider couldn't make this more than ok. Semi-saved by solid art.

SECRET WARS 2099 was weak on story (Peter David can do so much better than this), but great on character concepts.. the Avengers and Defenders 2099 were fun.

MODOK ASSASSIN... is fucking hysterical and has no right being as funny and entertaining as it is.

PLANET HULK - Captain America the gladiator barbarian rides Devil Dinosaur, pausing to hit Hulks in the face with a big ass axe. What's not to like?

A-FORCE - Great cast wasted on weak story, thin characterization. So much meh. When Carol Danvers is fighting a giant shark and you're bored, something isn't working.

SPIDER-VERSE - i was hoping for more of the gleeful charm that the Spiderverse crossover had even in its most tenuous sidestories. Got that, but just barely at times. Wow, Norman Osborne is nuts... What a twist.

DEADPOOL'S SECRET WAR - writing Deadpool into the original Secret Wars LS. BRILLIANCE.

MASTER OF KUNG-FU - This is kind of fun. It has a neat 'classic' feel to it, nice art.

Read a few more of these. Then stopped. Most were crap. Truly, utterly, crap. Most of the Xmen ones were particularly atrocious. WEIRDWORLD was fun at least, and so pretty to look at.
The SECRET WAR series itself was ok, mostly better than ok, but at moments just didn't deliver on its potential.
I see the app has added a bunch of old school POWERMAN AND IRON FIST....nostalgia time!!!!

Been on a bit of a graphic novel kick lately. My sit down to read time doesn't usually happen until later in the evening and I find GN's more accessible than books, I actually feel like I'm making progress. Novels have been delegated to mostly audiobooks, where I actually make progress. Here's what I've read recently:

Picked up the Tramsformers/G.I. Joe Humble Bundle and read volume 1 of Transformers: More than Meets the Eye. I liked it but wasn't blown away. I hope that was just a set up and it gets better.

Read volume 1 of G.I. Joe: Real American Hero and thought it was pretty good.

Also, finished Wonder Woman: Blood volume 1 by Azzarello. I liked it and have heard good things about his run.

Read Batman: The Court of Owls volume 1 by Scott Snyder and I thought it was very good.

The Dark Knight Returns by Frank Miller and I did not care for it.

Those are some good reads, DKR is pretty ancient now, it was mindblowing when it first came out and some parts of it have aged better than others. I really enjoyed Azzarello's work on Wonder Woman, particularly Cliff Chang's artwork with is just stellar in Paper Girls - a good read if you enjoyed Stranger Things on Netflix.

As a fan of all things HELLBOY and or BPRD...if you like that stuff, you should check out the recent release (I think it's to be a 5 or 6 issue mini) called RISE OF THE BLACK FLAME by Mike Mignola and Chris Roberson. It's wonderful!

Signed up for Marvel Unlimited. My library has Hoopla, and I use that for DC and non-Marvel stuff. For Marvel, I was using Comixology sales, but I soon realized that MU is much more cost effective. I was ready to sign up for $10 a month and saw they have a $69/year option, which was a no-brainer. And they are currently running a Doctor Strange special making it $60/year. I decided to read Aaron's Ghost Rider run first. I'll post impressi9ons when I finish.

I finished Suicide Squad: Trial by Fire and enjoyed it. I also read Hickman's Secret Warriors run and thought it was great.

Marvel Unlimited is a great bargain because their back catalog is SO huge. I had it for about 3 or 4 months, read an metric tonne of Marvel stuff, and then cancelled my subscription. I'll go back to it in a few years and pound thorough a bunch more. Enjoy!

Thanks QT, I'm sure I will enjoy it once I'm able to log in again. I've been getting a sign in error since last night around 6:00. Contacted support and still waiting for a reply. I figured no problem, I'll just get something from the library on Hoopla. Nope! Couldn't search for some reason. Had to sign it out on my phone and then read it on the iPad. Frustrating night for comics!

Agreed Abyss, SW was very good. I am almost done with Hickman's FF run - been chipping away it it for a while now. I really like him, my only complaint is that he bounces around a lot and has a lot of characters and plot threads to keep track of.

Hickman's FF run is probably one of my very favourite runs/arcs in all of the comics I've ever read.

In fact I fail to see why they don't just adapt the arc into a trilogy of films.

Like the end of the first film writes itself, and it would be fucking triumphant on the big screen...

Film ends with Thing (and the Richards kids) and Johnny finding the portal Reed created open to the Negative Zone, they go through and realize when they are on the other side that it's infested with big bugs led by Anhillus... Johnny pushes the other three through before it locks on them. Johnny is locked on the other side, Ben and the kids try to get back through to save him as the approaching swarm of aliens gets closer. After being at odds with Reed for most of the movie, and being a bit of a delinquent hero...he turns to Ben and says "When you see Reed. You tell him this is where I made my stand." and he turns to the horde advancing on him. "FLAME ON!", and the iris to the portal closes. Cut to black. Credits.

And the best thing about that is that there is PLENTY more to that story to tell in the other two films.

The only thing they'd need to do is skip over the origin, and establish the kids out of the gate....but otherwise that whole arc is a PERFECT film trilogy.

I still recall hearing about Josh Trank saying he refused to open any Fantastic Four comics before he made his film...and thinking how much of a mistake that was. I wanted to shout "You literally have the very best FF arc to adapt right here if you'd get your pretentious head out of your ass and look at it!"

Sadly he was more intent on sinking his Hollywood career.

I regret reading Hickman's FF run over a long period of time. I should have been more focused. I think that's why i don't rate it as highly as others. Some day I'll do a reread.

Hickman's FF/F4 arc is one of the bestest runs I have ever read, and I have read A LOT of comics. Also credit to him that while I have never been more than passingly aware of the FF, usually where they intersected with the X or A books years ago, I had zero problem following he story. CThat said, the story works in part because Hickman is truly a genius working with the monthly 22 pages format, and he had years to work with. Boiling any of that down to even 2 1/2 hrs would be challenging.

Given that, if I recall correctly, I recommended QT read Hickman's FF in the first place, based on having read the first volume one time, I really should get around to reading the whole thing properly.
