If that's DC's play, they're about 14 years late

...and I to this day i still cannot believe how many idiots insisted that Marvel 2099 must become Marvel 3000 when it was a year old.

Admittedly it would be much better if DeMatteis and Giffen penned a modern-day Justice League International/Europe/Anything, and did exactly as good as the first time around. I liked the Green Lantern design though, and those two are pretty damn good on occasion, so let's see.
I don't have time to consider things I have to consider.

I like DeM and Griffin, but their work is weaker when they try for serious as opposed to comedy, and if this is a comedy book like their JLI, then DC is even dumber than I think they are.

LoSH is a source of frustration tho'. The property is something like 50 years old and has been re-intro'd multiple times to relatively mixed/little success since the '5 years later' era or possibly the DnA run. It's a classic comic property and its kind of sad that the best they can do is replace it with future-versions of the 'big 5'.

The cartoon wasn't bad tho'.

For those who have been holding off on reading SAGA for trades...t Volume 2 of the trades just came out today.

That means you can get two trades, 12 issues worth of Saga goodness...right...fucking...now.

Seriously, between Vaughn's STELLAR story, and Fiona Staples unparalleled (and gorgeous) pencils...this is the crack you need to be smoking.

It is 100% comic sci-fi fantasy purity.

Do it now!

In DC's defense, wasn't 2099 just Marvel copying the idea behind the "Legion Of Superheroes" anyways? Slapping new people into new versions of classic heroes and calling it new?

I mean I know Legion only really had Superman as connective tissue and the rest of the team were new heroes...but it's essentially the same deal. Future stories of heroes. I mean, It even took place in the 30th century.

It was invented in the 1950's, and 2099 didn't show up till 1992.

I'm on DC's side.

2099 in a nutshell:

Thanks, google.
Hello, soldiers, look at your mage, now back to me, now back at your mage, now back to me. Sadly, he isn’t me, but if he stopped being an unascended mortal and switched to Sole Spice, he could smell like he’s me. Look down, back up, where are you? You’re in a warren with the High Mage your cadre mage could smell like. What’s in your hand, back at me. I have it, it’s an acorn with two gates to that realm you love. Look again, the acorn is now otataral. Anything is possible when your mage smells like Sole Spice and not a Bole brother. I’m on a quorl.

I forgot how much of 1990's era art looked like Rob Leifield's typical "172 muscles in a pectoral unrealistic" style and every hero was as wide as a Mac truck.

LOL

2099 was a hundred year jump to a time with no heroes where totally new people took up the mantles for their own reasons. Punisher 2099 was always crap. So was Ravage 2099, btw. Both suffered heavily from all the silly 90s 'darker edgier comic conventions. That said, Spidey and Doom 2099 were brilliant up until the implosion began. Doom in particular was great work by Warren Ellis for 30 or so issues that showed Doom as the absolute bastard he should be while still making him a hero. Spidey was Peter David at his non-Hulk best. X-Men 2099 wasn't bad, and mostly suffered from too many unconnected competing storylines... cool characters but they never became any kind of 'team'. Ghost Rider 2099 was pure sf genius that took all kinds of crazy cyberpunk conventions and did great things with them, with gorgeous art too at least initially. We won't discuss Hulk, FF or 'X-Nation' 2099 because the line was already imploding when those were halfheartedly released just to burn off the paid-for product.

LoSH was a thousand year jump that started with a bunch of teens with silly names travelling back in time to sip sodas with 1950s Superboy. It evolved from there up to the end of the '5 years later' era around 2002, and while they worked in connections to original heroes occassionally, it was done rarely and fairly organically. Then there was the DnA era whose notable element was the Legion Lost storyline.

My point being LoSh and 2099 were very different concepts. Marvel never had a functioning 'futureverse' line before 2099. DC always had the Legion.

(Btw Marvel's ripoff of the LoSH was the Imperial Guard and they were pretty blatant about it. )

So if anything, DC cancelled LoSH to try and rip-off 2099.

Don't forget the fact that every superhero had to be decked with at least three million pouches.

Eh...Nah, I'm calling 2099 Marvel's attempt at LosH. Whatever the differences, the same's are apparent enough to call it a swipe-ish in my head.

Marvel is nothing if not consistent in ripping off DC... (easiest example: Blackest Night becomes Fear Itself)

*snort* Oh man, I forgot about the pouches! It's like Deadpool needed access to waterproof matches and mosquito repellant...

I love the way Cable has little dainty pouches the size of his fingers strapped to his leg. As a kid, I spent ages trying to imagine what could be in them.

Same! There are others like me on this forum that aren't Dial Haterz like Abyss!

Open Window Man speaking to Graffiti Boy was glorious and goofy all at the same time.
I survived the Permian and all I got was this t-shirt.

Don't forget at least five swords, none of which any character will ever use, an open mouth and really tiny feet.

And shoulder pads so big you can't turn your head.

I won't get into how he draws women.

Abyss... hates Dial?! What? Why?
It's so awesome.
And yeah, really. I'm hoping Boy Chimney somehow reappears, too, because he was just fantastic.

I'm sure most of you will have seen this before, but for those of you who haven't, the forty worst Rob Liefeld drawings.

And joy of joys, in the time since that article was published Rob Liefeld's continued to be successful enough to warrant a sequel.
I can't carry it for you, but I can carry you.

The 1990's were a very dark and strange time for comics.

You're not wrong.

But Liefeld did create Cable and Deadpool, so i give him a tiny bit of credit on the writer side of things.

...tho really it was later writers did most of the cool things with these characters. When Liefeld created them, Cable wasn't Nathan Summers, and Deadpool was just a homicidal version of Spider-Man.

On the art side, zero credit and i blame society.
