Though the theory seems a tad farfetched, I feel there must be something special about Crokus/Cutter. After all, he does seem to pick up the Assassin's trade remarkably quickly...

Sir Thursday
Don't look now, but I think there's something weird attached to the bottom of my posts.

I'd say when you're under the influence of Shadow, you can pick those traits up fairly quickly Sir Thursday.

Ought we not to have learned by now not to presume too much about characters just because they're endearing or interesting in some way? Think of some of the amazing ones we've seen just go in less than 'deserving' ways:

The Ceda
Heboric
T'Amber (in my view)
Apt
Dejim...

For all his intrigue, Cutter may well be already dead in RG.

Quite right. I was just speculating and the more times I re-read the malazan books the more wild my speculation.

There is alot going on around Crokus/Cutter. It makes me suspicious. He finds Oponns coin, meets Anomander Rake, meets Bridgeburners, meets Icarium, travels the false path of hands with him, meets hounds of shadow, his demonic companion becomes an Azath guardian or whatever, he meets Cotillion, survives a T'lan Imass attack, meets the Queen of Dreams, etc.

Also just reread MT and BH again yesturday and noticed more flimsy and circumstantial evidence for Crokus being Jag blood.

During the dream with the Queen of Dreams when it started he notes that the air is unbearably hot then his last dream thoughts are of Dunsparrow and Leoman being "frozen in place just like me." It makes me wonder if the Queen of Dreams used Crokus as a refrigerator to cool the area around her temple so the trapped bonehunters had time to dig down enough to survive the conflagration above. Something about her smile scalded his blood.

I still think the wierdest thing to explain away is how Scillara has chilled bones right after having sex with Cutter. Maybe its just that I have a high metabolizm or something but after sex for me, I could run around naked in the snow and ice for at least five minutes before I even started to feel chilled. So long as the snow is not too much above knee deep. Direct snow to sex organ contact would indeed be chilling. Maybe I'm just too enthusiastic about sex or something.

Spirits below! Easy there mate!!!!!

Physical exertion involves sweating and after a sweat, your body cools...quickly. Being in the cold would mean a rapid fall in body temperature, so Scillara felt chilled. She smoked too much weed and she was pregnant...all perfectly legitimate grounds for having a chill. No more. I'm sure you could melt the polar ice caps Onrack but not everyone is so.....well, 'gifted'.....and please don't comment Abyss!

Well, since Scillara just had a baby she should still have alot of body fat or at least more than the average skinny man like me. I just don't see a little sweat causing so much chill especially after exertion.

Its not that I'm one of those Polar Bear Club nuts that goes out in the winter and chops a huge hole in the ice to splash and frolic with friends until my lips turn blue. Its just that I love icefishing and must therefore occasionally do some iceswimming. Usually, I manage to scramble out before getting chilled at all. The trembling afterwards is due solely to the massive jolt of adrenaline that sends me flying out of the water faster than I went in.

The QoD temple wasn't cool because of anything to do with Cutter Onrack. In fact, it was still very hot in there, just like erywhere else. The cool air from underneath is what saved them. Actually, I must say that I can't see any link with the Jaghut. Even with Icarium we don't see any negating of the temperature in ways that you suggest with Cutter.

Icarium doesn't seem to use Omtose Phallic at all though he does seem to be aware of arcane things. That Jaghut from HoC, the brother to Phearless only used Omtose Phallic to chill his wine.

I just say once again, who in the world feels chilled to the bone after having sex? The exertion to produce sweat has generally caused such excess heat that it takes quite some time to cool down. You don't just go from being overheated and soaked in sweat to chilled to the bone in a few minutes.

What could be Cutters secrets then? Simply knowing about the impending return of a Tyrant (whether human or not) to Darujistan doesn't seem like much of a secret at all. Especially if the Tyrant is human and not Jaghut. Raest got slapped down pretty hard and fast, then eternally imprisoned by an Azath. I just can't see any worry in a mere human tyrant returning. If nothing else, the retired bridgeburners would simply twist his pimply little head off, after using him as the backstop for a drunken game of darts. I think they've had enough of petty, thronesitting tyrants like Laseem and her ilk.

Err.... never heard of thrills, spills and chills?? In fact, just a few months ago in Amsterdam, I found that right afterwards I was chilled to the bone... right, back on topic.

Cuttter didn't know about the Tyrant Onrack. Hood's page-boy TOLD him. He was surprised to know. Cutter's only secret is his origin and the nature of his association with Mammot, who was a High Priest of D'rek and member of the Torrud Cabal. As for the Tyrant....I interject Onrack: you must get up to some REEEEAALLY 'interesting' stuff, yes? I mean, ice-hole plunging, scorching intercourse...then to make Raest sound so flippantly dismissed!! 5 dragons Onrack! 5 dragons and one of them was Eleint and he would have killed them all WITHOUT his finnest. Even vastly diminished, he'd held on to an undetectable trap of Mammot's soul, would have ensnared Derudan.. If it hadn't been for 5 dragons, an Elder god (K'rul), Kruppe (who defies categorizing), the Imass First Sword, a powerful Imass Bonecaster (Pran chole), a wizard wielding 7 warrens, a Tennes witch, a Moranth incendiary AND an Azath, Raest would have levelled Darhujistan, or drawn Rake into the fray.

So I'd suggest you tell us the name of this ice-hole you dive into after lathering up every morning! It certainly seems to be better than viagra!

You should see a doctor. Even in Amsterdam you shouldn't feel chilled to the bone afterward. Just ask Dr. Ruth. I'm sure she would agree with me. Unless you told her it was a frozen corpse you had sex with then of course she would agree with you I'm sure.

I wasn't dismissing Raest flippantly, I was dismissing some pathetic pimple faced human tyrant of Daruijiblab flippantly. Although Raest never even made it to Rake who was expected to fight him in the first place, which was a big letdown for me.

Just think, Paran might bring some backup later in the series from the Azath for a short while. "Raest, this hemisphere is annoying me. Crush it or something so you can get back to your knitting or whatever you do, and I can continue flirting with Apsalar, mwahahah."
Hello, soldiers, look at your mage, now back to me, now back at your mage, now back to me. Sadly, he isn’t me, but if he stopped being an unascended mortal and switched to Sole Spice, he could smell like he’s me. Look down, back up, where are you? You’re in a warren with the High Mage your cadre mage could smell like. What’s in your hand, back at me. I have it, it’s an acorn with two gates to that realm you love. Look again, the acorn is now otataral. Anything is possible when your mage smells like Sole Spice and not a Bole brother. I’m on a quorl.

I think that's the true masterstroke of this series - making Ganoes Paran and Raest flatmates. It's a Malazan Odd Couple.

You have never had sex outside on a windy day, have you? Yes, you warm up because of the physical exertion. Then that dastardly wind pulls/pushes the heat away from your skin, causing you to feel cool.

Edit: Iarwin, its the Jaghut... Ganoes is to busy negotiating with Hood.
Monster Hunter World Iceborne: It's like hunting monsters, but on crack, but the monsters are also on crack.

Or does Hood work part-time as a cleaner, coming in Tuesday, Thursday and Saturdays to tidy up?

Anyway, I personally think that it's extremely unlikely that Cutter's part Jaghut. I'm sticking with my theory that he's just a normal ophan kid, the latest in a long line of those adopted by Mammot. Perhaps Mammot has a knack for picking those with strong potentials, or he is/was good at bringing them out. I do hope that Kruppe was a former "Mammot's Lad". Yes, that would work out nicely...

Dunno about the 'normal' bit but I'm with you there on the lack of Jaghut-ness!

And Onrack, that was NO CORPSE, let me tell you! Either that or it had one heck of a necromancer ...Selush would kill for that kinda skill.

So yes, it was great and I did sweat a lot but the blee'n flat was cold and as the sweat cooled, I got chilled pretty quickly. Maybe I should have dived into a tub of ice before 'the deed'?? Dr. Ruth or not, Cutter didn't omtose Scillara with his phallic, as you suggest...

Apsalar was hardly a boy and Crokus was very much in love with her...not to mention him (Cutter) later sleeping with Scillara, so not so gay. Actually, nothing further need be said..

Just an observation...interesting pun on the names: Cutter and Scillara. They both sound like blades. Wouldn't it be interesting is Apsalar somehow ended up being soul-shifted into Scillara, making her a deadly shadow-dancing assassin?

No, I think he meant making Scillara a deadly shadow-dancing assassin (DSDA).

But I don't see that happening. Mind you, anything could happen.
