Who's the tall bloke that Hellian gets the drink from? Old guard, but for some reason I don't think it was Nok.

The hip flask she's given has four symbols on it, as far as i recall they represented the four big ships in the empire or something, one respresented Crusts, Urkos, (third cant remember) and Noks, Hellion even says the last symbol is identical to the flag on Noks ship

It was Nok that gave Hellian the drink.

I think the four symbols she saw represented the Four Founding Admirals of the Empire

Nok
Cartheron Crust
Urko Crust

I think the fourth is Ameron, though not 100% sure. From Nok's history session with Tavore in HoC, we know that Nok & Ameron joined the Family together, coming from the same boat. So I would hazard that Ameron was also a naval type. No other candidates spring to mind.

Plus "Ameron" is just too similar to "marine" or "mariner", it just seems to fit for me.

Ha, I got shot down when I suggested that one a while ago. Seems like such a nice theory too, doesn't it?

it sure is :D Though i just said it for fun to spike the conversation. Anyways its easy to find out.

We had, kellyboy, dancer, duiker, toc elder, dassem, ameron, dujec, hawl(noks wife), nok, the crusts, surly

Nok is admiral
the crusts are admirals
dancer/kelly/duiker/dassem/dujec/surly are out of the story. that leaves
toc, ameron, hawl...
toc could not have been a founding admiral because he kinda nocked up crusts his sister :D on crusts ship... soooos.

Ameron, hawl. hawl is dead...
so ameron is the admiral...

My shot down theory was that ameron became the drill sergeant braven tooth.
Braven tooth is old, old guard and his behaviour is so god damn veteran is sickening.

Dunno Braven tooth is too much of a legend and Fiddler recognises Cartheron Crist on sight so hed recognise Ameron. I mean he may already know but faking death in malaz city and then going to your flat round the corner isnt very awe inspiring. There must have been searches.

Also was Talon Hawl (on drift avalii) Noks hawl as in old guard. I mean surely not the age seems different and would she give up her husband to be an assasin? I dunno but HOC is the only time a Hawl is mentioned shes mentioned then is found dead so maybe they are the same person

Also i kinda thought the tal guy who gave Hellian a drink was Cotillion. I dunni why he just seems to appear and do loads of stuff

It's pretty clear from Cotillion and Shadowthrones reaction that she is old guard, and the wife of Nok. It was Nok who gave Hellian the drink as has been posted already :D

so Hawl pretended to be killed to her husband Nok and then became a Talon for Dancer?

I think Hawl already was a Talon before she married Nok. And during Surly's coup she faked her death, like her brothers did.

Doesn't mean she couldn't have been an admiral as well, but I doubt that.

No, that's not correct. For one thing, Hawl is not known to be related to the Crust brothers, I think that would've been mentioned at some point. Was she even Napan?

It seems she was married to Nok before they joined the Family, though that's not certain, so she couldn't have been a Talon at the time.

And she "died" in the fighting as Kellanved's gang usurped Mock and took Malaz City. This was before the formation of the Empire. We're talking about 100 years before Laseen's coup.

I stand corrected.

Time for a reread, and to start working on getting my hands on NOK (the book).
