In the late ‘80s and early ‘90s the synthesizer landscape began to change. A new kind of keyboard began appearing; trading wood for plastic, familiar knob arrays for uniform clusters of buttons and glowing screens. They signaled more than a shift in how we interact with our musical counterparts‚ they ushered in the era of the digital synth.

[...] The possibilities with a few of these classics was more than we could bear and became the inspiration for Digital Synsations. We took 4 classic keyboards from the era and set our sound designers loose, tasking them to return with boundary-pushing sounds‚ and they did. Digital Synsations includes over 600 patches expertly programmed on fully restored hardware‚ used by many of the greats including Depeche Mode, The Cure, Pet Shop Boys, Vangelis, Brian Eno, Toto, 808 State, Jean Michel Jarre and more.

Music contains huge amounts of information — consider every beat, note, and vocal harmony in every second. When generating long sequences of sound, it's difficult for AI models to maintain musical continuity across phrases, verses, or extended passages. Since music often includes multiple voices and instruments at the same time, it's much harder to create than speech.

Built by Google DeepMind, the Lyria model excels at generating high-quality music with instrumentals and vocals, performing transformation and continuation tasks, and giving users more nuanced control of the output's style and performance.

[...]

Our researchers have been exploring with artists, songwriters, and producers in YouTube's Music AI Incubator how generative AI can best support the creative process, and working together to responsibly design a suite of music AI tools.

Imagine singing a melody to create a horn line, transforming chords from a MIDI keyboard into a realistic vocal choir, or adding an instrumental accompaniment to a vocal track.

With our music AI tools, users can create new music or instrumental sections from scratch, transform audio from one music style or instrument to another, and create instrumental and vocal accompaniments.

Maleventum Pompeii is a Kontakt library based on horns and percussions from Ancient Rome.

We have collaborated with producer and ancient instruments expert Francesco Landucci to record a vast array of horns and drums in an original Roman water tank environment, at the archeological site of Cecina Italy.

Most of the instruments have been captured with both close and room microphones, to provide the flexibility to blend/switch from a more intimate, breathy sound to a more evocative one.

Maleventum Pompeii features the following original instruments:

Horns : Roman Cornu, Lituus, Roman Tuba, Aulos, goat animal horns of various sizes and typologies.
Flutes , whistles and pan-flutes (syrinx)
Drums & Percussions: Timpana, Tintinnabula, Crotala, Sistrum
Weapons : swords, spears, metals, helmets

... though I already have a pretty big collection of ancient Greek instruments (virtual instruments, that is...): It requires the full version of Kontakt.

Some pieces of classic studio equipment just don't need an introduction: Here is the VPRE-72! The archetypal preamp was released in the early 1950s [...] A legend in itself to the present day, the V72 also became the blueprint for the later V76 and the classic REDD.47 preamps used on numerous Beatles sessions.1

THE REAL THING
Divine and subtle – this is why you hear the magic of this aerial tube pre on countless kicks, snares, vocals and basses all over the world. The VPRE-72 catches the exact spirit with a faithful emulation of the input and output transformers, the dual EF804s pentode circuit with its peculiar feedback structure, as well as the heavy output choke which produces a subtle touch of air.

AND THEN SOME
The VPRE-72 is as straight forward as it gets: Use the Drive control to apply as much tube circuit glory as your signal needs, or even push it a little further for some gentle and truly musical saturation. No matter how far you go, the gain [volume] is always compensated [that means it keeps the volume approximately constant so you don't get fooled into thinking it's better because it's louder], and the added V76-style low and high cut filters let you shape the results to your liking in no time at all.

That frog abomination is proof enough that AI was a mistake. Good grief. I've heard soulless music before but this takes the cake.

The drums do sound excessively quantized. (OTOH the vocals sound pretty soulful, and the guitar too to a lesser extent---with a nice weird warped quality to it.)

At the opposite extreme---I'm supposed to pick two free instruments for upgrading to Kontakt 7, and I love the off-grid midi drumming in this one (though I probably wouldn't use the included drum sounds, the midi can be edited and applied to other sounds---I'm thinking of maybe applying it to actual fire):

Also considering this one, by Garbage drummer and acclaimed producer (for Nirvana, etc.) Butch Vig:

... but the drumming seems pretty soulless. Perhaps they assumed modern producers would actually prefer it all rigidly quantized?

I might use AI to humanize it.

Also considering the 'Beyond Prog' drum midi pack put out by these two (recorded from their live performances, including double drumming) while it's still on sale (double drumming starts around 1:49 in):

... but their midi pack tends to be a lot busier than that (especially the kick drum iirc, which would conflict with my vocals), so I'd probably want to pare it down drastically.

And this midi pack (by 'one of the greatest drummers in the world'---the sales description says it so it must be true! because 'Nolly Getgood' is some famous person):

OTOH having the drums doing odd meters while the vocals and synths generally are not might be an excessive distraction. (Whereas in 'Dilla time' as implied by Karriem Riggins Drums having different swing for different elements is expected, and the loose fell leaves ample space for variation.)

Already have a vast library of unquantized drum midi recorded from live performances (Addictive Drums, Ugritone, Odd Grooves, etc.), including plenty of odd meters....

LA-based artist Joseph Holiday creates apocalyptic electronic visions (affectionately described as ‘Death Beats’) under the moniker SNAKES OF RUSSIA. His singular sound weaves together textured modular synth patches with gritty drum samples, all slammed through destructive chains of unobtanium outboard and tape to create a unique world of darkness.

In Tenebrae-LE, the light edition of our first Artist Series instrument, SNAKES OF RUSSIA opens a window to his personal Pandora’s Box, offering you a taste of the deep collection that has been curated from his distinctive sonic palette. We conceptualised Tenebrae, releasing soon, as an exhumed creature, buried for over a century and now resurfaced – bringing the dark dust from the depths of the earth. Transmuted through analog processing and tape; modular and analog synths, obscure bowed instruments and gritty percussion come together to bring the darkness in Tenebrae.

Synthesizer Expander Module is a free emulation of the classic Oberheim® self‑contained synthesizer module of the same name. Originally released in 1974, the keyboardless, mono module was intended as a companion to the one of the earliest digital sequencers, the Oberheim DS-2. Soon thereafter, Oberheim linked multiple Synthesizer Expander Modules to an early digitally scanned keyboard to create some of the first polyphonic synthesizers, used by legendary artists including Joe Zawinul, Toto's Steve Porcaro, Styx, and Jan Hammer.

Though it was a simple, barebones monosynth, the Synthesizer Expander Module possessed a unique tone quality, courtesy of its 12 dB/oct state-variable filter. With lowpass, bandpass, highpass, and notch modes, this flexible filter was the star of the show. We've precisely recreated it here with a filter section and Phasor effect programmed by award-winning synth designer Mark Barton (MRB).

Built in 1926 in New York, this piano has been kept in pristine condition. The ivories, hammers, strings and soundboard are all original. This piano lived through the great depression, World War II and the filming of the movie "Cats." It produces a resonant, growly tone that only age (and a bit of dust) can accomplish.

Wasn't sure if this should go here or anime, or ... anywhere really!

It's like 80's anime on steroids, time travelling space pirate metal band with the coolest fucking soundtrack EVARRRRRR!!!!

Starship Velociraptor!

And here's the entire concept album

including songs with titles like "Settle it with a swordfight". Absolute gold. :D

By a very talented guy named Jonathon Young. Who is "definitely not pretending to be a band".

Now I want to see the show, or play the game, or wear the shirt, or anything really.

Free (at least for now), for the free UVI player:

Users can configure the 2 main layers with any sound from three categories, including; 'Effects Box', sourced from handmade FX box instruments designed by Venus Theory and processed with pedals and granular processing chains, 'Analog', recorded from a selection of analog synths and pedal chains, and 'EMF', electro-magnetic field recordings, transformed and multi-sampled using various techniques and effect chains to create usable sonic instruments. Finally, a morphable sub-oscillator delivers a rich and powerful low-end.

Each of the layers in Noctua has its own microtonal sequencer, offering built-in randomization and probability, allowing everything from subtle modulation to complex voicing and progressions. Noctua also offers a custom designed selection of one-knob FX chains, providing performance-based transformation over the sounds energy and texture, configurable per-layer reverb and delay send effects, and powerful master bus processing including overdrive, compressor, eq, and maximizer to finalize your sound.

Noctua includes 100 presets, professionally designed by both Venus Theory and UVI, and provides everything needed to edit and rework existing patches to taste, or create your own from scratch.

Killer Mike arrested at Grammys moments after winning three awards

[...] handcuffed and escorted out of the ceremony

[...] Misdemeanor Battery [...]

[...] best rap album for his album Michael, and best rap song and best rap performance for his track Scientists and Engineers [...]

[...] "At 20 years old, I thought it was cool to be a drug dealer," [he] said. "At 40, I started to live with the regrets and the things I've done. At 45, I started to rap about it. At 48, I stand here as a man full of empathy and sympathy for the things I've done."

Killer Mike arrested at Grammys moments after winning three awards | Grammys | The Guardian

From Scientists and Engineers:

Quote

Look at the crook in me bitch
Look at me hit you with crooked D
Now I got you walkin' crookedly, they should be bookin' me
They should be bookin' me, know that they won't

#Science!&EngineeringEutopias

Of course he'll probably profit off it in the aggregate, though it does undercut his promotional image of having 'reformed'. But to be fair, Killer Mike also raps (on Scientists and Engineers):

Quote

I am a menace that's movin' on vengeance
I promise my opp that my anger is endless
It ain't enough that I took out my opp and his block
We burned down his whole fuckin' village
