Okay. Some more 90s nostalgia.
This isn't music but I remember my older brother was way into this trend that seemed to peak in the 90s. He had tapes and tapes of this stuff. And that stuff is the prank call collections that seemed to catch on in the 90s. You guys probably remember The Jerky Boys (who even had a movie during their popularity), but this may be new to you.

90? Here's some you guys were probably unaware of. Enjoy. Or not, because some of this will probably not be your cup of tea.
Wow... haven't thought of Neutral Milk Hotel and Belle and Sebastian in years. Guess I know what I'll be doing this afternoon.

Here's another "classic" Irish Indie rock tune from the mid 90's. Conflicted as to whether to link to the studio version, but decided instead to link to this live recording from the LATER WITH JOOLS HOLLAND show on the BBC. I chose the live version since it gives a bit more of an idea of what the lead singer was like when performing (though it would be better if there was a proper audience for him to feed off). Their gigs in the early 90's were a mixture of rage and quiet introspection.
WHIPPING BOY - WE DON"T NEED NOBODY ELSE (if the link doesn't work properly, skip to 5mins 25secs)
http://youtu.be/lKjTRB9zeqw?t=5m20s
But one of the main reasons I wanted to play that first song, was to play the second tune. This was a hidden track on the album, and it spells out it plain language the lead singer's battle with mental illness. It's an amazing track, spelling out his feelings about it, like a stream of consciousness. It takes a few seconds to start, but I think it's worth it.

I really like this song. Such a nostalgic feel to it. The video is brilliant too. I was convinced that it had to be old archive footage from the rave days, but it turns out it was all done recently. They really nailed the look. (edit-forgot how long it take for the song to actually start. it's after the 1 min mark)

Love a good catchy indie rock tune. I like how cheesy and silly the video is. Would love to see these guys live, but i doubt they'll be back to Ireland anytime soon.
Also bonus points for doing a satirical album about religion.

For something completely different, here's probably my favourite "traditional" irish folk tune. As someone who grew up beside the sea, and even worked on fishing boats for a while, this tune is about as perfect as it gets for capturing the feel of being by the water. So simple, a guitar and a tin whistle. The man who wrote it, Finbar Furey is apparently an amazing Uilleann Pipe player, and I would love to hear him perform this on the pipes as well to see the difference.

A lot of the programming on Viceland has music in it that I'm just discovering. Here is one that I like.

I'm a little shocked at that. I went to college in L.A. though so there's an absolute glut of concert venues big and small. I too am disinclined these days to go to anything wild though, so I understand what you mean. Do you have anything near you like the Hollywood Bowl (it's an amphitheater with stadium seating), cuz that would be ideal for you I think.

Out of curiosity I did a quick search of rock/alternative gigs coming up in louisiana, and I see that ARCADE FIRE and BAND OF HORSES are both playing next month. Band of Horses in Baton Rouge, and Arcade Fire in New Orleans. THE SHINS are playing New Orleans in November. Those are 3 gigs I'd love to see. But I also see that those distances are nothing to sneeze at.
It's a bit like that here in Ireland too. I'm in Cork, which is down on the southern end of Ireland, and so we don't really get the greatest selection of artists coming all the way down. Most go to Dublin and that's it. We do occasionally get some cool artists coming through like Calexico, or The National later this year, but they can kind of sneak up on you, and so it's easy to miss when the tickets go on sale.

So as we were driving up to the totality zone for the solar eclipse (see my post in the Want Science Thread in the Phoenix Inn) radio stations were playing music they thought were perfect for setting the mood. This was one of my favorites.
Maybe some of you Malaz grandpas are familiar with this?

Does anyone else remember this happening on MTV? It was epic 1993. I was 13 the same age my daughter now is and I genuinely fear for her generations shitty music coming out now.

I was 1 years old when they did the MTV Unplugged session, so no I don't remember it, but damn is it great, listened/watched it a bunch of times over the years. Their covers of David Bowie's Man Who Sold the World and Where Did you Sleep Last Night on that show are frickin' fantastic, actually my favourite songs they ever did along with You Know You're Right which was released posthumously.
Also I quite like Cat Stevens, couldn't be more different from the Heavy Metal I listen to the majority of the time, but I have a pretty eclectic taste in music all things considered, I like this song - cannot for the life of me remember the name of the film I heard it in, except it had Bill Murray in I'm pretty sure.
