Was it as good for you as it was for Abyss?

Still no book from that swedish publisher. Apt is not impressed at all.

I think we're heading into a "Abyss vs the Canadian Postal Service" situation with this one.

Funny, my brother thinks Dresden is better than Malazan as well. I do not agree, while the books are fun and have some great moments they are nowhere near as catching and filled with depth as mbotf imo.

Damn you and your black boxes!

I just finished Death Masks - great stuff, better paced and a bit less frantic than the others so far.
Butcher is definitely settling into his stride with this one.
So that's the story. And what was the real lesson? Don't leave things in the fridge.

- Abyss, thought Marcone was especially strong in that book.

Oh noes, Butcher ('s editor) has slipped up!

For me, anyway - I'm reading Proven Guilty. And I keep getting distracted by the way that, every other line, someone says something 'quietly.'

He says something quietly.
She says something quietly.
He says something quietly again.

Enough with the quietly! Why not softly, for a bit of variety? Poor editing is all, I sound really picky here but it's distracting me from the story. Now everytime someone says something quietly I can't help but scan down the page until I see it, sure enough, two lines later.

Gruntling over, Butcher is great and I just love these books.

In this one, classic Dresden kicking a door in and shouting

One day, someone must needs reread the entire series and make a list of all the film refs Butcher has dropped in.

I recall ALIENS, RAIDERS OF THE LOST ARC and the above off hand, but there are SO many.

- Abyss, notes for someone who can't be around electronics without frying them, Harry sure knows blockbusters...

Well, he's remarked that (as a kid was it?) he used to love going into the old cinemas and watching movies and he's obviously also read a hell of a lot of popular litterature and I'm sure this is where he's picked up a lot of his other references.

So who's going to pick up latest anthology collection, Strange Brew.
'And in Jim Butcher’s “Last Call,” wizard Harry Dresden takes on the darkest of dark powers—the ones who dare to mess with this favorite beer.'

According to Butcher's forum people, it takes place after Small Favor.

Library again. I've been hideously dissappointed with everything in the anthologies except the Butcher works.

Relatedly, MEAN STREETS just came in for me so i can finally read the Michael story.

Yeah, I'm with Abyss on this one. For me the library is where to go for anthologies. I can't see myself paying full book price for the other shlock that would be on display.

As for Butcher vs Erikson. If it's sheer talent, I'm saying a draw. Both can make me cover the whole range of emotions. But SE is far more intellectual, more challenging, and is far more willing to take risks with the books and his audience (at least as compared to Dresden). Dresden has superior sustained characters, I'll grant that. But that's what it is at its core. So it better. Dresden is a handful of characters thrown against impossible odds and we go along for the ride to see how his day from hell is going to pan out. But we know Harry isn't going to be killed. We can afford the attachment to the core characters. With SE, any character can die, horribly. And if you invest yourself in someone, you do it at your own risk.

It's like comparing a perfect pizza to a perfect steak. Generally speaking, I'll prefer the steak more, that's me. I like my meat. But dang if that pizza doesn't look good sometimes.

I quite liked the other stories in Mean Streets. I've spoken with Kat Richardson on Usenet before, and her Greywalker is a really interesting slant on the urban supernatural subgenre. Though it must be said, I've not read the novel of the same name.
It is perfectly monstrous the way people go about nowadays saying things against one, behind one's back, that are absolutely and entirely true.

Back on the Dresden crack, just finished Small Favour, which I read over the weekend. Best yet I think - it didn't go too far off the rails with too much going on, and tied up a lot of stuff from the previous books.
(Still slightly irritated at everyone speaking quietly, but it's a minor bug in such a great series.)
Spoiler

Anyone else see Dresdens Chicago/creatures like the ones in Hellboy? The gruffs, undertown etc totally remind me of Hellboy 2. In a good way.

Turncoat now on the way, thanks to Amazon and 'one click' ordering!

Just finished Dead Beat and the love for this series is building and growing each and everytime I pick up the books. I couldn't put Dead Beat down, and was waiting for Proven Guilty this morning. I haven't read this thread past the point of the discussion regarding Dead Beat as I want no spoilers or even hints!
