It's not clear this is Laseen's last year. That wasn't what that passage explicitly said. It only made reference to the last year of her rule, it did not say that that last year was the current one. If you see what I mean.

My dark horse candidate for Laseen's successor is...Kallor.

Greymane is going to succeed Laseen. Only thing that makes sense :p

No way Korbolo Dom is going to make Emperor. No way.

Unless there's a coup...Lasseen used her claw to take power, Korbolo Dom, as the self-styled Talon leader, might try the same thing.

Hope not though, seeing as he's a complete and utter tw@t.

I'd like to think maybe Quick Ben will use his smarts and get the job, or otherwise Paran.

It's also possible that the empire may just collapse after Lasseen (I know Grub is the future First Sword so it cant be soon, but as dolorous said, no specific year was mentioned- could be a hundred years off).

Well, depending on what Dujek wrote in his journal about Paran, I could see a military coux(how the F*** do you spell this?) happening, leaving Paran in charge... Wasn't there a couple new cards in the reading at the end of BH? One was something about a new card related to war I thought... I was thinking perhaps the Malazan empire is going to become one of those new cards....

I think I need to re-read Fid's game near the end of BH

I think Quick Ben would rather use his smarts to stay out of that position, and Paran is a tad busy being the Master of the Deck and all that...
Korbolo Dom seems much more likely. Unfortunately. I don't think SE put Korbolo Dom where he is for no reason.
I'd much rather have Kallor as emperor. That would be really interesting, and he would prevent rebellions rather effective I believe:
Seven Cities rebel again => Kallor gets cranky and incinerates the entire Seven cities continent, Genabackis, the Lether continent and drift avalii, killing everything. => the remaining malazans think twice before rebelling
:p

I just re-read (skimmed at least) Fid's game scene in TBH, there's only one new card so far as I can tell, which T'amber didn't make and that's Trull Sengar (Knight Of Shadow, a Tiste Edur with a spear- must be Trull).

The mention of the House of War just says that Togg and Fanderay are looking baleful- maybe something to do with the fate of the Grey Swords in Reapers Gale or later on perhaps?

And it's spelled coup- I always like to help with spelling. :p

My money is on Paran. If not him, then one of the old school people who used to run around with the emperor. Or, SE might completely surprise everyone. It's happened before.

Toc the Elder will magically reappear and take over after killing Rel and Dom. You heard it here first.

It's been said before, by somebody.

The only likely candidate would be Aragan... :p

I think it's going to get really confusing...
with the postion going back and forth...
and a general bloodbath....
and tavore coming out on top...
she does have the loyaty of her army...
and her brother is the master of the deck...
seems likely to me...

I wanna say its gonna be Paran. He seems like he would be good but lets face the fact that not many ascendents are gonna be happy with The Master of the Deck being the emperor of a rather large empire. But then again didnt someone say that there had been Masters of the Deck before but only in times when the deck was in trouble. So mabye he can resign it or something along those lines. Plus Laseens rule isnt going to end untill the peasant army on the Wickan Plains attacks the wickans there.

I think its going to be someone that will live long enough to and be good enough to have grub as the first sword.
