At least a book is something you can get from your pockets, without people thinking weird about it. And the apologetic 'I can only make them from those' fits too...

'?This will do,? Gothos said, drawing an object into view from a tear in his ragged shirt.
The two Elders stared at it for a time, then Mael grunted. ?Yes, I see, now. Rather curious choice, Gothos.?
?The only kind I make,? the Jaghut replied.'

He's talking about how a curious choice is the only kind of choice he makes, not that he makes all of his Finnests out of the same thing. And the EGs did think it was weird.

I do wonder what it means by "a tear in his ragged shirt" though. Just something stored between his shirt and his chest, or a tear between the inside and outside of the shirt?

It says 'into view', like it's hanging from his neck and can be seen through the hole in the shirt. *coughsoultrapcough*
Hello, soldiers, look at your mage, now back to me, now back at your mage, now back to me. Sadly, he isn’t me, but if he stopped being an unascended mortal and switched to Sole Spice, he could smell like he’s me. Look down, back up, where are you? You’re in a warren with the High Mage your cadre mage could smell like. What’s in your hand, back at me. I have it, it’s an acorn with two gates to that realm you love. Look again, the acorn is now otataral. Anything is possible when your mage smells like Sole Spice and not a Bole brother. I’m on a quorl.

Perhaps a body part? Could a Finnest be part of someone's body?
A dragon tattoo on his arm?

I'm thinking it's something we have not seen before.

I'm hoping that given this is only the prologue, we'll get an answer in the book. Mysteries from the prologue seem to generally be answered that way.

it is.. DUN DUN DUN! is actually a piece of Silchas's little toe. That was then given back to him after Scabby-Boys spirit was in it. That is how Silchas has stayed sane... ridiculing scabby for thousands of years.

On a side note, Anyone think Gothos has a shirt that says 'I Ruined Scabby'?

More likely to say, "I Pick Scabs".

It is true that a soul lingueres within ruhlads sword. Read MT page 34 :)

Cant find this quote; am i looking in the wrong place? on p34 of the bantam publication theres only:

"A spire of ice. Or a spear - I could not close with it - but it towered high above the snows, glittering, blinding with all the sun's light it had captured. Yet something dark waited within its heart"
(Hannan Mosag)

What have i missed? :) that only actually talks about the sword being something dark.

Another thing i'd like to just point out; not that its concrete or anything is this:

p452 MT: Rhulad talkiing to Withal.

'Who is he?'
'The god? A miserable little ****, Rhulad. Who has your soul in his hands.'
'Father Shadow has abandoned us.'
'Father Shadow is dead. Or as good as.'
'How do you know?'
'Because if he wasn't, he'd have never let the Crippled God steal you. You and your people. He'd have come marching ashore...' Withal fell silent.

Interesting comment, no? :(

Lols. Its the "poem?" at the beginning fo the story.

It reads along the lines of (im on school now)
Mosags vision
"There is a spear in the ice" (dunno why he calls it a spear)
"Within that spear is a soul that yearns to kill
And its wielder will know death again and again."

ah fair enough; thats page 12 to me tho ;P

The choice of words (spear contains soul) actually would seem to indicate that the soul and sword are the same thing, or something like that :(

Withal's comment could just be because they are near the water when they are talking *shrug*

Another thought that comes to mind is that with Karsa on the way to go face Rhulad, the stone sword he carries is possessed of two souls; and it seems Rhulads also be in a similar state of possession :) interesting symmetry :)

Good catch. I would like to repeat my theory that the Scabby Finnest was a piece of Silchas Ruin's broken swords, and is now part of Rhulad's weapon.

No explanation for what happened to it in the meantime at the moment, sadly.

I like the notion of Scabby being stuck in Rhulad's sword. There's such poetic irony in Fear going off to search for something that was right under his nose.

- Abyss, also wonders why Gothos wanted the soul.

heh, when i read it, i thought he meant a 'spear of ice' as in something like a big ice chunk dropped from the heavens, with the sword/soul inside it.'

maybe it was supposed to be a 'spar' of ice, and the editors missed it?
(I ... doubt its going to matter)
