I remember when I read GOTM there was a little of the history between rake and mappo/icarium - something like they were friends and had a fall out which caused a rift. Can anyone refresh my memory?
Just that I was reading GOTM and Mappo and Icarium were mentioned in passing and I was like 'who? -nm just keep reading.' They seem to be major characters in the series though.
TIA

It appears you have only read Gotm..
Mappo/Icarium do become fairly major characters or pviotal ones at least in later books. I dont really consider that a spoiler of sorts. There in the first few chapters of the next book anyway..
In regards to a relationship between Rake and mappo/Icarium
extremely small spoiler...

Thanks HUME but there was a tidbit near the end of GOTM mentioning rake and icarium - I THINK.
Couldnt be bothered flipping through pages to find it though so I thought Id ask to see what everyone else knew about this '.
smooth sailin'.

I know what you are talking about it is in reference to the Clock and the name of the year that the clock has turned to. Icarium made the clock and Rake says it might be a good idea to pay attention to it and not think it silly legend..

Here 'tis:
Yeah, I like quoting stuff.
Quote
Baruk climbed to his feet and strode to the window. Beyond the sky had begun to pale. "And so it begins," he whispered.
Rake joined him. "What begins?"
"The new year," the alchemist replied. "Past is the Five Tusks. The dawn you see marks the birth of the Year of the Moon's Tears."
Lord Anomander Rake stiffened.
Baruk noticed. "Indeed. An unusual coincidence, though I would put little weight upon it. The titles were devised over a millennium ago, by a visitor to these lands."
When Rake spoke his voice was a ravaged whisper. "Icarium's gifts. I recognize the style. Five Tusks, Moon's Tears - the Wheel is his, correct?"
Eyes wide, Baruk hissed his surprise between his teeth. A dozen questions struggled to be uttered first, but the Lord continued. "In the future, I'd suggest you heed Icarium's gifts - all of them. A thousand years is not so long a time, Alchemist. Not so long a time. Icarium last visited me eight hundred years ago, in the company of the Trell Mappo, and Osric - or Osserc, as the local worshippers call him." Rake smiled bitterly. "Osric and I argued, as I recall, and it was all Brood could do to keep us apart. It was an old argument ." He fell silent, lost in memories.

And how badly would we love to read THAT particular sequence... Rake, Osserc, Iccy, Mappo and Brood in one room...
- Abyss, the mind reels.

So I'm not going to spoiler in this first book thread, but I am curious if someone would care to comment on the quote "The Past is the Five Tusks."
Just to be extra careful for any newbies (no major spoilers but a spoiler-esq question):

For some reason it rings a bell so it may have been mentioned later.
But I wouldn't read too much in to it. It's just world building. Mentioning random places/events/symbols in company of relevant material to give the impression of depth to the world.

If I recall correctly, there's a reference in GotM to Fener having five tusks, the fifth being 'love' which i'm pretty sure is a sideways ref to the war boar's penis.
Not that there's anything wrong with that...
