It was revealed that the torture is something from either her or something else, possible the witch, in MoI though, since Cottillion doesn't do that. It's obviously an attempt to iron out a GotMism, but it's there.

Quote

It was probably Apsalar. Where else would the 300 Claw she killed be?

Twas only a hand though. Granted, it's not said anywhere speciffically when she started killing them and she didn't have to kill them all at the same time, but it was well before she was revealed as being in the area and active.

In DG she does that crotch-thrust thingy against the rapists in some 7C city - the one where Fiddler pretend to be a Gral escorting two newly-weds. Fid thinks something like "there's the girl I know", so it wasn't just something she did when she was possessed - allthough, that does not in itself mean it didn't come from the possession.

Candidates:

- Apsalar;
- Cotillion;
- other Claw faction.

I'm going with Apsalar. Cotillion was monitoring the situation with QB and Iccy, and the Black Glove was infiltrating the Claw, not moving overtly. Laseen put Pearl in charge and he wasn't Black Glove at all, but was commanding the hunt against Tavore.

- Abyss, Black Sock.

It must surely be Apsalar. Didn't Shadowthrone give the tally of dead Claws and attribute them to her? He mused, "Not even Dancer............"

An interesting aside to that - we knew Pearl was on her hit list. Iirc, he had left the fleet/army after Lostara's apparent death, so this was her first short at him.

What do peeps think:
*Was Apsalar helping Kalam/Tavore and came upon Pearl and took vengeance for Kalam, or
*was she hunting Pearl and just helped Kalam/Tavore as a side effort.

- Abyss, multi-tasker.

I thought she was hunting Pearl and helped out Kalam for her own reasons.

I thought Pearl was on the list given to her by Cotillion and ST.
Hello, soldiers, look at your mage, now back to me, now back at your mage, now back to me. Sadly, he isn’t me, but if he stopped being an unascended mortal and switched to Sole Spice, he could smell like he’s me. Look down, back up, where are you? You’re in a warren with the High Mage your cadre mage could smell like. What’s in your hand, back at me. I have it, it’s an acorn with two gates to that realm you love. Look again, the acorn is now otataral. Anything is possible when your mage smells like Sole Spice and not a Bole brother. I’m on a quorl.

Who would... :)

And as I read it, Pearl was the last (and most difficult) target on the list ST gave her. IIRC she's thinking about that somewhere about the time she joins the 14th.

Just a thought but did ne1 else think that her target was gonna be QB? Just the way she turned up in the desert and the tension that was there. But yeh she definitely was given Pearl and had to cut through the 20 hands that was in the way. Also she still wanted to die at this point so maybe she attacked them because of that

The tension between Apsalar and QB/Kalam goes way back to GotM when they knew something was up with her but weren't sure it was The Rope.

- Abyss, wonders whether Cotillion uses soap on a Rope...

Yes tiam - i totally thought the same thing. I kept waiting and waiting for her to spring on him at any moment. I also thought Kalam at one point, but that ended up not happening.

Of course, it's because aspy and kallam luvvv each others soooo much. Cutter was never man enough for her.

heh.

She got the list from Cotillion, didn't she? ST may be insane, but Cot isn't. There's no way they'd have her go after the best mage that they have on their side. Which he does seem to be, at least nominally. I'm still sort of waiting to see if ST really means to destroy the CG... I can see this being some elaborate set-up to weaken the CG to the point where ST can subjugate and use the CG for his own ends.

Also the fact that while Apsalar is hard an well powerful, we gather that in manipulating each other terms, QB is beating ST lots to one, so I don't think QB wouldn't have some sort of contingency. And ST would know that. And probably be a little more subtle.
Does the parralel between QB and Kalam and ST and Dancer strike anyone as significant?

@ Polish

Woah!
Good catch there in the parallels/similarity thing.

Big difference between the two though is that Kalam and Quick have no where near the amount of amibtion that Cottilion and Amannas have.

Yeh i think its significant. Not in terms of usurpation (is that a word) but that they are the improved version of the Emporer. A cunning sorcerer with massive power behind him and the strong arm assasin whos sort of the muscle or the enforcer of QB. Is QB more powerful than mortal Kellenved? NOK
Spoiler
so is QB stronger than mortal kellenved. Could kalam beat mortal Dancer? I doubt he used the rope preascension but i still dont think so.

Neway back on topic i agree with Philosopher ST will either obtain or neutralise the CG power

QB's nowhere near as powerful as Tays, it's pretty clear that. He's more powerful than he used to be because of all his souls, but the reason everyone's terrified of him is his smarts.
Kalam/Dancer - it's not a question anyone can or has answered definitively, but it's mentioned, I'm fairly sure more than once, that even Dancer would hesitate before going knife to knife with Kalam Mekhar.

Nah, I don't think ST is trying for the CGs power, though I agree he'll definitely get a hold of it if he can. Though I dunno if Cotillion would be cool with that. And I'm not sure he'd be willing to take on the other Ascendants in the straight ruck that would cause either, ST doesn't like battles of strength more than Quick does.
@HUME - Kalam probably doesn't, but we have no idea what Quick's scheming in that little brain of his. Though I'm not sure he's planning on taking over any warrens, BH showed us there's a lot about him we don't know...

I dunno bout that. Qb has the souls of 12 high mages and even tho Tay is the best adept the world has seen in a while he would be hard pressed to beat QB. Personally i think QB stronger but lets not turn this into a whod win. Also Dancer would hesitate then kill kalam IMO.

Im not saying that ST is trying to get the CG power but he is neutralising it. In forms of the throne of shadow and thje first throne i beleive that Monek Ochems last act was to either reinstate its power or completely wipe it out

There is no possibility of the Talon being involved?
