I would give my methods of pronouncing words except that I have no idea how to write them out other than how SE spells them.

For my third and final observation, we have to mentally travel to South Africa, where vowels get left out willy-nilly. Perhaps, if they don't need them, they could be shipped to Uzbhekistan, where they have virtually none... Ask someone from Cape Town to pronounce "dustbin" or "biscuits"... You'll hear the extraordinary way that the letter "i" isn't so much mispronounced as left out altogether. A similar collision of consonants is the key to pronouncing the names of our ancient friends the T'lan Imass or K'Chain Che'Malle.

That kind of pronunciation is specific to certain groups in Cape Town. I speak perfectly delicious english, thank you evry much. No if you'll excuse me I have to go and throw the left over biscits in the dusbn.

All I have to say is, thank the gods that I don't verbally discuss these books with anyone.

Hahahaha, me and Leoman discuss these books constantly, and it is always a battle of pronunciation, and generally it is around one of our parents who has no idea. I think we argued for a month over Toblakai.

I seem to have a conglomeration of English/American (lol), Japanese, French, German, and for some reason some Scandinavianness....
SO:

Tiste Andii = Tist (like tits with a "st") An (like the name Ann)-dee
Jaghut = Jag-oot
Fork'rul Assail = Fork (like the kind you eat with)-rule (like a king does) Ahs-ale (like the kind you drink)
T'lan Imass = Tuh (but a short sound)-lan Ih-mass
Eres'al = Eh-rehs-ahl
Toblakai = Toh-blah-kah-ee
Ganoes Paran = Gan (rhymes with can)-ose (like dose without the D) Pah-rahn
Tavore = Tuh-vohr
Meanas = Mee-an-ahs
Itkovian = It (like the word "it")-koh-vee-an
Brukhalian (sp?) = Broo-kah-lee-an
Kruppe = Kroop
Dryjhna = Drihdg-nah (like Bridge-nah)
Y'Ghatan = Yuh (but a short sound)-gah-tan (like a suntan)
Quon Tali = Kwahn Tah-lee
Mael = Mail or Male
Rhulad Sengar = Roo-lahd Sehn-gahr
Tehol = Tay-hahl (I hate pronouncing this one...)
Mhybe (sp?) = Mah (said quickly)-eeb
Adaephon = Ad-deh-fon
Tayschrenn = Tay-shrehn

Uhhh... can't think of anymore, but I know I've said some that no one else has put in yet. Enjoy. :>

(NOTE: Vowels with an "H" after them are pronounced as if you took the vowel and H out of the word and said it by itself - "Rahn" is like the exclamation "AH!" with an R and an N, "Mehn" is like in "Eh, it was ok" or the word "men.")

The one that always confused me was Tiste Andii.

I say Teest And-Eye, or Teest And-ee-eye.

I guess the same would go for the Letherii (I think it's spelled with two i's, is it not?).

What about Ammanas? Is that even how you spell it? Does it sound like "a man ass"???

I always think I pronounce things so much more differently than everyone else.

Tiste Andii - tihst an-dee-eye
Tiste Edur - tihst eh-der(only make a circle of your lips on der)
Tiste Liosan - tihst lee-oh-shun
Ammanas - ah-mahn-ahs
Letherii - leth-air-ee-eye
Ganoes Paran - gah-noes pah-ran
Kalam - kal(sounds like Al, the name)-ahm
Y'Ghatan - ee-guh-tahn
Fork'rul Assail - fork-rule a-sail
K'Chain Che'Malle - kuh-chain chuh-mall
T'lan Imass - tih-lan ihm-ass
Meanas - me-ah-nahs
Starvald Demelain - star-vahld dehm-eh-lain
Toblakai - toe-bluh-kie(like die)

That's all for now.

I've never been sure with Tiste Andii, as to whether or not it should be pronounced Roman (an-dee-eye) or not. And if not, then should it be an-dee or an-die.

Same with Letherii. *ee-eye or *ee, or *eye

Should Liosan be lee-oh-shun or lee-oh-san or lie-oh-san or li-oh-shun. Or substitute "sun" for "shun"? Who knows.

Kalam... is it Kay-lam or KAL-am... I prefer Kay-lam... it's less normal and cooler :D

Ammanas... Like I "Am an ass" :D

Long or short "U" in Fork'rul...?

Meanas... mean-as or Me-ahn-ahs.. I'd say the latter, lol.

Tiste Simeon told me how to pronounce it at the Manc Meet up last year, and I think he'd heard from SE (via an interview or Pallor or whatever) but I've managed to forget since then. I think it was Tis-tee And-ee-i, but I couldnt swear to it.

Regardless, I personally say Teest Andee.

I've always treated the double I in letherii or andii as a long E sound.
Lether-EE and An-DEE. I have been known to mispronounce these things though, and not even care. So don't take my word for.

Tayschrenn= Tay(like say)-skren

Kruppe= krewp (kinda like soup)
Mhybe= my(like eye)-with a light and fast 'short b' at the the end (like-->bh)
Darujhistan(sp?)= da-roo-jihs-tan (with the emphasis more on Daru)
T'lan= tell(faster)-ahn (like the word tell and kinda like on...actually just the warren, Tellan)
Brys= Briss

And that's really all that's in my mind right now...

With Ilgres and Tennes, I say it like Il-grez but softening the z, rather than elongating the e to "ee" not "eh". Could just because I'm a NZ'er though.
