Adjunct lorn got killed by a man(and quite easily i might add).
Apsalar gained her skills via a man.
Lady Envy isnt even human... and the daughter of a elder god.

Not to be overly nitpicky, but Lorn was killed by two women. AFTER she beat Murillio (a supposed 'adept' of dueling) and Coll easily, and she fought Blues while wounded after that.

Apsalar has perhaps surpassed the dude she got her powers from (and before anyone posts, no, that's not an invite to rerun the 'what did ST mean' thread yet again). And it was a woman, the wax witch in GotM, who permitted her to do so.

Point being, it's not as though SE's powerful women characters are just being killed by falling refrigerators at random.

- Abyss, waits to see if anyone knows the fridge ref'.

Will the name 'Kyle Raynor' do?
Hello, soldiers, look at your mage, now back to me, now back at your mage, now back to me. Sadly, he isn’t me, but if he stopped being an unascended mortal and switched to Sole Spice, he could smell like he’s me. Look down, back up, where are you? You’re in a warren with the High Mage your cadre mage could smell like. What’s in your hand, back at me. I have it, it’s an acorn with two gates to that realm you love. Look again, the acorn is now otataral. Anything is possible when your mage smells like Sole Spice and not a Bole brother. I’m on a quorl.

Even in today's army it is more of societal/cultural issue that keeps women from the front lines and direct combat units. Yes, I will agree that there is a real difference in muscle development and muscle strength in men and women. It's a fact you can't deny. But to say that women would not be able to be effective warriors is also definitely false.

My understanding is that the lack of muscle mass hurts most when hauling gear and marching, more than in actual combat. You could hypothesize that Malazan logistics are good enough, and their gear is light enough, for this to not be a serious limiting factor for their women.

Honestly, though, from the descriptions of women in the text, I've got to go with the hypothesis that women on Wu are bigger than women on Earth. There's no other way you'd get such a high proportion of the heavy infantry to be female (not to mention Detoran).

And when I was talking about upper tier female warriors, I was including ascendants and focusing on non-magical fighting. The ones Pippin mentioned might be good ones, but we haven't seen any of them in action. It's a definite disappointment that we haven't seen any female Imass warriors/Seguleh/Avowed either. Calm is definitely the most impressive one so far though, and I hope we see much more of her in the future.

The Seguleh have some cultural issues with women (won't fight them unless attacked), so perhaps Seguleh women specialize in something other than melee. Magic, maybe, or logistics. (Kidding.) The Imass that Lady Envy met on the Meckros city was female.

Curiously, Lorn, Tavore, Tamber and Laseen have been absent in the above discussion.

Lorn probably doesn't stick in the brain as a top-tier swordsman because she got so thoroughly wasted by Corporal Blues. Nobody remembers the loser...

come to the Reaper's Gale forum and be enlightened as regards Seguleh women :)

trying to match your audacious triple-post I submit that Blues is the premier finesse-swordsman of the Crimson Guard - don't ask me from whence this knowledge comes :D

I consider myself a fit, healthy dangerous man (:p) and yet I've met women who I know would kick my ass. I agree that the 'Adonis' type of man (tall, good genetics) would have a significant advantage over a similarly-endowed female but these ideals are uncommon at best. Skill and speed defeat brawn 9 times out of ten in my opinion so why should women be excluded from this equation? A female who chooses to be a soldier and trains appropriately has, to my mind, every bit the same potential of a man of a similar build. And as for your implied disbelief of females as heavy infantry- are there no big women where you live?

Hellian seems to get progressively more deadly the drunker she gets. I have a theory that if one got enough wine in her, she'd be a match for Karsa.

I kinda love it when D'rek unleashes her nerd wrath, as I knew she would here. Sorry innocent bystanders, but someone's gotta be the kindling.
