It was an old practice of the Rashan cult. Originally a discipline practiced by assassins, it later became simply another ritual for worshipping the empty throne of Rashan.
For those who have the talent, there is something about the dance that conjures the power of Shadow (in its Rashan form, though the distinction between Rashan and Meanas is minimal), specifically it appears to call shadow wraiths, which probably aided the assassins in their work, but later became only an indication of how well the dance was performed.

err sorry to contradict murrin but there is no indication of shadow dancing can call up shadow wraith to help with the assasination.

from the description given, and my own interpretation, its that shadow dancing invoke rashan in some manner or form that it enshrouds the dancer in shadow and thus making the dancer seems like a big blob with tentacles all over it. it serves the purpose of hiding the dancer outline as well as disrupting a victim preception of where is the dancer's arm

basically it seems to make it harder to stab teh dancer as you don;t exactly know the dancer position and it also masks the dancer attack as you don;t know which shadow tentacle that is waving around is hte real one with a sharp knive at the end of it

I'm fairly sure that when Cotillion talks about Lostara Yil's Shadow Dancing there are mentions of the shades that join in the dance. I wasn't talking about an actual wraith like those we see in MT, walking around helping kill people (those are a different kind of thing, spirits of the dead), I was talking more about the Rashan shades, the ones we see Bidithal using - as a mage he can control them directly, command them to do stuff, whereas the Shadow Dancers simply attract the shades' attention through the Dance.
