My thing for mages again: the warlocks and witches who ran to aid the fleeing victims of Y'Gathan and died in their sorcerous efforts (they burst into flames). Was that due to the Fire Elemental?

I was moved by Truth's sacrifice, and Gesler and Stormy's reaction to it. I was also very saddened when Apt died. I liked her, ugly demon thing that she was. What is Panek meant to ride now?

Minala: "Just because your other mother gave you a piggyback ride all the time, doesn't mean I have to! Get off me, kid!"
Panek sucks at walking, it seems.

Hello, soldiers, look at your mage, now back to me, now back at your mage, now back to me. Sadly, he isn’t me, but if he stopped being an unascended mortal and switched to Sole Spice, he could smell like he’s me. Look down, back up, where are you? You’re in a warren with the High Mage your cadre mage could smell like. What’s in your hand, back at me. I have it, it’s an acorn with two gates to that realm you love. Look again, the acorn is now otataral. Anything is possible when your mage smells like Sole Spice and not a Bole brother. I’m on a quorl.

I've seen way too many references to this living "fire elemental" creature over at Y'Ghatan. Come on guys. There wasn't actually a fire elemental, it was just Erikson's poetic way of describing the fire. So many authors describe a large fire as a raging beast that must feed and grow. And I think that the soldier who formed a theory about the fire being a living thing (I don't remember who) was referring to all fires in general. (And it's a stupid theory, and probably not true in the Malazan world, if you ask me.)

@Agraba:
re: elemental - Iirc, There were also multiple ref's to a 'godling' being born and to its life being short lived.
re: Lazeen - ditto. Argh.

Yeah I was pretty shocked when that officer gave Joyfull Union the heel. But I almost forgave her when she rescued the Bonehunters.

A tragedy indeed. I'll never forgive her for that! She may live since she rescued the Bonehunters, but if she ever tries again ...

I was so moved when Crump/Jamber Bole blew a hole in Y'ghatan.

@ Niko III: yeah, so was Y'Gatan and most of the 14th...physically. That Crump idiot should have been brained.

Mr. Bole helped a kid through the tunnels with Mott Iregular coping strategies. He's all right.

There is a passage in BH right before Fiddler plays, and he is talking about the injustices of Malaz City, and on a grander scale, the world. Steven Erikson has the phenomenal ability to place these heart wrenching passages in his books that, while they are meant to apply to the Malazan world, they can be paralleled and applied to our world as well. Erikson amazes me time and time again with this gift of writing, and his never-ending genius with the writing of this series. I don't know the entire passage, but it ends something like "Children starve, no matter how unopposed a lords rule." I mean, how true is that. Bush is running the US with an iron fist, and being the leader of the most powerful country in the world, he practically rules the world. Yet at the same time, "4000 hungry children leave us per hour from starvation, while billions are spent on bombs, creating death showers" (Thanks System of a Down). I dunno, maybe im coming off as a preacher now, but I just cant get over what a brilliant man Erikson is. *laughs* thanks for your time, friends.

I cried when the writing, story or characters sucked.
Yes, it was painful to cry throughout, while reading almost every single page.

when dujek died, despite parans efforts. and not only died, but died to something like the plague. the man survived so many other ordeals battling onwards, and then dies because of the plague, gah!
also kalam and t'amber protecting tavore as they fled out of mocks hold, particularly how ferociously t'amber fought, and the fact that tavore felt such intense sorrow. pretty much before that she was kinda a robot.
and when i thought greyfrog was dead, that was an unhappy moment

I think for me the most intense scenes, and the scenes that had me near tears most of the time were the ones where the few squads are stuck under Yghatan. As they're making their way through, ever onward, never looking back, terrified that they're going to die, sure that they're going to die, but moving forward anyway, and taking care of children all at the same time. It was intense to read about every one of the characters, and how each was dealing with it, and you could almost feel the strings of loyalty tying themselves around all of them. Sort of really hit home for me, for some reason..

Now that i think about it... Pella's death scene, the whole 'mom i skinned my knees' arrow in the head thing, was quite sad.
It's not that he was anything but a c-list character at best, but he had been around since DG and was a part of the Bonehunters even so.
- Abyss, figures that's gotta hurt.

I never cry.
But:
The slaughter of the company of shadow - they're just kids.
Apt dying so ... quickly.
Pearls' death, at the hands of LY, who only in the end realised he did what he did because he cared for her.
Cotillions' signs of a resurgent (or even newly-awakened) humanity.
Kind of made me pause. Among others mentioned previously.
Cheers,
La Sombra, will gut you all if you dare tell anyone about this moment of weakness

'Crying' is a relative term for me....on the very rare occasion that I start crying, objects usually start flying around! But what I meant is that if I were the crying sort, then this would probably set me off...and I have to say, Cotillion came blee'n closest!
While I detest scorpions just slightly less than I fear the damn things, I too wanted the squad to gut Faradan Sort for trampling Joyful Union. I couldn't believe it! And there she went again wanting to trample Y'Gatan!! One day that woman's going to really step 'into it'....that'll learn her. Truth be told, I've come to like her now though.
Hellian being tied up for wanting to kill Urb did make me cry though....I laughed so much that tears came to my eyes! The woman was unconscious yet she was mad, not about being hit, but because she was SURE that the spiders crawled ALL over her!
Reminded me of when I was little and had a kidney infection: my Mom had to give me injections. I'm scared witless of needles (must be related to the scorpion thing somehow)! Whenever I had to get a jab, I'd put up a real fight...so my Mom gave it to me in my sleep. When I woke up later ready to kick up a fuss about my evening's jab...she calmly told me that I'd already been jabbed in my sleep. Boy did I throw a tantrum when I heard!! My Grandma told me that but for the fact that I was ill, she'd strip the hide off me for being a spoilt brat.
