Imho, the old tentacle-lover is not that good - then rather Clark Ashton Smith.

The tentacles are perhaps the least-important aspect of the Lovecraftian prose. Take for instance "the dream-quest of unknown Kadath" or "the Case of Charles Dexter Ward" a classical onion-story.

The first one would not be bad, but if memory serves, the opening pages suffer from a deluge of adjectives (almost trademark-like, imho). The CDW-story is good, I agree.

Love lovecraft myself - If I were Abyss, this whould have featured in some form at the following signature, but i digress ;).. Lovecraft's novells always captivated me with their atmosphere mood. Gaiman I would say, is one of the few modern authros who manage to do something like what Lovecraft did in his stories. Smoke and Mirrors is an excellent book btb

Some of Stephen King's best work has been his Lovecraftian tribute short stories, IMO.
Hello, soldiers, look at your mage, now back to me, now back at your mage, now back to me. Sadly, he isn’t me, but if he stopped being an unascended mortal and switched to Sole Spice, he could smell like he’s me. Look down, back up, where are you? You’re in a warren with the High Mage your cadre mage could smell like. What’s in your hand, back at me. I have it, it’s an acorn with two gates to that realm you love. Look again, the acorn is now otataral. Anything is possible when your mage smells like Sole Spice and not a Bole brother. I’m on a quorl.

I like Robin McKinley's The Blue Sword and The Hero and the Crown.

I also love Guy Gavriel Kay.

And I like Jacqueline Cary.

I also liked Firethorn by Sarah Micklem. I just finished it and was surprised to have liked it, since I picked it up out of sheer boredom.

American Gods ftw!

You might find it slightly rambly in places but I'd reccomend it because it's so different from anything you'll have read before.

Non-fantasy - Iain Banks, Wasp Factory. Awesome book.

better than Erikson. Only Stephen Donaldson and that's up for debate. If so, it's by a whisker.

What you want in a book depends on what author you think is best.
For instance if you want a happy book that stumbles along for too long and no-one ever gets hurt then read Jordans WoT.
But if you want a book where you never know what is going to happen where people get axed without warning read aSoIaF by GRRM

In my opinion though i would say GRRM is the best. A Song of Ice and Fire is better than any other series, even beating (if only marginally) A Malazan Book of the Fallen.
(But SE is still better than anyone else, except Martin)

i used to be a huge fan of jordan and thought wheel of Time was the best series ever, but then i read gardens of the moon and i thought OMG! This is the one of the best books i've ever read...now, I'm reading Midnight tides, and can honestly say that this is the best series ever.

other good series:

Dark Tower - King
Earthsea - Le Guin
Skogland - Hansen
Horngudens Tale - Bull Hansen
Mists of avalon - Bradley

Other good writers:

Edgar allen poe
Bram Stoker
Clive barker
Things and stuffs...and other important objects.

I am now moving GG Kay to the top of my 'to read' list. Since I am a huge fan of McKinley and I think Cary did well with her Kushiel series, I am guessing we have somewhat similar tastes. :)
Thanks for the inadvertant suggestions.

First post :)

I haven't seen anyone mention Tim Powers. The Anubis Gates and Midnight Tides are two of my favourite books ever. Last Call is also extremely good.

China Mieville is the other author that I would class above Erikson.
