ok, towards the end, Toc (in Anaster's body) meets Tool. I'm under the impression that although Toc's shifted body, he still retains his memory.

However, it seems that Tool is now flesh and blood! How did that happen?

My understanding of the matter was, Silverfox, being super powerfull, turned him (Tool) into a mortal once more.
There may be more to it then that, but ...

its kinda complicated someone with more Brains or someone that has eatan more brains than me will give a better answer but..

As I can remember it, Since Tool was the last of his clan barring Kilava. Tool joined in with the ritual but I think the powers of the T'lan ritual with tool was put into his sword. And when he 'Gave' his sword to Silverfox which I suspect had more meaning than what you initially see, he released himself from the ritual. I think the fact that he is the First Sword of the Empire had something to with it as well.
So he is now mortal.

I'm pretty sure that he's not using his original sword. As we see in HoC, the T'lan Imass still make weapons, and I doubt they had the power to make invincible swords that could cut through iron while they were still alive.

um, I'm not sure about the ritual on the sword... that would make him an exception, and I'm under the impression that there's no exception for those who've undergone the ritual, unless we're talking about those who didn't attend the ritual like Kilava.

yeah, I doubt he's using the same one after so many years, Dark Mac.

If Silverfox could do that, then what prevents her from giving flesh to the Imass as a whole? the ritual shouldn't be a thing that can be reversed that easily no?

She could only originally release them from the Ritual, but after Itkovian released their memories into the Beast Warren, their souls had a place to go to instead of Hood's embrace - the Ay went there and became flesh, after Silverfox did her thing, and Tool did as well, but the remainder of the Imass chose to stay as dust until they could rescue their trapped comrades on Assail, as they're more powerful in that state. Silverfox is going with them so that after they succeed/fail, she can release their souls to the warren so they can also become flesh. Tool just left the warren to find Kilava and Toc. No idea on whether the sword had any other significence.
Hello, soldiers, look at your mage, now back to me, now back at your mage, now back to me. Sadly, he isn’t me, but if he stopped being an unascended mortal and switched to Sole Spice, he could smell like he’s me. Look down, back up, where are you? You’re in a warren with the High Mage your cadre mage could smell like. What’s in your hand, back at me. I have it, it’s an acorn with two gates to that realm you love. Look again, the acorn is now otataral. Anything is possible when your mage smells like Sole Spice and not a Bole brother. I’m on a quorl.

I htought Tool gave up his sword because he's "moved on" and that sword represented his status as "first sword" since he's been beaten in combat he can no longer claim that title, so he gave it up.

and yeah, It seems that when Itkovian gave the Imass their "souls" back, they can now go back to the flesh and blood bodies that they once had before the 1st ritual after Silverfox releases them.

Not so certain the remaining Imas except for those in Assail or where ever are now flesh and blood.

They wanted Silverfox to release them ending their lives is how I took it. Itkovian just took in all their pain and their spirits returned to the LAND which they wouldnt have done if it werent for his intake.

So afterward those present in Coral can now return to the DREAM world or Beast warrren in the FLESH. Pran Chloe is definitely in the Flesh when he talks to Silverfox, while all those who's pain was taken in by Itkovian remain in the petrified state.

I think that the only difference is theri spirits return to the land upon death, and maybe they can choose which state they appear as in the dreamworld.
