Sonny, my post there was to clear up a few gaps that a few of you had left in regards to facts. I fully understand your view.

I just want to clarify that Tolkien himself stated that The Lord of the Rings was supposed to be a fairy-tale. So it shouldn't be perceived as anything else. As for The Silmarillion - it's one of my all-time favourite books. I don't think that you could say that The Silmarillion is a fairy-tale. It might sound like one at times, but it is something much more and just because it has Biblical themes doesn't mean that it's not as good a book as Steven's books.

But you have to ask what Tolkien meant when he said "fairy tale." We think of fairy tales as silly stories that don't mean anything and shouldn't be taken seriously. That's not what they are, and that's not what Tolkien meant.

@Danyah - For me. But I imagine it frustrates everyone else too sometimes. :D

Sonnyboy, I agree with you. I do not think that he considered them silly and childish stories as most people nowadays think of them. And besides, there is a certain air of mythology found in The Lord of the Rings and The Silmarillion that makes the books worth reading.:)
