Well, maybe he's an ascendant by now, because he is the King in Chains. But he has no own free will. He's the CG's puppet.
Being an ascendant does not equal immortality. Maybe he's an ascendant because of the sword, but if one would chop his wrist and then kill him, he would die an ordinary, somewhat pathetic Edur.
This is like Prince Artas with Frostmourne in Warcraft III.
Problem is: can you shatter the sword afterwards? Any possessor of the sword will become the pawn of the CG. Imagine Karsa or Iccy holding the sword.
Shadowthrone is dissapearing (?)

time has passed since then and tBH, on the ship someone tells either Karsa or IC that Rhulad has fought many champions since taking the throne, and if the sword moved on its own would he ever be killed? alright maybe he's still got @ 5 dollars in coins on him, or it that 7.50 in Euros?
That would be 3 euros. Our coin is stronger.

I don't see Karsa having the sword a problem. Could be what SE is working towards. Karsa is already ignoring the CG, warren magic has little or no effect on him, he possibly has his own little warren! Be interesting to see what effect Edur magic has.
Iccy, however - hmmm.
