My favorite all time fantasy series has got to be the Thieves World/Sanctuary series edited by Robert Lynn Asprin and Lynn Abbey...edited because there isnt a single author. All the books are short stories contributed by all of the best fantasy authors from the early 80's. And I mean all of them, the first book Thieves World had stories by John Brunner, Lynn Abbey, Poul Anderson, Andrew Offut, Joe Haldeman, and Marion Zimmer Bradley. And there are 12 books in the original series with many other authors contributing...
All the books follow a common timeline and the only rules were that the contributing authors had to follow the time line and that they could use other authors characters in their stories..the only caveat being that they just couldnt kill off another authors characters...
Lynn Abbey has since returned with a 2nd series taking place years after the events in the original series. She began it with a novel and so far added 2 more edited books to the series.

I really liked the first few, up to about four or five. I got the whole series from a used book store that, sadly, went out of business (because the 'tards offered cash for books... As in, not store credit, but cash) a few years back. I don't know, I just didn't like the later books as much.
I was surprised, though, by how much I ended up liking Cherrehs (CJ? I probably butchered the last name) writing. I couldn't stand Fortress In The Eye of Time, but the short stories were pretty good.

I read the first series but it was soooo long ago. Great fun, especially the stories about Tempus. Makes me want to read them again...too bad I sold them a long time ago.
