ive nearly finished this book ,but with work ive only got to read it on and off so im a bit lost in a few places and need a few things answered.
1) why does paran want to save whiskey jack and his crew
2) why did whiskeyjacks crew help hairlock Move his soul into the puppet, when they just ended up wanting to kill him
3) why did hairlock want to cause paran great suffering, was it because he injured gear where he couldnt?
4) just after Adjunct lorn attacks coll and the lads, theres a part where we get a narration of her thoughts. how does she know of the girl who was taken over by a god??
im sure there are more questions but i cant remember them at present. thansk

gee....some time since i last read GotM...but i try to anwser your questions
1) Hmm I think he realized with his stay at Tatterseel's (dont know spelling, i know only the german version) that its bad when the old guard dies out. At last they had a certain fame and originally the adjunct didn't wanted to kill them all. So i think he came to the decision that they shouldn't be killed because the empire owed them or some such...besides his lover supported WJ & co
2) They wanted to use hairlock as a tool to spy on tays (or whoever wanted the BBs dead) but then hairlock ran amok / went crazy and QB had prepared something for this...they weren't able to control him anymore, so they (=QB) decided to dispose of him before he couldn't do harm.
3) I think that Paran prevented Hairlock from harming Tatterseel while she was ill and Hairlock wanted to harm her/to do something for her. Besides he was afraid of Paran...damaged his ego I think
4) She discovered that there were a lot of people butchered by Hounds of Shadow in Itko Pan but only one girl (and her father) survived, so it was reasonable that the shadowgods did something to them. She then simply followed the Girl (How many killing teenagers are there?) so she got to know where the girl landed. Besides she wasn't entirely sure which god possessed Sorry but she did know that she was a tool of the Gods of HHS.
Hope that helped you

1) Amongst other reasons, basically loyalty to the troops in his first 'real' command, and a bit of awe of Whiskeyjack, who he met in the prologue.
2) Initially Hairlock was an ally in hiding against Tayshren and Laseen, but he went just a wee bit insane.
3) Hairlock was insance and hated everybody, but if i recall correctly Paran protected Tattersail from him and kicked him away.
4) Lorn had discovered a young girl was not among the dead at the village near the Hounds' buffet at the start of the book.
- Abyss, thinks Hairlock would have been a great ventriloquist dummy...
"Hairlock, say 'hi' to our audience."
"DIE!!!!!" *unveils chaos into audience*
