I've always thought the four Magician books (Apprentice, Master, Silverthorne, Darkness at Sethanon), with the accompanying Empire books, were the prototypical fantasy trilogy. Characters grow and get more powerful, ending in the 'big finish'. Tomas' plotline is particularly great. The first series does improve as it goes, altho' later efforts were, imnsho, considerably weaker. 'The King's Bucaneer' was just horrible, and the whole Merchant Rage of a Demon Invasion Crown Breaking Prince thing was dissapointly weak, with the last book being utterly gratuitous.

Still, the original series and the Empire series are well worth the read - fantasy old school for fantasy fans, so to speak - and I'm looking fwd to the DBros version. New life-old-story sort of thing.

I disagree. I think Magician is by far the best thing Feist has written (they are still publishing it in two halves in the US? WTF?). Silverthorn was solidly entertaining and Darkness at Sethanon was okay, but a bit preposterous in the length of the fighting retreat that is undertaken throughout the middle of the book (it is of Chain of Dogs length, albeit without any civilian refugees). Prince of the Blood was good good and I thought The King's Buccaneer was very good as it was a connecting book bridging the first generation of heroes with the second lot and told a good story along the way.

The Serpentwar Saga had a great premise and some individually great scenes, especially that sequence in the city of Krondor in Rage of a Demon King where half of the old guard characters are killed. Rage also had a great naval battle, something generally missing from fantasy fiction. Rise of a Merchant Prince was also great as it showed exactly how economics work in the world, something most fantasy writers ignore. Martin is the only other writer I know who even broaches the issue. Shards of a Broken Crown was completely pointless, though, and Krondor: The Betrayal, The Assassins and Tear of the Gods were nearly unreadably bad. The Conclave series was better and it was good to see Feist reigning in the page counts, but the story was extremely mediocre and lacklustre in the way it was told.

By far the best recent thing Feist has written is Legends of the Riftwar: Honoured Enemy, about an elite group of Kingdom soldiers and a formation of Tsurani trapped in moredhel territory during the Riftwar and being forced to team up to escape back to the warzone. Cheesy premise, but the writing and characterisation was excellent. Of course, the fact that Feist didn't actually write it might have helped with that book (he provided the plot from what I can gather and William Forstchen actually wrote it).

Okay, so I just finished Magician:Apprentice. LOVED it. I like how it ended (splitting the books in a good spot). I gotta say I thought the ending with the assault and attempted seige of Crydee Castle was fantastic. You can draw parallels to the Japanese WWII style of kamikaze attack. Wave after wave of men meant to simply die as a diversion. Great stuff.

Fave character so far. .....Arutha. hands down. He broods perfectly but is also this valiant fighter/commander who is not afraid to get down and dirty with the enemy, you know?

Great book, and thankfully I stopped off at the bookstore on my way home from work tonight and picked up Magician: Master. Excited to see what happens next.

I'm happy to see all of the discussions on the Feist novels. The graphic medium will add a whole new dimension to the stories, and in just one panel so many things can be shown with lighting, coloring, expressions on the face of characters and little things that could take a simple moment in a story and make it so much more interesting ;) All, I can say is that the more fans that support us, the more projects will be able to put out for your enjoyments

Abyss, my friend, I told my brother to make a wallpaper of Fantus, I'll make sure that you get your own firedrake ;)

Quicktidal my friend, you're going to enjoy Magician Master :p

Very cool. Macross is pretty much as I envisioned him when I read Magician in ... 1986? Have you given him that "I have secret knowledge" smirk his dialogue conveys?

Like what you've done with the goblin. Maybe when you get to Macros' servant (Gathis?) you can adjust for the "noble-looking goblin".

Not sure about the troll - but then again I forget how they're described. They don't get many lines. :p

Sombra my friend, I'm very happy to hear that, and yes, in the adaptation we will give him that 'I have a secret knowledge' look :p

Definitely Macross's goblin servant will be very noble-looking :p

@T_K

Loving the look you guys have gone for with the Tsurani, especially the detail on the layered/resin swords. :D

Any idea on when it will be out in Australia, or is that too far away? Can I order online from you guys?

Sombra my friend, I'm happy you like the Tsurani, especially the swords, which we took a lot of time to come up with the perfect one that would look both alien and deadly at the same time :D

Magician Apprentice comes out today in comic book stores. If you don't find anything at all, we will be selling it on our webstore in about a week. Here is the link: http://dbprostore.co...talog/index.php

Thanks and talk to you soon :D

I can't recall some of the scenes on the 4B cover. Specifically:

Lower left, Pug with a spear, old guy shrinking from something with big claws?
Upper right, centaur guys? Maybe Saaur (sp?) but they are in a later series.
Lower right, one of those ant-guys from Kelewan (can't remember the name), but what is the orange creature next to it?

Still, nice work. Very dramatic. :)
