It's best to read the series in order, but you can skip books or read it in any order you choose. This is one of the defining traits of this mind-blowing saga!!!

I'd say you could read Midnight Tides out of sequence (setting and characters unrelated to the other volumes) but then you'd have to read the other 5 books before getting back to those settings and characters. So the order 1-6 is the way to go.
